New Years Resolution – Adopt a Pet

Thursday, December 31, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

If you want to do something wonderful in 2021, why not adopt a pet?  Studies show that owning a loving dog or cat can decrease your blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride levels and reduce depression, anxiety and loneliness.  It’s also believed that developing a close bond between you and your pet, offers significant social, physiological and psychological benefits. Owning a dog appeals to and is beneficial to people of all ages. According to Animal League of America, children learn responsibility, value for life, socialization and have higher self-esteem while adults and seniors enjoy the companionship and the feelings of self-worth and purpose that taking care of an animal instills. Pet owners smile more, laugh more and form special friendships with other animal owners and lovers. So do your self a favor, adopt a pet in the new year!

The Most Pet Friendly Places in America

Tuesday, December 29, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

There are places in America that are more suitable for pets than others. This includes establishments like hotels and restaurants that allow pets and places where dogs can run, play and enjoy their life. According to Forbes Magazine, Colorado Springs, Colorado tops the list of Americas most pet friendly city. The reasons for this are generous public space, ample veterinary care and wealth of pet-friendly retailers . All these things added up to heaven on earth for this small metropolis of just under 400,000 people and their estimated 61,000 dogs and 54,000 cats.

The following outlines how Forbes Magazine reached this conclusion:

To find out where pets and their owners are most welcome, we measured the country’s 50 largest cites to see which had the most public park acreage, including those parks tailored specifically for dogs (the second most common pet after cats and the ones that require the most outdoor facilities), the most pet supply and service businesses, and the most veterinary facilities. We also looked at which cities typically charge the least for veterinary care. We measured the statistics on both a per capita basis, or against each city’s human population, and on a “pet capita” basis–against the city’s estimated pet population. Those cities with the most vets, public parks, dog parks and pet businesses, both per person and per animal, shot to the top of the list.

Colorado Springs ranked in the top 20 in all the categories. The city has more than 10,000 acres of public park space, or almost a tenth of an acre for every pet. It also features seven dog parks and 113 veterinarians.

A Tumultuous Year Is Fading Away

Monday, December 28, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

Undoubtedly this has been one of the worst years of our lives. Many lost jobs, homes, loved ones and while this was all going on we were under the spell of a very devious, horrific President and Administration, lying, undermining democracy, denying the deadly virus, spewing dirt and propaganda at every breath. How much could we take? The antics are still continuing with this very deranged President and I believe that they will continue until the last day that he’s in office!  Our democracy was attacked by a Category 5 hurricane. The walls shook, windows rattled and at times it felt as if the whole structure would break apart but it didn’t. Democracy was shaken to it’s core and this should never happen again. We were on the verge of becoming a Dictatorship because of the actions of a narcissistic, autocratic leader. Conspiracy theories and lies were radiating on fraudulent right wing fanatical media outlets like FOX, Newsmax ,Breitbart and OANN. The damage that these outlets inflicted on our country is unimaginable! Millions of minds were poisoned probably never to be de-programmed and set on a recovery course. By the way, in case you are still unaware, Joe Biden won the popular vote by 7,000,000 votes and won 306 electoral votes. He is the next President of the United States. In case your still in doubt, stop making fools out of yourselves and suck it up!

My partner and I personally had a difficult year but not nearly as bad a millions of other Americans and for that we are grateful. While watching a very contentious impeachment trial in January, our beloved cat Atlantis became very ill and there were times we thought that we might lose him. We adopted him in the Summer of 2019 from our neighbor who has since passed away and he was 15 years old at the time we adopted him. We were unaware of his health issues. After numerous trips to the Vet, he was diagnosed with Kidney disease and Hyperthyroidism. After months of trying different kinds of treatments we finally got him on the right course. He’s on the right medication and we added Astro’s Oil products to his daily regime and as of this writing he’s doing well.

The Coronavirus has stripped us of our everyday lives. I’ve had to put a hold on my Substitute Teacher job because of my age and undying conditions. We have followed the experts and Scientists advice  and curtailed all social activities. I’ve been keeping busy running Edgewater Gold Radio, my internet radio station, writing a memoir, cooking and reading. My partner is thankfully still working at the hotel under extreme caution of course.

Many friends and relatives were diagnosed with Coronavirus and many had severe illness and some are no longer with us.

Personally I’ve lost many friends, not to the virus but to the wave of illness that has taken over their minds. I can never accept the fact that some people still support such unprecedented evil, deception, conspiracy theories and lies. I was also very disheartened  by how many racist individuals existed in my circle.  This rattled the core of my soul and I rejected the negative, destructive energy and eliminated these individuals from my personal orbit.  This is very sad indeed but part of the fallout from this disastrous administration.

With the dawn of 0f a new year, I’m hopeful that we will slowly see a return to some kind of normal. The vaccine distribution has begun and we will welcome a new President and Administration who will restore the integrity  and respect to  the office. Just the fact that we will have a President who puts the country first and who will build back and protect the interests of all Americans gives me hope and hope is that first step in moving into a new dawn and a new day.

So we welcome 2021 and as the curtain rises on this new year lets all try to sweep the last four years out the door!

Happy New Year!

Pay Attention To Unusual Smells from Your Cat

Sunday, December 27, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

Cats are always grooming themselves so they rarely develop a nasty odor. You should pay attention if you notice a smell from your cat. Usually this is a sign that something is wrong. One of the most common odors is a fishy, musty smell that is produced from the cats anal gland. The oily contents of these glands are often released when a cat is excited or frightened.  Sometimes the glands become clogged and need to be cleared out by a veterinarian. The foul smell may stay on the cats coat for a few days.  If the problem persists, ask your vet to give your cat a thorough exam. Infections ,abscesses or impactions can result from chronic anal gland problems. So before you bring on the pet odor removal products have the problem checked out.

Remember, your pets count!

Essential Items for a New Puppy

Saturday, December 26, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

When you bring home a new puppy, you’ll want to have a few essential items on hand. Formulated puppy food is a must.  A tip proof food and water bowl is also recommended. Puppies are a bit clumsy and instead of wiping up the floor all the time and refilling the water bowl. it’s a good idea to get a bowl that will not tip over that easily.  An adjustable cloth or nylon collar is also very important along with a dog leash for all of those walks that you’ll be taking.  A dog crate or carrier that is roomy is also a must have because your pup will sleep a lot at first.  Don’t forget to get an ID tag and put it on his collar in case he wanders off.  Other items that come in very handy include training pads, grooming supplies and toys for chasing and for chewing. Your energetic pup will need things to keep him occupied when your away or at work.

Remember, your pets count!

A Heartwarming Story for Your Holiday

Thursday, December 24, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

One day, a customer raced into a hardware store in south western Wisconsin and told the manager that there was  what sounded like a kitten yowling loudly inside of a pickup truck. The manager ran out to investigate and he heard the sound of  the frantic kitten too. The sounds were  coming from inside a wheel well. But the manager couldn’t see the kitten. The manager whose name was Bob ran back into the store and told a staff member to call the Humane Society and the police department. He asked another staff member to try to find the owner of the vehicle.  Bob got his tools and crawled under the truck. He saw the kitten but could not get to him.

Soon the animal control officer showed up, as did a patrolman. A television station crew showed up too alerted by a report on police radio scanner!

Bob still worked hard and he finally freed the tiny kitten, pulled him out and handed him over to the animal control officer. The TV Crew interviewed them and the segment aired that afternoon and evening. The kitten went to the Humane Society where it was examined and later adopted.

I love this true story because we live in a world where cats are so often devalued, there are ordinary people who will urgently do everything in their power to save a helpless kitten.

Spending a Quiet Christmas with our Pets This Year

Wednesday, December 23, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

This pandemic has altered all of our lives this year including the celebrations that we always look forward to. Usually at Christmas time we have a holiday party and always have friends over. This year , my partner Jim is working in the afternoon at a nearby hotel and I will be spending the afternoon with my two cats Millie and Atlantis and our little guest Conure Emro who is spending a few weeks with us before he goes back to his home in the hotel lobby. So how do I still have the Christmas spirit considering this day will be unlike any other holiday?  Here’s how. I mentally prepared myself for very quiet holidays this year. I’ll be doing my part to keep myself as well as family and friends safe from this raging virus.  I’ve also decorated the house and created a festive environment like any other year. This year, I’ll cook a complete Christmas dinner as usual consisting of spinach and mushroom lasagna and a pork roast. The Christmas spirit is here although the people are not.

On Christmas Day, I’ll cook, listen to Christmas music, open presents with my partner Jim in the morning before he goes to work and watch some holiday movies in the afternoon. Our beloved pets will keep me company and we will all get through. It’s a “Hard Candy Christmas” but hopefully we can all look forward to better days in 2021.

The spirit of love and the memories that Christmas brings  is always alive. It’s up to us to let it in. Enjoy your time with your beloved pets this year, stay safe and let your Christmas spirit shine.

Happy Holidays from the Pet Product Guru.

Cats and Real Christmas Trees

Sunday, December 20, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

If you have cats, there’s always some concern about how they will behave around your Christmas tree. I always have to watch mine as they play and sleep under the tree. Some cats chew the pine needles on the tree. Did you know that real trees are more dangerous to cats than artificial ones? This is because the needles on a real tree are sharp and can pierce or puncture the skin of an overly curious cat, while the pine needles themselves are irritating to mildly toxic if chewed (depending on the species of tree used). Chewing an artificial tree is not healthy for your cat either. You should discourage your cat from going near a real tree. A small tree is a safer solution if you have a super curious kitten. These is less of it to come crashing down and cause potential harm to your kitten and your belongings. If you do choose a real tree, also choose a water container for the tree that is completely inaccessible to the cat. If she tries to drink from it, she risks poisoning. For small kittens, wrap tinfoil around the trunk. They don’t like putting their nails into it and it will keep them from climbing the tree.

Be careful and enjoy your holidays.

Getting Cats With Kidney Disease to Eat

Saturday, December 19, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

This can be a real problem, I used to try everything to get my cat Molly to eat in the last months of her life. She had been battling kidney disease for about five years. I used to try anything to get her to eat and sometimes I would hit the jackpot. I’d find something that she seemed to really like. I can’t stress how important it is to make sure your cat eats regularly but it’s a balancing act. You should also try to keep their phosphorous levels low. Cats are usually put on a prescription diet and given food that is low in phosphorous but unfortunately lots of cats don’t like the food including Molly.

Here’s as except from, Tanya’s kidney disease website that explains some ways to get your cat to eat.

The one essential treatment for all cats is food. Although a therapeutic kidney food can be helpful, if your cat won’t eat it, it’s not helpful at all.

If your cat hasn’t eaten for a couple of days, s/he needs food now. Cats who don’t eat can develop a lifethreatening liver condition called hepatic lipidosis, which can happen after just a day or two of not eating. The site will help you identify possible causes of inappetence and how to treat them, but right now, this minute, if your cat hasn’t eaten today, I want you to stop reading and go and get some food into your cat. Try any cat food you have in the house — at this point, anything is better than nothing.

If your cat won’t eat what you have in stock and you are in the USA, pop out to the supermarket and buy some Gerbers Stage 2 meat-based baby foods and some Fancy Feast Classic pate-style foods. You can check on what you need to buy here and here. If you’re near a pharmacy, also buy some Pepcid AC regular (not Complete or Extra Strength); you want the 10mg size). You are going to ask your vet if you can use the Pepcid AC for your cat.

NOTE: Do not continue use of Pepcid without checking with your vet. I made the mistake of doing this. It depletes essential stomach acid which your cat needs.

I would also recommend strongly that you add Astro’s Oil products to your cats daily diet. I’ve been using these products for many years and the results are truly remarkable! My cat Atlantis has beginning stage kidney disease. He was vomiting, not eating and generally not well about a year ago. I once again added Astro’s Oil. Today his kidney test readings are in a normal range and he has gained weight, is eating well and his coat looks much better. There is a great story behind the development of Astro’s oil. I encourage you to read the story, then try the products. Astro’s Oil is a high potency omega oil. I administer the recommended dosage to Atlantis every morning in a small pipette. It really makes a difference. The website is www.astrosoil.com. You can order directly from this site. After reading the story behind Astro’s Oil, I was convinced that these products would help delay the progress of this devastating disease. It gave me five more years with my beloved cat Molly and now Atlantis has made some great progress!

Feline kidney disease is complex and you may feel overwhelmed, I know I did. I recommend following your Vet’s advice and add Astro’s oil. Most importantly stick to the game plan. If what you’re doing seems to work, stick with it.

Remember, your pets count!

Deadly Feline Distemper

Friday, December 18, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

Feline Panleukopenia virus (FPV), also commonly referred to as feline distemper, is a highly contagious and life-threatening viral disease in the cat population. Many years ago, I adopted a young kitten from one of the animal shelters in North Jersey. I was very young and didn’t think to ask if the kitten had been vaccinated. Being so young, I never thought that anything could be wrong with the kitten. I took him home and the next day noticed that he was listless. He then began vomiting  and developed severe diarrhea. That night, the kitten died. I was devastated!  All shelters should provide the proper vaccinations for all animals but you must always check before adopting any pet. Distemper is deadly as I learned with my little kitten. It doesn’t waste any time. the disease moves very quickly and can kill your kitten in a matter of a few days. This causative virus is very resilient and can survive for years in contaminated environments, so vaccination is the best preventative available. Kittens between the ages of two to six months are at highest risk for developing this severe disease.

Here are all the symptoms to watch out for. This information was provided by Pet Md.

Symptoms and Types

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea/bloody diarrhea
  • Dehydration
  • Weight loss
  • High fever
  • Anemia (due to lowered red blood cells)
  • Rough hair coat
  • Depression
  • Complete loss of interest in food
  • Some cats may hide themselves for a day or two
  • Hanging head over water bowl or food dish but does not drink or eat
  • Feet tucked under body for long periods
  • Chin resting on floor for long periods
  • Neurological symptoms in those cats in which virus attacks brain (e.g., lack of coordination)

Remember, take care of your pets because your pets count!
