Very Expensive Cat Breeds

Friday, April 29, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

There are several expensive cat breeds but the ones that are the most expensive to adopt is the Bengal cat and the Savannah Cat. The Bengal cat has short hair and are a hybrid from the domestic feline and an Asian Leopard Cat. Most of the time, this cat is fairly active so make sure that you provide plenty of cat toys.  They also enjoy being around people which makes them a great house cat. The price tag of Bengal cat ranges from hundreds to thousands  of dollars.

The Savannah cat is a medium size cat.  These breeds are loyal, social and love to play.  Savannah cats can cost as much as $20,000.

The Scottish Fold is a spoiled cat and often meows a lot to get attention. It comes from a natural gene mutated breed and has “foldable” ears. The price of these cats range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars.

Is It Safe To Let Your Dog Swim in the Ocean?

Thursday, April 28, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

With proper precautions, it can definitely be safe to let your dog swim in the ocean but beware of sharp objects like rocks, shells, coral and other objects.

Be aware that hazards can exist both on the shore and in the water.Dogs  will romp on the beach and spend some time running into the water.

Sharp shells and rocks can damage a dog’s paw pads. If the beach has any litter, it also has the potential to be dangerous. Not only can some of the litter be sharp and cut your dog, like pieces of metal or glass, but it might also be dangerous if eaten.

You should also be aware of any rip currents that exist in the ocean. If there are rip current warnings up, don’t let your dog run into the ocean. It’s a good idea to keep him on a leash if this warning has been posted. While your dog may be able to safely swim out of them, it’s important to be aware to prevent this from happening in the first place.

One way to help your dog in case of a rip current is to fit them with a proper life jacket. In case your dog gets too tired while swimming, a well-fitted life jacket will help keep your dog afloat and safe while swimming in the ocean.

Knowing When To Call The Vet

Wednesday, April 27, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

Suppose that you notice that your dog just isn’t acting like herself, how do you know when to call your veterinarian?  First be assured that your hunch that there is something wrong will be taken very seriously by your veterinarian. You know your dog better than anyone else.  When you call the veterinary clinic, be prepared for questions like is your dog panting?  salivating?  Were has she been and what has she’s been eating?  If you prefer, before you call, look up symptoms in a pet first aid book or on the web. A systematic review of symptoms will help you and your vet know what to do next.  It could be nothing and your dog will be her old self by dinner time or maybe it’s time for a checkup. Even if there is any doubt in your mind, don’t hesitate to ask and always call your vet for any abnormal symptoms or behavior. Never administer any pet medication without the professional advice or your vet.

Rollerblading is a great activity to do with a high energy dog but it’s important to follow some safety guidelines.  If it’s hot outside, don’t roller blade midday.  Head out in the cool morning and be sure to bring along some fresh water for both you and your pet. Wear protective gear such as a helmet and knee pads and keep your dog on a short leash to keep him from crossing in front and tripping you up.  Go at a comfortable speed, one that the dog can comfortably maintain and work up to longer distances slowly. Try to find a paved path with a dirt or grassy edge for the dog to run on.  This will be easier on his joints and paw pads.  Remember, give him lots of praise as he’s trotting along and stop when he’s had enough.

Law in Delaware Helps Prevent Animal Cruelty

Sunday, April 24, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

A  bill that was passed in Delaware several years ago that helps prevent animal cruelty. This allows first responders to break into in a parked or stopped vehicle with an animal trapped inside under dangerous or deadly conditions. This includes extreme heat (or even moderate heat if all of the windows are closed) and extreme cold. Before this bill, there was no law in Delaware that enabled first responders to break into these vehicles. Every summer, we see poor dogs and cats stuck in a hot car and their owner is no where to be found! This is animal abuse and there is too much of it going on in this country. I will say it again “If you’re crazy, don’t own an animal.” I say this because obviously  these kind of abusive people are “CRAZY.”

This bill could save lots of poor animals and ruin lots of cars but that’s Okay! More states must adopt this law.

Do Dogs Exhibit Signs of Jealousy?

Saturday, April 23, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

If you pay attention to another dog, will your pouch get pissed? The answer is yes he will! Researchers at the University of California, San Diego asked the owners of 36 small dogs to pay attention to  an animated stuffed dog. They also were to give lots of attention to a plastic jack-o’-lantern bucket and read a children’s book aloud, all while ignoring their pet. More than three-quarters of the dogs pushed or touched their owners or the object when it appeared that their master was praising another dog. Some even snapped at the fake puppy the study said.

So when you’re in the dog park paying attention to another persons dog, be aware that your dog is feeling a little slighted. He may even give you the “evil eye.” So shower him with love and affection!

Our Dogs Also Serve as Our Security System

Friday, April 22, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

Our dogs not only offer us love and companionship but they also serve as our protectors. If any prowlers or burglars want to gain access to our house, a dogs bark will usually steer them away. I once had a little Chihuahua and his bark was so loud that he sounded much larger than his was. I lived in a third floor walk up apartment. There were six apartments on each floor. Anytime anyone would get up to the third floor, my little Chihuahua would bark up a storm. Some neighbors would complain until one day. Burglars gained access to the apartment during the day when most people were at work. They broke into several apartments in the basement, 1st and 2nd floors but they didn’t go near any of the apartments on the third floor because the terrifying bark of my little Chihuahua scared them away! He was now the hero of the third floor and all of the neighbors suddenly didn’t mind his bark at all. In fact….they liked it!

Another tip. Whether or not you own a dog, if you go on vacation, keep a dog bowl full of water and keep it outside either in the front or back of the house in clear view. This way any would be home invaders will be deterred thinking that their is a dog in the home.

Hints that Our Feline Friends Leave us

Thursday, April 21, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

Your cat will leave you hints to let you know how they feel. If you’re lazy about cleaning the litter box, your cat may leave you a smelly present on your favorite chair or your pillow. Cats are very clean animals and like their environment to be clean also. This is why the are always cleaning themselves. Do you ever notice that sometimes your cat cleans himself after you’ve petted him or picked him up?  That’s because they’re angry that you touched them and are cleaning off your scent. What an insult! Another insult is when a cat turns his back on you and flicks his tail. When he does this, he is really ticked off. What did you do to make him so mad? Another form of communications is verbal. When your cat is meowing, he is calling attention to something like, he’s hungry, wants t0 play or wants you to change the litter box. My cat Millie will meow of go over and stand by her snack bowl to tell me what she wants!

An Unexplained Power of Dogs

Wednesday, April 20, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

We’ve always heard stories about dogs warning their owners about fires in the house or some other event they may pose a danger to their owner.Back when I lived in Hoboken, New Jersey,  I once had a dog who started jumping on me at 5:00 am on a Saturday morning. I got ready to take him out, but realized that he didn’t want to go and ran back upstairs to the bedroom. I got back in bed and he began to jump and bark again. A few seconds after that, I felt a vibration and heard a rumble which lasted only for a few seconds. Since I don’t live in an earthquake prone area, I thought it was some kind of explosion. Later that morning, I turned on the radio and heard that there had been a small earthquake up in Westchester county N.Y. that could be felt in parts of northern New Jersey. I knew immediately that my dog sensed this when he jumped on me and barked earlier that morning.

I believe this is one of the most endearing things we love about owning a dog, because a dog’s sixth sense is often much better than a human’s. This most likely is genetically encoded in modern domesticated dogs and has been passed down for their ancestors—wild wolves who needed all their instincts to survive in the wild.
