Are You Allergic to Your Pet?

Thursday, March 31, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

KITPUPUnfortunately, there is no pet medication that will eliminate the allergen that triggers allergic reactions. I have two cats. When I pet my older cat Mollie and then touch my eyes, they immediately get itchy and begin to tear. If I pet my younger cat Millie and touch my eyes, nothing happens. This is weird but certain cats, trigger certain allergies. An estimated 6 million people are allergic to cats and one third of them have cats in their homes including me. When my doctor told me to get rid of the cats, I told him where to go! Steps can be taken in the home to decrease one’s exposure to the cat allergen. Cat allergen is not actually cat hair but a protein that is present in the saliva and dander of the cat. The allergens become airborne and are inhaled into the nose or lungs. These produce the allergic reactions that you may experience. Cat allergen is sticky and carried on clothing. As far as I know there are no pet supplements or pet vitamins that can control dander or dry skin on pets.

There are some things that you can do if you do own a cat. I bought cat wipes and wipe down my cats every few days. This keeps their skin moist and reduces the amount of cat dander. This does help me. If you touch your cat, don’t touch your face and make sure that you wash your hands right away. If you are severely allergic and do not have a cat, then don’t consider getting one.

If you are like me, your allergy does not stop you. I have asthma and my cat did trigger attacks often. Instead of getting rid of my cat, I got rid of the asthma buy going to my doctor and getting on a preventative once a day inhaler. Now I have two cats and no asthma! You may have to consider limiting where your cat goes. Don’t let him on your bed or on furniture. Make sure that he has his own comfortable cat bed.

Your Neighbors Barking Dog

Wednesday, March 30, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

dogbarkI’m a dog and cat lover, so a barking dog doesn’t usually bother me. Some people are bothered by barking dogs.A barking dog can be a minor annoyance or a major problem, depending on how near he is, how loud he is and what time of the day (or night) he’s barking.  In general a bark every now and then usually is not a problem. If the problem is more serious than that this and the dog is barking at night keeping you and your kids up, then I would first talk to your neighbor. Though this won’t always solve the problem, you may be pleasantly surprised. The dog’s owner may be unaware that he’s bothering you and may be able to take simple measures like getting a dog gate and confining him to another area of the yard or  maybe giving him more exercise and more dog toys to play with. Your neighbor may also  leave a radio or television on during the day so the dog isn’t so conscious of every sound coming from the next apartment. Talking is always my recommendation first. You really don’t want to get law enforcement involved as this can affect the poor dog. As sarcastic as this may sound, your next option may be to move. I’m an animal lover and we need to learn to deal with those that are not!

Hire A Pet Sitter

Wednesday, March 30, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

petsitterBack in the days when I had a dog, I would be gone for many hours during the day. I would buy all types of dog toys. There were so many rawhide bones around the house that I could have filled an entire room with them! This did not keep my dog content while I was gone. It was quite apparent that he was lonely and need so much attention when I would arrive home. Looking back now at this situation really saddens me. Are you in the same type of situation now? Maybe you should consider hiring a Pet Sitter. If you decide to go this route, here are some things that you should remember.

1. The Pet Sitter should conduct himself/herself in a professional manner and give you his undivided attention while being interviewed.

2. Your Pet Sitter should have insurance and be bonded if they are with a pet sitting company.

3. The Pet Sitter should conduct business with honesty and integrity. They should also observe all federal, state and local laws pertaining to operating the business of animal care.

4. The Pet Sitter should have a least three references which you should check out thoroughly.

These following issues regarding your pet must also be considered when hiring a Pet Sitter.

1. Your pet needs to be comfortable with the pet sitter. You must allow time for your dog to get used to the Pet Sitter by allowing the sitter to come by several days while you’re at home, play with your dog and give him dog treats before being left alone with your pet.

2. The Pet Sitter must be interested in learning as much as possible about your pet. This includes eating habits, regular walks (always have that dog leash handy) health issues, temperament, exercise etc.

3. Make sure you give the Pet Sitter a list of emergency phone numbers in case your pet becomes ill or has an accident. This list should include your vets number, as well as the numbers of other vets in case your vet is not available.

4. The Pet Sitter must be knowledgeable of pet first aid and other concerns such as pet food re-calls.

5. You must agree that your Pet Sitter can or cannot have others visitors while they are pet sitting your dog.

6. Determine the Pet Sitter’s experience by asking some pointed questions during the interview.

7. You must be completely confident before offering the job. Treat this like hiring a nanny for your child.

Once you have a pet sitter, you will notice the change in your dogs attitute when you arrive home. You will no longer feel that he is being neglected and you will feel confident that his needs are being cared for.

Train Your Puppy To Go In His Dog Crate

Tuesday, March 29, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

dogincrateA good way to get started is to confine your puppy to a crate when you can’t supervise him. This not only keeps him out of trouble but it also helps to housebreak him and make him feel safe. In the wild, dogs crate their own sleeping quarters by digging a den. A crate serves the same purpose for domestic dogs. This is the reason why many dogs love their dog crates when they’re adults as well. Make sure that you buy the proper size dog crate pads and do not leave your dog in there longer than overnight. The crate makes a dog feel secure, his dog crate should be quite small. Small enough to feel like a den. The crate should be tall enough so that the dog can stand up, turn around and lie down with his spine straight. If you find that your crate is too big for your puppy, you can fill the extra space with a box until he grows. If you train him to go in his crate while he is still a puppy, you will have no problem as he get older. Just be certain not to keep your dog in the crate all the time. Dogs are social creatures and should get sufficient exercise and be with people as often as possible.

The Right Kind Of Bird Cage

Monday, March 28, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

BIRDCAGEIf your a new bird owner, there are some things your should know before selecting that special bird cage. Your bird’s cage should be as large as you can afford but also consider the space it will take up in your home. However, the bar spacing also needs to be right for your bird’s species so he can’t escape or get his head stuck between the bars. Try to avoid complicated cages that are multi-level, round or antique bird cages. This bird cage can cause your bird to get stuck between it’s parts. Antique or decorative bird cages may be coated with toxic paint, so make sure that you keep this in mind. As you search for the right kind of bird cage, remember, bigger is always better.

Pet Blood Donors Save Lives!

Monday, March 28, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

dogdonorIf a dog or cat gets hit by a car, poisoned or has been injured and bleeding, an emergency blood transfusion can save it’s life. Where does this much needed blood come from? Beth Davidow, of the Animal Critical Care and Blood Bank in Seattle, Washington says that most of it comes from healthy pets whose owners get them involved as community blood donors. She says that many pet owners are concerned that other animals have blood available if they really need it. To become a donor, a dog must be free of diseases, not on any medication and is willing to lie still for dog treats while it’s blood is drawn. Cats can donate to but they must be anesthetized. If you want your pet to help other pets in need, you can ask your vet to help you find a program in your area. After your dog donates make sure you reward him with a new stuffed dog toy! After all his donation will go a long way!

The Comfort of Pet Carriers and Dog Crates!

Sunday, March 27, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

CATINCARRIERMy older cat Mollie, once feared and hated her pet carrier. As soon as I would take it out, she would hide. It was difficult getting her to go inside. She would resist and I would have to practically shove her inside! After awhile, I left the carrier out with the door open. After awhile, she started going inside herself. She would sleep in it for hours!  I would frequently give her a cat treat in the carrier. Now, she no longer fears her pet carrier and spends many hours inside when it’s open. If you just brought home a new puppy, you may want to keep the dog crate open. Before you know it, you’ll find your new pup sleeping inside.

If you bring home a new kitten or puppy, try to get her used to her cat carrier or dog crate right away. Keep the carrier or crate within your dog or cats sight with the door open, put in a soft blanket and some of her favorite toys. Feed her inside the carrier and before you know it, getting her inside will no longer be such a chore.

Easter, Pets and Chocolate

Sunday, March 27, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

DOGCHOCHappy Easter! As a kid, I always remembered waking up to an big Easter Basket filled with a big solid chocolate bunny and lots of chocolate goodies inside. Chocolate, a favorite among adults and children alike, could be deadly to our pets. Pet Education.com has published an explanation as to why this favorite adult treat could really do harm to pets.

Some cats tolerate chocolate better than others. Although the toxic dosage varies from animal to animal, everyone agrees that chocolate contains a lethal ingredient, a methylxanthine called theobromine, and that baking chocolate contains 10 times more of this lethal ingredient than milk chocolate.

Theobromine acts on four areas of your cat’s body:

It increases the rate and force of contractions of the heart.
It acts as a diuretic, causing your pet to lose body fluids.
It affects the gastrointestinal system, causing vomiting and diarrhea and it may cause stomach ulcers.
It acts on the nervous system, causing convulsions, seizures and sometimes, death.

Get out those dog toys and take your dog outside for some exercise and keep those dog treats and cat treats on hand. Your best friends will be too full and pooped out to scout out any chocolate left around the house. Seriously, keep all chocolate away from your pet.

Reducing Infectious Agents in Cat Feces.

Saturday, March 26, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

catselfcleaninCat feces contain several infectious agents such as the Toxoplasma gondii parasite which can cause toxoplasmosis. People with strong immune symptoms may never experience any of the symptoms associated with toxoplasmosis. However, women that are pregnant, children and those who suffer from immunodeficiencies (such as HIV infection)are at an increased risk for this disease. For those who are at high risk, symptoms can be severe and may include brain, eye or organ damage. E. coli infection is another risk associated with cat feces. While most strains of E. coli are harmless, some can cause serious illness, especially in children under five.

With all of this said, a self cleaning litter box can reduce the risk of parasitic infection associated with cat feces. They also make cleaning litter boxes and waste disposal easier and more convenient than ever before.  They work very well with all types of litter including litter made with natural ingredients such as wheat and corn and also work well with clumping litter. Self cleaning litter boxes can really help to reduce infectious waste because they are cleaning consistently. The little genie waste disposal system is a great way to keep everything sanitary and smelling great!
