The moving process in general can be very stressful.  All of the packing, labeling, and dismantling all that you own can be a very tedious process. The pieces of your life get boxed up and relocated. It can also be stressful on your cat. After all his life is in an upheaval as well. Here are some things that you can do to make the move easier on your furry friend.

1. Get your cat used to riding in the car. Take him out for a few short rides just to make sure that the car ride doesn’t cause more stress than necessary.

2.If possible, introduce your cat to his new home before the big moving day.

3. Set up his litter, food and water bowls in the new home before the move.

4. On moving day, try to get a neighbor or friend to take your cat for a few hours while the movers are doing their thing.  Movers usually do their job very quickly. This can frighten your cat and cause him to bolt out of an open door.

5. Give your cat time to get used of his new home. Let him explore and sniff his way through the house. Before you know it, he will never even remember his old surroundings.

Cats and Dogs Eating Each Others Food

Sunday, February 27, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

Do you have several pets? Do they ever try to eat each others food? If so, it’s not a good idea to let the dog eat the cats food or the cat eat the dogs food. A little dog food every now and then probable won’t hurt your cat but a steady diet of dog food can make a cat ill. Cats are strictly meat eaters so they need more protein that’s not found in dog’s kibble. Cats also need specific B complex vitamins and amino acids that aren’t found in dog food. On the other hand, a dog’s occasional nibble out of a cat’s bowl probably won’t hurt him but cat foods are high in calories. A dog that eats lots of cat food could become obese. Obesity is a serious health risk for your dog. If your pets try to snatch food from one another, keep them separate when they eat. It’s a good idea to keep your dog’s water bowl and food bowl in a separate room.

How Dementia Affects Older Dogs!

Saturday, February 26, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

As our dogs get older, they can develop a type of dementia with has many similarities to Alzheimer’s  disease in people. This condition is called canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome and it often goes undiagnosed and untreated. Some signs of this disease include:

  • Disorientation such as getting stuck and not know how to free themselves.
  • Changes in interactions with people and other pets.
  • Changes in sleep patterns and well as sleep cycles and restlessness or pacing at night.
  • Urinary or fecal accidents in the house.
  • Altered activity level.
  • An increase in anxiety
  • A decrease in appetite.

These things can put a strain between the animal and their owner. The good news is that there are treatment options that can improve cognitive function in some dogs. Medications along with dietary therapy can help. See your vet who can guide you to the most effective treatment options.

How To Nurse a Newborn Kitten

Friday, February 25, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

When caring for a new born kitten without it’s mother, it’s important that it’s fed properly.  The first thing to do is sterilize the kitten sized bottles in boiling water for about five minutes. Make sure they are cool before using. Place a large towel, a rough wash cloth and a bowl of warm water next to a comfortable chair.  Fill the bottle with  kitten milk replacement such as KMR.  Warm the bottle by placing it in a bowl of very hot water. Test it on your forearm. The temperature should be between 95 and 100 degrees fahrenheit or approximately body temperature.  Test the nipple to make sure that the milk flows properly. The milk should not leak out when the bottle is turned up side down. The milk should flow out when the nipple is gently pressed with your fingers.

Sit in the chair with the towel folded on your lap. Place the kitten face down on your lap and make sure that the kitten is warm before feeding. If he’s cold, he could develop digestive problems after feeding.  Without raising the kitten’s head, place the nipple in his mouth.  He should start nursing right away. Continue nursing until he is finished but do not overfeed.

If the kitten does not start nursing right away, check the nipple again.  Stroke his head and gently pet his back to start nursing reflexes.  Once he gets the idea, he will nurse readily.

Like humans, kittens need to be burped after nursing.  Hold one hand under his abdomen and very gently pat his back.  To stimulate defecation, , use a warm damp wash cloth or paper towel and gently massage his genital area. Don’t despair if he does not defecate right away. Urinating may take a bit longer.

After he is  done  feeding,  put him back in his bed and let him sleep undisturbed.

Unusual Smell on Your Cat

Wednesday, February 23, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

You usually cannot smell anything unusual on your cat. They are very clean creatures and very rarely emit any odor at all. Cats are always grooming themselves so they rarely develop a nasty odor. You should pay attention if you notice a smell from your cat. Usually this is a sign that something is wrong. One of the most common odors is a fishy, musty smell that is produced from the cats anal gland. The oily contents of these glands are often released when a cat is excited or frightened.  Sometimes the glands become clogged and need to be cleared out by a veterinarian. The foul smell may stay on the cats coat for a few days.  If the problem persists, ask your vet to give your cat a thorough exam. Infections ,abscesses or an impacted tooth can result from chronic anal gland problems. So before you bring on the pet odor removal products have the problem checked out.

Does Cat Urine Odor Deter Mice?

Tuesday, February 22, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

There are many theories on this topic. Some experts do not believe that the smell of cat urine will cause mice to “scram” but from my experience, I believe that he smell of cat urine just may keep the mice away. I own a mobile home in Delaware for over eight years now. Mice can get into a mobile home quite easily and most of my neighbors have had mice in their homes at one point or another. I never had any mice (lots of bugs but no mice). I always take my two cats with me. I leave the kitty litter out when I leave and I believe that this may keep away, pesky mice.  If you want to try this, I recommend that you buy unscented kitty litter. In order for the mice to smell the cat urine, the kitty litter must not cover up the scent with perfumes and odor-block features. Keep an eye out for mice droppings. The are small, dark ovals. If you do have mice, place the litter in an area where you think the mice are entering. See if this works. Maybe you could prove the theory that cat urine does keep the mice away!

Music Can Help Dog Separation Anxiety

Monday, February 21, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

Music can be very useful in cases of separation anxiety.  Put on music about twenty minutes before you leave. This gives your dog time to soak in the musical rhythms and hopefully make him feel calm and content. Music sure that the volume is low but low enough to mask external sounds.  Once your dog is relaxed, leave for a very short time, two or three minutes at first. Leave quietly and don’t make any fuss. You want your dog to remain peaceful and quiet.  The music should keep your dog calm for that period of time. You can now gradually increase the time that you’re gone but continue to keep the music on. If you are playing a CD, make sure the music is beautiful and peaceful. Put it on repeat an don’t worry about your dog getting bored with it. Hopefully, over time, you should see an improvement in his separation anxiety.

A Welcome Change with Our Cat Millie

Sunday, February 20, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

Our cat Millie has been with us for 17 years now. She is a sweet little cat but was always over shadowed by our cat Molly. Molly was older and was with us longer until she passed away in 2018. Both Molly and Millie are females and we learned later  that if you have a female cat and adopt another female at a later time, they will probably not get along. This was the case with Molly and Millie. Molly was the dominant cat and really intimidated Millie. Millie usually stayed by herself and tried to stay out of Molly’s way. We later adopted a male cat  Atlantis from our neighbor who passed away last year. Millie still felt intimidated and usually stayed by herself.

Now that Millie’s our only cat, she has become more affectionate, loves to be in the same room as us and most amazing is that she now sits next to me all the time and loves to be pet. We are so glad that in her later years, we could finally show her the love and affection that she deserved all along.

All cats have different personalities but it is possible for a cat’s personality to change depending on the situation.

Dogs can be a great way to meet new people.  Usually, we need a reason to talk to people that we don’t know. While we are out walking our dog, strangers will often stop to pet or compliment our pet. These short encounters can often lead to a new friendships. I’ve met many neighbors here at my new place in Delaware as they were walking past my house with their dog.  Dogs can make it easier to meet people because they are a great way to start a conversation on neutral ground. We also get our exercise while walking and playing with our dogs. Besides their unconditional love, dogs can make socializing easier and even keep us healthier. More countless reason for you to adopt a dog! Do it today!

Keeping You Dogs Heart Healthy

Friday, February 18, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

We need good habits to stay healthy. This also is true for our pets.  Here are some tips that can keep your dog healthy and in shape.

  • Exercise – Dogs need regular exercise regardless of their size or age. Even older dogs need daily exercise to stay healthy, even if it’s just a few brisk walks per day. Exercise routines differ between size, breeds and age. Talk to your vet to find out what kind of exercise is best for your dog.
  • Diet –  A healthy diet is good for your dog’s heart as well as our own hearts.  Your dogs diet needs to be well balance  with high quality ingredients. Again, I recommend that you talk to your vet about which brand would be best for your dog and the amount to feed him.
  • Routine Checkups – Take your dog to the vet at least once a year for an annual checkup. Ask plenty of questions while you’re  there.

Seven tips for protecting your dogs heart.

  1. Keep an eye on your dog as they age. Check his energy levels and get any cough checked out.
  2. Make sure your dog maintains the proper body weight.
  3. Exercise your dog regularly.
  4. Watch for signs of heart disease.
  5. Some breeds may be more prone to heart disease. Know whether or not your breed is prone to heart disease.
  6. If your veterinarian hears a murmur, ask about heart disease.
  7. As mentioned above, take your dog for regular checkups.
