Is Your Cat Obese?

Tuesday, September 22, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

Obesity is a very common problem in pets. Obesity develops when energy intake exceeds energy requirements. The excess energy is then stored as fat. Once a pet is obese, she may remain obese even after excessive caloric intake stops. The majority of cases of obesity are related to simple overfeeding coupled with lack of exercise.

Some cats like to chase their cat toys around which gives them plenty of exercise and keeps them from gaining weight. My older cat, Mollie never liked playing. She won’t chase her toys or run around for exercise. As a result, she’s overweight.

Normally, a short haired house cat should weight between 7 and 10 pounds. Once a cat is overweight, you must take some steps to help her shed the extra pounds which will keep her more healthy. You should play with your cat 30 to 40 minutes a day. If your cat is like my older cat and doesn’t like to play, concentrate on her diet. I always buy dried food for indoor cats. Make sure it’s has all the required ingredients, lots of protein and vegetables. This food has less calories then other dried foods. Also limit the amount of treats that you give your cat. Cat treats are high in calories. Just give her less you don’t have to stop giving her treats altogether.

A dog thundershirt is designed to help prevent anxiety in your dog. When it comes to switching pets foods, gradual, proportional change  over time will be fine with a finicky cat but dogs are different. Most dogs will eat basically anything that lands in their bowl.  That kind of appetite doesn’t mean that a sudden change of diet isn’t a shock to the dog’s system. Indigestion, diarrhea and worse can result from  abrupt changes in diet. If your veterinarian has advised you to change your dogs food, do it gradually.  your veterinarian might recommend feeding a ratio of 50/50 old or new food at first.  then one third old food and two thirds new food for awhile. This will be easier on your dog’s digestive system and the transition will be smoother.

Parvovirus Requires Immediate Attention

Saturday, September 19, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

This is a viral disease that is common in dogs. Puppies are more likely to have problems with Parvovirus but is also occurs in adults. There is a high rate of survival only with immediate intervention by a veterinarian. If you don’t get medical help right away, chances are your dog will die. Parvovirus is spread from one dog to another and there is no cure for it.  Most times, it is treated by re-hydrating the dog or puppy, and by prescribing antibiotics.  Your veterinarian may also make your dog more comfortable by treating the symptoms.

The most common sign of this dog illness is diarrhea. Your puppy may appear tired, listless and not interested in eating. This virus enjoys rapidly growing cells and that is why  the digestive system and the cardiovascular system are often problem spots for puppies.  If your dogs diarrhea does not go away right away and you did not change his diet in any way, take him to a vet  right away.

Your Cats Sounds

Friday, September 18, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

Our feline friends can make a wide variety of sounds ranging from purrs, to chirps, to hisses and even growls. If you hear your cat chirping, they are probably sitting on the window sill looking at the birds. This sound is reserved to attract birds. If you hear a calming purr, this probably means that your cat is comfortable and content. A cat can also purr when it’s sick. The most common sound is the “meow” which could mean anything from saying “hello” to being hungry. Our Siamese, Himilayan cat, Atlantis is a real “talker” he has such a large variety of “meows” that it’s almost a language of it’s own.

Here’s what the Insider says about cat meows.

In the wild, kittens meow when they’re cold or hungry to get the mother cat’s attention, as explained by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Generally, though, adult cats don’t meow much to one another.

On the other hand, adult cats meow to communicate with humans pretty frequently. In fact, cats meow at people to say hello, ask for attention, or demand food, as further noted by the ASPCA.

Chances are, cat guardians will learn to distinguish an individual cat’s meows. There’s a difference between the plaintive, high-pitched cry for food, and the bright, chirpy sound they make as a greeting.

Some Pets have Different Colored Eyes

Wednesday, September 16, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

Pets with one blue eye and one brown eye is called complete heterochromia. It’s the way the pigment melanin is distributed in an animals’ skin and hair. A dog or cat that has complete heterochromia has a white area of skin and hair around it’s eye where there’s little or no melanin. The result is one blue eye.  Plenty of melanin is concentrated in the other eye which is a different color.  The reason for this is unclear. Complete heterochromia is seen quite often in cats, horses and other animals. Partial heterochromia where the iris of the eye is two different colors is much more unusual.  Why this occurs is not clearly understood. It is believed to be inherited in most cases.

The Kitty Diner

Tuesday, September 15, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

We have two cats who have us wrapped around their paws. Our cat Atlantis is a beautiful Siamese/Himilayan and Millie is a sweet short haired cat. Both are about 15 years old. Atlantis came with a number of conditions like hyperthyroidism, beginning stage kidney disease and some gastrointestinal issues. I’ve been giving him a variety of high quality foods to see which are best for his sensitive digestive system. The problem is that he expects to be fed whenever he wants. Being that he’s used to a diet that has lots of variety, he sometimes decides that he doesn’t like a certain flavor anymore. I usually offer him another which better fits his preference. This has caused a demanding, fussy kitty. Every time I get up and go into the kitchen, he follows me expecting to be offered another selection from the “kitty diner.” His meows are almost comical! I usually give in and give him another pack of his favorite food. He is truly a spoiled kitty with a very good appetite. Every few days, I make another trip to the pet store to stock up on his favorite foods and treats. He is definitely breaking my bank! In our house, the kitties rule!

High Quality Diets are Essential for Pets

Sunday, September 13, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

Many Veterinary professionals believe that a high quality diet can transform an ordinary coat on a dog or cat into soft, luxurious coat. If you notice changes in your pets coat, you might want to consider what he’s eating. Essential nutrients that directly influence skin and coat condition include protein, fat, vitamins and minerals. High quality pets food will generally contain the proper balance of animal  and plant fat plus the vitamins and minerals needed to keep your pets coat silky and shiny. However, protein deficiency and cause dry, flaky skin and a dull looking coat. If you’re concerned about your pet, talk to your veterinarian about his diet.

Dogs Sharing a Water Bowl

Saturday, September 12, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

Dogs like to have their own dog food bowls, but do you really need more  than one water bowl for more than one dog?  What about the germs in each dog’s mouth?  Just like humans, dogs have a lot of bacteria in their saliva. Lets not call them all germs because many bacteria serve a useful purpose. Bad bacteria usually gets zapped by acid in the dogs stomach when it swallows. Some diseases that dogs pass along are respiratory. Some are transmitted by fecal contaminants. Dogs with healthy immune systems can safely share one water bowl. Just make sure that you keep plenty of water around. Adult dogs are 60% water and it should stay that way.

Remember, your pets count!

Controlling Your Dog When He Spots Another Dog

Thursday, September 10, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

It can be very stressful when your dog sees another dog while you’re waling him and reacts with aggression. It sounds like the dogs are going to kill each other. There are some things that you may try to keep this problem at bay. Continue practicing “sit” and “stay” commands in a controlled environment. Keep her on  a leash so that you have complete control of her when she disobeys the commands. She can feel your tension so you need to be relaxed and calm.   Knowing someone who has a calm dog that can help train your dog with you is always helpful. Their dog needs to be on a leash as well. Just have them sit far enough away so that the other dog is not interested in your dog while you conduct sit and stay drills. Slowly have the dogs cross paths. Use the commands if your dog becomes aggressive. Take along some treats for good behavior. You must have patience and repeat this over and over until your dog seems to calm down.

Make sure that your dog is well socialized. Take her to the park to play with the other dogs frequently. I found that dogs that are not properly socialized with exhibit much more aggression toward others dogs while they are being walked.

You can also try taking her to obedience school. This will take the burden off of you and the situation will be handled by the experts.
