Doing More For Feline Kidney Disease

Friday, May 8, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

We always try to go above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to our pets. We’ve been following the progress of our cat Atlantis who was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and kidney disease. After receiving medication to control his hyperthyroidism, his kidney returned to a high normal range. I realized that kidney function declines with age and Atlantis is already 15. I decided to add one more product to his daily regimen, Astro’s Oil.  So what is Astro’s Oil?

Here’s the official description of this product.

Astro’s CRF Oil is a unique formula created from pharmaceutical grade fish oil with a very high concentration of EPA  (eicosapentaenoic  acid) and DHA(docosahexaenoic acid) which has been deodorized and micro filtered to remove any heavy metals, vitamin E, which also helps keep the fish oil from oxidizing, and a highly bio-available  liquid form of ubiquinone (a higher percentage can be utilized by the body), in concentrations and ratios that are optimal for the treatment of chronic renal failure. This product is totally natural and has no side effects. Administered according to instructions, Astro’s CRF Oil will begin to have noticeable effects within the first 2-4 weeks in most CRF pets. It is also a great supplement for healthy pets as it helps protect against many inflammatory diseases. It will give your pet a beautiful coat and will actually stop shedding and skin irritations. It is also recommended for the healthy and precocious mental development  (and according to some studies) trainability of puppies and kittens. Kittens in particular will benefit as studies have determined that kittens are in a  constant state of DHA deficit.
So  does it work? The answer is yes it does and in a big way. I first used this product on my cat Molly who had advanced Kidney disease. About two weeks after giving it to her, I noticed that she became more active and more attentive. Her vomiting began to decline and she even started to gain some weight. I was so thrilled since even though Molly was on various kinds of medications prescribed by the Vet, I had not seen this kind of improvement since her diagnosis.  So how is it working for Atlantis? We will continue on this journey. Stay tuned for more.

Keeping Your Kitty’s Litter Clean

Thursday, May 7, 2020

In order to thoroughly clean your cats litter box, here are some steps that you should take.

  1. Dumb all of the used litter into a garbage bag and toss it out immediately.
  2. When cleaning the box, use very hot  soapy water . Do not use harsh chemicals. I use dish washing liquid.  Scrub the box with old rags that you keep just for this purpose.
  3. After scrubbing , rinse the box very well with hot water to remove all traces of  soap.
  4. Fill the box with hot water and add a cup of bleach. (I don’t do this but make sure that box is washed with soap and water very well).
  5. Rinse the box again very well with hot water to remove the bleach.
  6. You can either air dry the box, or wipe it with a clean rag.
  7. Fill the box with clean litter. You may want to line to box with kitty liners, or a plastic bag. This will make clean up next time easier.
Change the box a least one a week and scoop every day. Your cat does not like a dirty box and neither will you. If you buy flushable litter and scoop all the time, you can do a thorough cleaning every two weeks or so.

We’ve been following our cat Atlantis and his health problems including the beginning stages of Kidney disease. Kidney disease is fairly common in older cats and is usually not curable. Our former cat Molly had more advanced kidney disease and a renal diet was recommended. Renal diets contain lower amounts of phosphorus and protein. Most cats don’t like it and Molly refused to eat it. Cats need protein and in my opinion a cat with kidney disease that is on a renal diet and is given subcutaneous hydration may live longer but the quality of their life won’t improve that much. So I asked the question is it worth it? I needed something else and after spending hours on the internet researching kidney disease, I came across Astro’s oil and the story of how a doctor developed a promising new formula for his failing cat Astro who had advanced kidney disease. Here’s an except from the doctor’s testimony.

I had discovered some very promising research on feline and canine CRF, cellular metabolism and free radical neutralization. The challenge was to combine the results of this diverse research into a formula designed to arrest, and hopefully reverse the progression of his CRF. The formula would be prepared as soon as all the ingredients could procured, however, we first needed to buy some time. For Astro that meant hydration and nutrition.

Sometimes we need to go beyond the norm to seek answers that will improve our pets health. The traditional treatments given here in the United States for feline renal failure just were not good enough for me. So did Astro’s Oil work?

More to come!

Coronavirus Creates Spoiled Pets

We’ve been sheltering in place for about 7 weeks now. That means our feline family Atlantis and Millie have had the pleasure of us being here for them all the time. During this time, they have been able to calculate our every move. My partner and I are both overprotective parents who love to spoil our little balls of fur.  We are now at their command.

Millie knows the time I get up in the morning so if I’m a few minutes late, she will sit by our bedroom door and meow telling me that I’m late and must get up and feed her.  I always find Atlantis sitting by the cabinet that contains his food every morning. As soon as I walk in, I get a big ” good morning, feed me meow!

Millie knows the approximate time that I take a shower since  I now take one at about the same time every day. She loves to be brushed when I get out of the shower. If I don’t go into the shower at the time she expects,  she comes to get me and runs down the hall to the bathroom signalling that I’m late for my shower.

We’ve spoiled both Millie and Atlantis with treats but now that we’ve been home, they demand them!  Last night while I was making dinner, I had both Atlantis and Millie at my feet meowing and meowing loud telling me that it was time for their treats. They didn’t stop until I gave in. It doesn’t stop there, during the night they meow for more treats periodically throughout the evening and we always give in spoiling them even more.  They are two spoiled but very loved felines!

When Seniors Lose Pets

Sunday, May 3, 2020

When seniors have pets, they often share a very powerful emotional bond. That’s why a senior may need a lot of emotional support after a beloved pet dies. You can help by encouraging them to talk about their pet and what it meant to them. Give them time to grieve openly. You may also wonder if it’s a good time to replace the pet. Jane Shaw, director of the Argos Institute at Colorado State University says that some people want a new pet fairly quickly to re-establish an important routine.  Others may need time to adjust. So ask your friend or relative what they would prefer. If he or she needs more support than you or other friends can offer, suggest a grief counselor or a pet lose support hotline. It’s very difficult for anyone when a beloved pet dies. It’s even difficult to look at their belongings like their dog or cat bed, their dishes, leashes etc. When my rabbit passed away, it took me five months to get rid of her cage. Grieving is an important step in the healing process and make sure that you allow time to grieve.

Bees, Bugs and Your Dog

Saturday, May 2, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

Dogs are constantly sniffing the ground.  Sometimes they’ll stir up some angry bees. It’s not unusual for your dog to get stung on his face. Many dogs will also swat or dig at an irritating insect, so bug bites and stings occur on the paws as well. You’ll know if your pet was stung because the affected area will swell. Most stings and bites are not serious but if your dog’s reaction is particularly severe or he develops breathing difficulty, call you veterinarian immediately. Your pet may be having an allergic reaction.  For mild allergic reactions, your vet will likely prescribe pet medication such as an antihistamine or topical creme. In severe cases, a shot of epinephrine and emergency fluids may be needed.

This question crossed my mind many times with both of my cats Molly and now Atlantis. Atlantis was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism and Kidney disease.  My understanding is that Kidney disease cannot be reversed but after I took him for his third Vet visit after diagnosis, another blood test was taken and it revealed that his kidney disease had returned to normal along with his thyroid function. Our Vet predicted that this may happen when they got his thyroid function under control. I was skeptical but when I saw the test results, I was pleased to see a “high normal”kidney reading.

Atlantis started to slowly improve. He is now taking  Methamazole for his thyroid and an appetite enhancer. Although he was improving, I learned through experience that old age and kidney disease go hand in hand. Even though Atlantis’s test showed that his kidney function is now in a “normal” range, I felt that I needed to do the best I can to take care of his kidneys. I added a product called Astro’s oil to my cat Molly’s daily regimen and the results were very promising. In fact, after starting on Astro’s oil, Molly gave me five more years of love and affection.

I decided to start Atlantis on this great product. So what is Astro’s oil and why does it help improve kidney function? The answers coming up. Stay tuned!
