Keep Your Dog and Cat Away From The Halloween Treats
It’s candy…so much candy that you don’t know what to do with it all. You’ve just come back from trick or treating with your kids and now it’s time to sort through all of that candy. Make sure you are careful and don’t let any of it fall on the floor and don’t leave any of it out within reach of your dog or cat. Hard candy is harmful depending on the ingredients .Xylitol is a common sweetener used instead of sugar and is highly poisonous, causing kidney failure in dogs .
Chocolate is very dangerous to both dogs and cats. It contains both caffeine and theobromine. Both of these drugs can be toxic to a cat.
These drugs are two different types of stimulants that affect the central nervous system and the heart muscle, as well as increasing the frequency of urination
Keep your pets safe this Halloween!

Time Flies With Our Pets!
Time really flies for both ourselves and our cat companions. Look up one day and your feline friend is not as spry as a kitten and spending more time in her cat bed. Around eight or nine years, cats become prone to the ills of old age. They can develop chronic kidney or liver disease and maybe even diabetes or tumors. Their senses of site, smell, hearing and taste may begin to diminish. As their metabolism changes, a dietary adjustment may be necessary. The later years in humans and cats is no time to carry around too much weight. My older cat Mollie is fifteen years old and was a bit over weight. I am giving her food for indoor cats only and trying lesser amounts and this did the trick. Cats don’t get Alzheimer’ s but they get forgetful as they get older. Through it all, with modern veterinary medicine and your loving care, your cats nine lives can extend into the teens and even early twenties.

What To Do If Your Pet Ingests A Poisonous Substance
What can you do to be prepared in the event that your dog or cat eats something poisonous? If you fear that your pet has ingested something that is poisonous, call your veterinarian or poison control center immediately. It’s a good idea to keep hydrogen peroxide in the house in case your vet advises you to induce vomiting. Don’t administer this or any other pet medication on your own. Wait until you vet tells you how to what to do or call the National Animal Poison Center at 1-888-426-4435. They charge $50.00 per case. The Center will do as many follow up calls that are necessary in critical cases. They will also contact your veterinarian at your request. The center will also provide any treatment protocols via fax when needed. Don’t wait! If you suspect that your pet may have ingested something that is poisonous, you have no time to lose!

Are Some Dog Breeds Lazy?
Some dogs don’t have much interest in high end activities such as running, racing or playing frisby. They prefer a laid back life style and require only a 20 minute walk twice a day. There are some breeds that fall into this category. Among them are the Bulldog, Shih Tzu, St Bernard and Pekingese. Dogs that are couch potato’s range in size from very large to petite. Despite the fact that they love to stay in their dog beds and rest, they are not pushovers! They can be uncooperative, stubborn and quick to take an assertive role in the absence of a human. They do like their long naps but they also need guidance, discipline and regular exercise.

Myths About Black Cats
It’s almost Halloween and their are always myths about the poor black cat. Fact: Black cats are beautiful and should be given as much love and attention as other cats. My cat Molly is a black cat and I’ve never had a closer bond with an animal! FACT: Black cats are only half as likely to be adopted as cats of other colors. This is because people associate black cats with bad luck. The only bad thing about black cats is that they are the last to get adopted because superstitious people associate them with bad luck…….NONSENSE! To associate at black cat with bad luck is a myth dating back to the Middle Ages when black cats were associated with witchcraft. ( The Middle Ages was a very weird period in history!) Did you know that many cultures actually worship the black cat? They were worshiped in Egypt where owning a black cat was thought to bring good luck.
Another myth is that black cats are sacrificed on Halloween. Experts at the ASPCA agree that this is false. However, pranksters and people looking to hurt animals will target any animal, regardless of breed or coat color. I always recommend that you bring all of your pets in on Halloween to keep them safe from the many “nuts” out there!

Should You Buy Insurance For Your Pet?
Whether you like it or not, disasters can happen and your pet can become ill. To be sure that you will be able to care for your pet in the event of an emergency, you may want to consider purchasing pet insurance. Just as human medical insurance, there are a range of coverage options that are available. Most policies cover routine preventative care as well as unexpected injuries and illness. You will likely encounter deductables and copays. Preexisting or medical conditions may not be covered. The cost of pet insurance can range from $1,000 to $6,000 over the lifetime of your pet. This can help cover the cost of pet medication and medical expenses. Do your homework before making this investment but if you do, you will benefit from it!

Test Your Cat’s IQ
Do you know how smart your cat is? One way to test his intelligence is to look at his ability to discern object permanence. This is a test that was designed to test cognitive development in children but you can apply it to cats as well.
Show your cat an object in plain view such as a toy. Then hide the toy by placing a solid object in front of it like a file folder. If your cat looks behind the object for the toy rather than thinking that it just disappeared, he can be ranked with the intelligence of an 18 month old child. This is pretty good!
Super smart cats are capable of thinking like a two year old child. They will be able to follow the trajectory of an object that moves out of view. In other words if a live mouse runs under your sofa, your cat should be able to predict where he will come out and pounce on it as it reappears.
Don’t underestimate the intelligence of your cat.

Adopting a Cocker Spaniel
The American Cocker Spaniel can make the perfect family pet and companion. Cocker Spaniels are bred to be stable, calm and sweet pets. They should be loyal, loving and trustworthy too. However as with all dog breeds, you may encounter a cocker spaniel that has been bred without concern for temperament. Occasionally, you will run across a cocker spaniel that is high strung, nervous or unpredictable. Like any dog, Cocker Spaniels need to be well socialized as puppies. When looking for any pure bred dog including the Cocker Spaniel, make sure that you check out all aspects of the individual animal. A good breeder will have carefully considered, size, temperament, health and confirmation. So good luck with you new Cocker Spaniel and make sure you train him properly in his pet carrier or crate.

To Board Or Not To Board
Cats are creatures that like the comforts of home. Unlike dogs, they rather be in their safe sanctuary than be taken along on a trip. I travel back and forth to Delaware and most of the time, I take my cats. This is because I started doing this when they were very young and I never left them alone. They are still not too fond of the car but for the most part, they travel well. Most cats won’t. If you’re planning a trip, the best option that I can recommend is to find someone who will stay with your cats in your house . Even though you’re not there, they will be in a familiar environment surrounded by familiar scents and they will be on their own turf. A relative or close friend is best Ifthis doesn’t work, start interviewing professional sitters who are licensed and bonded and belong to a national organization such as Pet Sitters International or the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters. If you choose a pet resort, look for the same credentials and it’s always best to have someone recommend one to you.

Seizure Response Dogs
So called seizure response dogs provide support for people with epilepsy by helping prevent unintentional injuries during and after a seizure. Some of these seizure dogs are able to predict when their owner is going to have a seizure. The dog will alert the person by whining, pawing or circling. There are many stories of this happening but scientists are not sure as to how and why some dogs seem to have this ability. Many people suspect that the dogs respond to very sight visual or hearing changes that occur during the early stages of a seizure. Some research suggest that the dogs are responding to psychological not epileptic seizures. Regardless, it shows how strong the bond can be between people and pets. These dogs are very special and deserve lots of love and affection!
