Doggie Infections of the Urinary Tract

Thursday, March 31, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

It’s not uncommon for our pets to get sick every now and then. One of the more common conditions in dogs is an infection of the urinary tract. If left untreated, urinary tract infections can lead to even more serious bladder and kidney issues. This could put your dog at great risk. A healthy bladder is always free of bacteria. Symptoms of a urinary tract infection include:

  • Frequent urination in small quantities.
  • Accidents in the home because of the inability to hold urine.
  • Foul smelling urine.
  • Blood in the urine.

It’s important to take your dog to the vet immediately as that the appropriate tests will be run and the proper diagnosis made. Urinary tract infections are treated with pet medication such as antibiotics. Typically, your dog will be placed on a two week cycle to ensure that all of the bacteria is eradicated. Don’t delay treatment for your dog. Take him to the vet as soon as you notice any symptoms.

How to Protect Your Cat from Preditors

Tuesday, March 29, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

If your cat is an out door cat, you must be concerned about predators such as Coyotes, birds of prey and fox. This is especially true if you live in a wooded or very rural area. Found in every U.S. state except Hawaii, coyotes eat whatever they can find, including seeds and fruit as well as small animals (alive or dead). They pose a particular threat to cats and small dogs.Coyotes can breach many barriers but there are some ways to protects your pets. You can install a coyote proof fence. This measures about six feet high and has a bar or a woven extension at the top. The fence extends into the ground which prevents the Coyote from digging underneath it.  Install motions sensitive lighting. You should also trim areas of your landscape that pose as hiding places for predators like heavy, bushy areas. Remove bird feeders and pick up any fallen fruit or nuts from trees. Keep trash bins in the garage or use animal resistant cans if they are allowed by your collector. Never put a bell on your cats collar and keep his food and water bowls inside.  Supervise your cat while he’s in the yard and of course, never feed wild life. The best way to keep your cat safe is keep him indoors but I know that you knew that I was going to say that!

Is Purchasing Pet Medication online Safe?

Monday, March 28, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

Technology has come a long way. Now we could do almost anything online even buy our pet’s medication but is it safe?  The FDA has warned about buying prescription medication online.  The truth is buying pet medication online is very safe. You get the same medication as the ones you get from the vets office but you must d0 your homework first.

To make sure that you get legitimate medications, make sure that you’re on a secure internet site. You should see a small gold padlock in the status bar of your browser (usually on the bottom). If the gold padlock is open the page is not encrypted. If the gold padlock is closed that means the sight has 128 bit encryption which means that it offers the highest level of protection offered for all your Internet communications, including credit card use and other financial transactions. It is important to note that the only place the locked padlock is important is on the page where you are entering your credit card or bank information. It does not have to appear on every page of the website. Make sure that you are ordering the exact medication that your vet prescribed. When in doubt, always verify with your vet. You must also know the dosage so before you attempt to order pet meds online, it is vital that you have this information correct!

The advantage of buying online is that you may get the medication a bit cheaper but that’s not the main reason. Taking your pet in to the vet can be risky if there are other sick pets in the waiting area. If your pet is sick, you probably would rather keep him home and not disturb him .In this case getting the medication delivered has it’s advantages.

You just saw a small dog run by that seemed like a small version of the Greyhound.  You may have seen an Italian Greyhound.  This is an ancient canine breed  that has all of the sleek proportions of a full size greyhound. These dogs are barely a foot tall. If you compare a regular greyhound to, lets say a bus, then the Italian greyhound could be compared to an Italian sports car. They have the same easy going, sweet disposition of the larger greyhounds and the desire to run.  It was a favorite of Italian noblemen and if you know anything about art, you would know that the miniature greyhound is frequently seen in renaissance art.  So now you’re thinking that the Italian greyhound would make a perfect apartment dog right?  You are partially correct. They are good for apartments in terms of size, but they require lots of exercise. You can’t just put on his dog leash and stoll around the neighborhood. These dogs like to run in wide open spaces. So if you live in a city, you way want to re-consider owning an Italian greyhound.

All cats have excellent navigational skills and some travel many miles and make it home. This sometimes happens after a move. The cat will actually return to its former home. Unfortunately, not all cats make it, especially if they have been de clawed and are not used to being outside. They can no longer defend themselves in the event that they get attacked by another animal. There is also the possibility that they will be hit by a car.  The chances of this happening drastically increase if the cat lives in an urban area.

Cats can also choose whether or not they will go back to their original owner. They might just stay with another friendly person. There was someone whom I know that lost their cat. Their owner found him 3 years later about seven miles away with another family. This cat would go outside every now and then, so he was used to the territory. The owner let him stay with the new owners.

I always recommend getting your cat micro chipped whether he’s an indoor or outdoor cat. This way, if he does stray too far from home, his owners can always be located provided that he gets to a veterinarian or shelter.

Keep Your Dogs Water Bowl Clean

Friday, March 25, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

Dogs like to have their own dog food bowls but do you need more than one water bowl for more than one dog?  What about the germs in each dog’s mouth?  Just like humans, dogs have lots of bacteria in their saliva. We shouldn’t call them all germs because some bacteria serve a useful purpose. The bad bacteria gets zapped by acid in the dog’s stomach when it swallows.  Some diseases that dog’s pass along  are respiratory and some are transmitted by fecal contamination. If your dog has a compromised immune system, I wouldn’t let him share a water bowl or drink the water from any bowls that thoughtful store owners may keep outside their store for our canine friends.

Dogs with healthy immune systems can safely share one water bowl. Always keep plenty of water around. Adult dogs are 60% water so they need lots of hydration.

The Importance of Fatty Acids

Thursday, March 24, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

Fatty acids are specific poly unsaturated fats that keep your dog’s coat and skin shiny and healthy. One class, the omega 6 fatty acid are especially important to an animal’s health because they help support the immune system and help regulate the blood flow. Fatty acids are not automatically produced by your dog’s body, so they must be provided in their diet. They’re naturally found in animal fats and vegetable oils and most commercial dog foods contain the proper types and ratios. Some dogs with skin problems and certain health conditions may benefit from fatty acid supplements so ask your vet for a recommendation. He or she may suggest adding sunflower oil to your pets food.

Do Dogs and Cats Suffer from Hypertension?

Tuesday, March 22, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

Did you ever think that only humans can get high blood pressure?  Cats and dogs can also suffer from hypertension.  Most of the time, they will never show any obvious signs of the disease.  The ability to recognize and to treat hypertension in dogs and cats is a relatively recent development in veterinary medicine.  Treatment for a pet with high blood pressure may include a low salt diet and pet medication to lower their blood pressure.  It has been found that in pets, hypertension is almost always secondary to some other disorder which may include diabetes, kidney disease or thyroid disease.  The chance of treating the hypertension really increases if you are able to discover and eradicate the underlying disease.

Queen of the House

My cat Millie always kept to herself. She slept in our back bedroom and would come out for brief periods for food and water. Since we lost our cats Molly and Atlantis, Millie is now out and about. She loves to sit with us every evening. She snuggles up to me and loves getting pet. She now spends most of her time in our family room rather than hiding in our back room.

When we adopted Millie seventeen years ago, our cat Molly was already with us for six years. They really never got along and Molly was obviously the dominant cat. She would not let Millie in the bathroom to get to her litter box, she would chase her and swat her and poor Millie would retreat to a quiet, safe place in the house.

After Molly passed, we adopted Atlantis, a beautiful cat who never did anything to intimidate Millie but the damage was already done. Millie was intimidated by Atlantis and kept to herself. Now that Atlantis is also gone, Millie is our only cat. She has really become more social. Now it’s her time and I’m glad that we can  spend some quality time with our little Millie. We cannot adopt another pet as it will send Millie back into hiding and we have no intentions of doing that!

A cats behavior can change if the circumstances change but it’s a slow gradual change.

You use many different products on your hair, body and skin but what about when you groom your dog?  How many different treatments do you need to apply?  Shampoo is the only requirement. You can consider using a conditioner if your dog is itchy or bathes frequently.  Conditioner can keep longer fur from getting tangled and may help your dog’s skin retain moisture.  It can also make your dog cozier to cuddle with.  The key to caring for your dogs coat is to choose products that meet your dog’s specific needs. Check with your veterinarian to see what he or she recommends.  Remember that proper nutrition is the key to a healthy coat. Make sure to always feed your dog high quality, appropriate food.
