Traveling with Your Cat? Here’s What You Need

Thursday, April 29, 2021
posted by Jim Murphy

We normally talk about traveling with your dog. Today we are going to talk about traveling with a cat.

Traveling with a cat is not the same as with a dog. Cats love to hide and will get under anything they can. Having a cat travel in a car without being  placed in a cat carrier is asking for trouble. They can get trapped under the gas pedal or even try to wiggle their way under the dashboard. Cats must be secured in a sturdy cat carrier during a road trip. Here are some supplies that you should keep in your car for the trip.

  • Bottled Water and a no spill bowl.
  • Dry food, a small bowl and treats.
  • Favorite toys
  • A comfortable, familiar blanket
  • A leash, spare collar with ID Tags and a reachable phone number
  • Cat first aid kit
  • Travel litter box. They sell throwaway litter boxes in the supermarket.
  • Non prescription calming medicine such s Rescue Remedy
  • Photo of you cat in case she gets lost
  • Your cats medical records
  • Paper towel rolls and plastic bags

It’s better to be well prepared for any road trip with you cat.

Protecting Your Dogs Heart

Wednesday, April 28, 2021

We need good habits to stay healthy. This also is true for our pets.  Here are some tips that can keep your dog healthy and in shape.

  • Exercise – Dogs need regular exercise regardless of their size or age. Even older dogs need daily exercise to stay healthy, even if it’s just a few brisk walks per day. Exercise routines differ between size, breeds and age. Talk to your vet to find out what kind of exercise is best for your dog.
  • Diet –  A healthy diet is good for your dog’s heart as well as our own hearts.  Your dogs diet needs to be well balance  with high quality ingredients. Again, I recommend that you talk to your vet about which brand would be best for your dog and the amount to feed him.
  • Routine Checkups – Take your dog to the vet at least once a year for an annual checkup. Ask plenty of questions while you’re  there.

Seven tips for protecting your dogs heart.

  1. Keep an eye on your dog as they age. Check his energy levels and get any cough checked out.
  2. Make sure your dog maintains the proper body weight.
  3. Exercise your dog regularly.
  4. Watch for signs of heart disease.
  5. Some breeds may be more prone to heart disease. Know whether or not your breed is prone to heart disease.
  6. If your veterinarian hears a murmur, ask about heart disease.
  7. As mentioned above, take your dog for regular checkups.

Older dogs have special nutritional needs and some of those needs can be given in the form of vitamin supplements. Check with your vet for some recommendations for higher level of vitamins that your dog may need.

A large percentage of older dogs suffer from arthritis. There is a daily supplement that contains glucosamine that helps dogs suffering from arthritis, hip dysplasia, or other bone or joint problems. Make sure that your dog is eating a balanced diet. If he isn’t then vitamin supplement may be required. Again, check with your veterinarian to get the best advice and don’t try to be your dogs doctor.

Dog Germs

Sunday, April 25, 2021
posted by Jim Murphy

Dogs like to have their own dog food bowls, but do you really need more  than one water bowl for more than one dog?  What about the germs in each dog’s mouth?  Just like humans, dogs have a lot of bacteria in their saliva. Lets not call them all germs because many bacteria serve a useful purpose. Bad bacteria usually gets zapped by acid in the dogs stomach when it swallows. Some diseases that dogs pass along are respiratory. Some are transmitted by fecal contaminants. Dogs with healthy immune systems can safely share one water bowl. Just make sure that you keep plenty of water around. Adult dogs are 60% water and it should stay that way.

Status of Atlantis

Saturday, April 24, 2021
posted by Jim Murphy

I just got the results of our cat Atlantis’s test results after his latest visit to the vet last Wednesday. The good news is that his Thyroid has returned to normal. His TT4 count was 2.3. However his SDMA which measures kidney function has gotten a bit worse indicating that Atlantis has beginning stages of Kidney disease. I will continue giving him is daily thyroid medication and Astros Oil but now I’ve added two new treatments developed by the company the makes Astro’s Oil. One is a nitrogen-Creatine Scrub and Renal Care Protein. Both items can improve kidney function. We’ll see if this makes a difference when he goes for his next visit.

Atlantis is eating well and is in good spirits. His vocal expression tells us that he is feeling well and needs the usual attention that is required when owning a Siamese/Himalayan cat.  I also mentioned to the vet that Atlantis hasn’t pooped for about three days. During the examination, he discovered that Atlantis wasn’t constipated at all. In fact, as soon as we got home he pooped and has been pooping ever since. Go figure!

We continue to take good care of our sweet baby who certainly keeps us busy all the time! Have a great weekend!

“Yes” Rather Than “No”

Thursday, April 22, 2021
posted by Jim Murphy

Many puppies and kittens fail to complete learning tasks in the early stages of training. This according to Suzanne Britts, Phd. CAAB, is because they either stopped trying or showed signs of distress such as yelping or engaging in abnormal behaviors. Your puppy or kitten begins life wanting and needing to learn. Don’t suppress the behaviors that you don’t like but rather re-program yourself to reinforce and encourage the ones you do like. Dogs and cats that hear “no” much more than they hear “yes” become afraid to try new behaviors. So if your dog refuses to go upstairs or your cat avoids the new act scratching post that you just bought her, it may be because her willingness to try it was suppressed by so many “no’s” when she was young. When your dog or cat does something that you like, reinforce this behavior with a “yes good boy or girl.” When they really do something that you like, you can always give them a cat treat or dog treat and get them a new dog or cat toy!

Atlantis Going to the Vet Today

Wednesday, April 21, 2021
posted by Jim Murphy

Our cat Atlantis is and handful when it comes to his health. He is our sweet baby but has several health conditions including Hyperthyroidism and digestive disorders. He has an appointment with the Vet today to check his thyroid. We recently increased his thyroid medication and we must check if his Thyroid function is back to normal, is still to fast or has slowed down too much. I’ve also added another issue, he has not pooped for almost three days. Although he doesn’t seem like he’s struggling to do so and is drinking and eating fairly normally, we need to get to the bottom of this. In contrast, our younger cat Millie who’s about the same age as Atlantis has no issues. She still flies around the house like a kitten.

I will provide you with a status update after Atlantis’s appointment today.

We must do the best to care for our beloved pets and put forth every effort to keep them happy and healthy!

Vaccinate Your New Puppy as Soon as Possible

Tuesday, April 20, 2021
posted by Jim Murphy

As soon as you get your puppy, you should consider getting him vaccinated. He first vaccinations will help him build up immunity to disease. What shots should your puppy get? Most dogs receive the rabies shot as well as combination vaccine called DHLPP. It’s administered as a series of shots and will guard your pup against diseases like distemper, hepatitis, leptosporosis, parainfluenza, and parvo virus. In order to keep his immunity up, your dog will probably get these shots for the rest of his life. Always talk to your veterinarian about what is best for your pet. Your vet may recommend that your adult dog get vaccinated less frequently. Depending on where you live or when you are planning on going with your dog, he may also need to be vaccinated against kennel cough, corona, lyme disease or giardia.

In addition to his vaccinations, make sure your pup is given the proper food and lots of exercise and play time. He should have a dog crate, dog water bowl and lots of dog toys to play with.

Ways to Prevent Dog Separation Anxiety

Monday, April 19, 2021
posted by Jim Murphy

I’m sure that you’ve had this experience if you own a dog and don’t keep him in is dog carrier or dog crate while you’re gone. You come home to find your dog at the window barking up a storm! When your dog is home alone and starts barking, he could be barking a things outside or he may be just upset because you’re gone. Victoria Voight,an Animal Behavorist in Pomona, California suggests that you turn on a thirty minute tape when you leave the house and then listen to the tape when you get back. She says that if you hear the dog start walking around and whining and barking or knocking things over, he probably has separation anxiety. Dogs have to be acclimated slowly to being alone. Start by leaving for only a minute or two then gradually work your way toward longer intervals. Leave his favorite dog toys around. If the problem doesn’t get better seek professional help.
