Girafus-Pro-track-tor-Pet-Safety-Tracker-RF-Technology-Dog-and-Cat-Tracker-Finder-Locator-Very-Light-Small-only-42gr-1-TAG-0When you bring home a new puppy, you’ll want to have a few essential accessories on hand. Especially formulated dog food especially formulated for puppies.  and tip proof food and water bowls. An adjustable cloth or nylon collar along with a dog leash for those frequent walks that you’ll be taking. A roomy crate, dog carrier or dog bed is also essential because your pup will do a lot of sleeping at first. Don’t forget about an ID tag and put it on his collar right away just in case he wanders off. You can also get a collar with GPS tracking so you can easily know just where that frisky pup is if he wanders. Other items that come in extremely handy include training pads, grooming supplies and toys for chasing and for chewing. Your energetic new pup will need things to keep him occupied when you’re busy or away from home.

Can Cats Get Car Sick?

Saturday, July 30, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

catcarrierWhen I lived in New Jersey, my two cats would make the 210 mile trip to Delaware practically every week. They did this for about ten years. When my cat Millie was younger she would frequently vomit in her cat carrier early on in the trip. We had to pull over, clean her carrier and move on. As she got older, the vomiting stopped. Cats can get motion sickness. One possible cause can be emotional. I believe that this was the case with Millie. She’s high strung and does not like being taken out of her cozy little environment.

Pet Md has put together a list of symptoms that can quickly identify cat motion sickness.

  • Excessive drooling (ptyalism)
  • Crying out in distress
  • Immobility, or acting afraid to move
  • Vomiting or regurgitation
  • Urinating or defecating

My cat Molly showed all of these signs. If you’re traveling, try to keep your cats carrier close to you. This way you can tell whether or not your cat is getting sick. It’s also a good idea to check with your vet. There may be some pet medication that can ease the discomfort of motion sickness.

Cat Play Aggression

Saturday, July 30, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

catplayingownerIt’ve very common. You are sitting on the floor playing with your cat giving him lots of pets and cat toys and suddenly you cat attacks you. He jumps, bites and suddenly scratches your hand. Your cat can become a sweet loving pet to a hunting animal in one second.  Why do cats do this? There are several reasons. First your cat could have been taken away from it’s mother too early and has never learned that it should withdraw it’s claws when playing. A mother usually teaches it’s kittens with a quick reprimand when he does this with his brothers and sisters.

Hands can also be associated with prey. Make sure you keep your hands out of the way and use a cat stick toy when playing. Cats love to chase stick toys and love cat toys which move my themselves.  Be patient, cats can sometimes  be a bit unpredictable.

Dogs Lovin That Car Ride!

dogwindowcarDoes your dog love to ride in the car? He doesn’t like being stuck in his dog crate or carrier. His head is stuck out the window and he loves the breeze and all of the things that he smells. What could be the harm in this? Eye injuries that’s what so many vets hate to see. Think of all of the things that go splat on your window and you can imagine how many potentially harmful things could get into your dog’s eyes. There is a compromise. Roll down your window just enough for the dog’s nose. Those great smells will still be there. All that’s missing is the risk to your dog’s vision. Don’t forget to buckle your dog up. A properly fitted seat belt harness will keep your dog in place and from harm when you make that sharp turn and remember for safety purposes, it’s always better to keep your dog in a crate or dog carrier while traveling in the car,

Feline Tummy Problems

kittenvetIt’s called inflammatory bowel disease, or irritable bowel syndrome but it’s just plain stomach trouble. This is not a happy time for a cat with a sensitive stomach or for the people who care for the cat. Chronic vomiting and diarrhea can have a lot of different causes. Sometimes changing cat food too quickly can cause these symptoms.

If any of these symptoms are occurring, get your cat to the vet for a diagnosis. Your vet might recommend a change of diet or administer pet medication to alleviate some of the symptoms.  If your cat is overly sensitive to any kind of protein, many pet companies are aware of this and offer specially formulated diets that contain easy to digest rice and egg protein in their cat food. Sensitive stomach is not at all uncommon with cats, and fortunately, it’s almost always manageable.

Appreciating You Beloved Pet

OWNER DOGANDCATYou wake up in the morning and your dog or cat is right there waiting for you. They are always happy to see you no matter what has happened. Even if you were apart for just a few hours, they make you feel that you are the most important person in the world. Your dog is wagging his tail and jumps up to give you hugs and kisses. You put on his dog leash and take him out for a walk and all of the stress from your day seems to melt away.  Your cat is a little more subtle but mine always get up from their naps to greet me. If I pick them up, they contently purr in my ear.

How is this for a gift, your pets give you undying loyalty, unconditional love, and everything good, honest and loving all wrapped up in a ball. It makes you appreciate your life and are glad that our pets are a big part of our lives.

So reward your best friend with a dog or cat toy and a comfortable dog or cat bed to sleep in and be thankful that he is always there for you!

Do Cats Know How You’re Feeling?

Thursday, July 28, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

sadownercatThe other day, I accidentally stepped on my cat Molly’s tail. She yelped! I felt so bad and started apologizing to her. Did she really know that I was upset? I reached for a cat treat to show her that I really felt bad for stepping on her tail.

Cats and humans have similar, hormonal, neurological and genetic makeups. No Molly would not scratch me to show that she was mad because I stepped on her tail. Humans express emotions similar to cats. For us, crying could signal sadness. For your cat, a snub may signal that she’s sad or mad. Cats are even known to express grief at the death of an owner.Your cat has a heightened sense of sight and smell, which helps him tune in to your emotions.

The look in their eyes, their ears’ position and tone says a lot. If your cat seems blue, talk to him. Cats respond to positive voices. He also shows happiness by arching his back up and down as you’re petting him. If he crouches to the ground, he’s likely uneasy. A thrashing tail means your cat is agitated and needs some time to himself.  Cat toys can help your cats mood by diverting their attention. You can bond with your cat by brushing him or having him sit on you lap while you pet him.

Cleaning Your Bird Cage

Wednesday, July 27, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

birdincageCleaning a bird cage can seem like a chore and you could tend to put it off frequently. Bird cages should be kept as clean as possible at all times. The first thing that you should do is select a particular day of the week to clean the cage and make sure that you stick to it. Here are some steps in cleaning your birds cage.

  1. Wash the cage tray.  – The tray should be removed and scrubbed with a damp rag and cage cleaner. Make sure that the tray is dry before putting the liners back in.
  2. Remove and scrub the grate.- The grate on the bottom of the cage must be removed weekly to remove any dried droppings that may have collected on it. Place the grate in the bathtub and use a  scrub brush to clean it. Make sure that it is completely dry before returning it to the cage.
  3. Clean and change the perches. –Perches can accumulate dirt and waste and can be a breeding ground for bacteria. They should also be soaked once a week. Wooden perches take a while to dry so it’s a good idea to have a few perches on hand and rotate them.
  4. Clean and rotate bird toys. – Much like babies, birds use their mouths to play with their toys. Remove, soak and scrub all toys once per week. It may be helpful to have a variety of toys so you can rotate these each week as you do with the perches.

The Right Feeding Schedule For Dogs

Wednesday, July 27, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

dogeatYou may think that feeding your dog is a no brainer but there are right and wrong feeding times for your dog. Most dogs eat their dog food twice per day. This stabilizes their metabolism and aids with digestion. You should select a feeding schedule and stick with it. Give dog food at 7:00am and 6:00pm. Remove any uneaten food but the dog water bowl should be kept filled with fresh water at all times. If you’re working on housetraining or have a dog who overdrinks, you can schedule the amount and times you provide it. But watch your dog carefully and, if he seems to be thirsty, increase the amount. A sample schedule for monitoring water would be:

  • 7:00 a.m. – Clean and fill bowl half-way.d
  • Noon – Rinse out and refill half-way.
  • 6:00 p.m. – Rinse and fill half-way.
  • Bedtime – Clean and fill bowl about 1/4 of the way.

Thanks to dogster.com for providing some of this information.

Are a Victim of Pet Allergies?

Tuesday, July 26, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

catsneezeYou have a dog and a cat and suddenly you get a phone call. It’s your sister who is bringing her kids to stay with you for the weekend. One of the kids has asthma and is allergic to almost everything including your cat and dog. What luck! So what do you do besides tell them to stay in a motel? I would start by trying to keep your pets dander down by brushing them everyday. You should also wipe your pets daily with a damp sponge. You can try an anti shedding spray for your dog. This product is usually available at pet stores. Ask your vet about product that reduce allergins in dander and saliva. You can use a damp sponge to apply these to your pet coat. Shampoo your pets every two weeks with a mild pet shampoo. Vacuum the house including the dog bed and cat bed. Change the cat litter box often. Make sure that you do not do any of these things while your visitor is in the house. That’s about the best that you can do. Good luck and have a good weekend with your sister’s kids!
