Hypertension in Cats and Dogs

Tuesday, September 29, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

Did you ever think that only humans can get high blood pressure?  Cats and dogs can also suffer from hypertension.  Most of the time, they will never show any obvious signs of the disease.  The ability to recognize and to treat hypertension in dogs and cats is a relatively recent development in veterinary medicine.  Treatment for a pet with high blood pressure may include a low salt diet and pet medication to lower their blood pressure.  It has been found that in pets, hypertension is almost always secondary to some other disorder which may include diabetes, kidney disease or thyroid disease.  The chance of treating the hypertension really increases if you are able to discover and eradicate the underlying disease.

Cats and Birds in the Same House

Monday, September 28, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

Can a cat and a bird live in the same house together? The simple answer to this questions is “yes,” cats and birds can live harmoniously together in the same house.  The owner must take certain measures to ensure the safety of both the cat and the bird.  If  your cat shows an interest in attacking the bird, a quick squirt with a water bottle may discourage him for the moment. You may have to do this a few times before the cat gets the message.  If your bird is aggressive  toward the cat, you must discipline the bird as well. This can be a little difficult. Put the bird back in his cage and cover the cage for awhile. Keep placing the two together for short periods of time and supervise them closely.

Birds are able to catch certain diseases from cats.  Direct contact with the cat’s fur, especially through biting can increase the risk to the bird.  Try to avoid physical contact  between the bird and the cat if at all possible.

With consistent training, both should be able to tolerate each other fairly quickly. Many owners find that the their cat and bird actually enjoy each other’s company but you must always be there to supervise themwhen the bird is out of it’s cage. Be patient and persistent, you may be surprised at the results.

Remember, your pets count.

Cats Can Hide Illness

Sunday, September 27, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

A few days ago, Atlantis was apparently not feeling well. He wasn’t eating and retreated to a corner in the bedroom. Atlantis is a very personal cat. He loves to eat, talk, cuddle and spent the day with us wherever we are in our home. It’s very easy to detect if something is wrong and this particular day, there was. Atlantis was listless and refused to eat. I always get very alarmed since he does have lots of medical issues. I gave it some time and offered him little bits of food and cat broth throughout the day. He began eating and by the end of the day, I noticed an improvement.

Atlantis has a routine appointment with the vet on Oct 7th and I tried to move up his date but of course they had no room for him. I would have taken him to their emergency care if he hadn’t improved.

The next day, I got up and found Atlantis waiting in the kitchen meowing for his food. I was so happy our little boy was over his issue. He is doing fine now, meowing I write this and waiting for another serving of food.

Keep a close eye on your  little furry friends and look for signs that something may not be right. Cats can hide illness pretty well so you much be one step ahead of them.

Doggie Nose Color

Saturday, September 26, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

If notice any changes in your dog’s nose color, there’s probably no need for alarm. A nose that’s normally dark can change color for several reasons.  It may look pink or brown. Sometimes, the season is the reason for the change. The change can occur in the colder months. This is due to pigment loss because of the temperature. Sunburn can also cause a problem. Applying sunscreen can help. Some noses are sensitive to plastic food and water bowls. This can cause contact dermatitis.  Normal color may return if you change the food and water bowls to steel or ceramic. If your dog seems healthy, in every other way, nose color changes are probably not a problem. If there are other symptoms such as a loss of appetite or listlessness, see your veterinarian.

A Roller Coaster Ride with out Pet Atlantis!

Thursday, September 24, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

Atlantis, our sweet Siamese/Himilayan cat has host of medical problems including hyperthyroidism, kidney disease, and digestive problems. Lately, his been pulling his fur out. He has an appointment with the vet on Oct. 7th. Lately to get an appointment for anything is a nightmare!  They can’t take him before that so I would need to go after hours as an emergency. That means I have add another $200 to my bill. Oct. 7th is his regular check up where they’ll do routine blood work an give him an overall health check. I will tell them about his hair pulling at this time.

Yesterday, Atlantis became listless, wouldn’t eat and preferred go stay in a corner in the bedroom all day. I became concerned when he refused his food in the morning. During the day I gave him small portions of broth and blended wet food. He only ate small portions and would only eat if I took the food to him. I figured that today I would have to take him in as an emergency.

Today, with the help of a prayer or two, Atlantis almost seems back to normal. He followed me in the kitchen meowing for his food. He drank lots of water. He still prefers his new spot in the bedroom but that’s ok as long as he’s eating and drinking on his own.  It has certainly been a roller coaster ride with our little friend and we will do anything to make sure that his life happy and comfortable.

Pet owners need to pay close attention to any changes in behavior. Act quickly and do what you have to do get on top of any problems as soon as possible.

A Fall Food For Your Dog

Wednesday, September 23, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

Fall is finally here! Thank goodness cool crisp days and more enjoyable walks with your best friend. I also love the foods of fall, squash and pumpkin will be seen on store shelves. Did you know that canned pumpkin is good for your dog’s diet? The soluble fiber in pumpkin can help with digestive issues, while the antioxidants and essential fatty acids in the seeds promote healthy skin and fur and urinary health. Additional nutrients found in pumpkins, such as beta-carotene and iron, might reduce the likelihood of your pet developing cancer. Try mixing 1-2 teaspoons of canned pumpkin in your dog’s food.

Enjoy Fall and keep you pet healthy by adding some pumpkin to your dogs diet!

Is Your Cat Obese?

Tuesday, September 22, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

Obesity is a very common problem in pets. Obesity develops when energy intake exceeds energy requirements. The excess energy is then stored as fat. Once a pet is obese, she may remain obese even after excessive caloric intake stops. The majority of cases of obesity are related to simple overfeeding coupled with lack of exercise.

Some cats like to chase their cat toys around which gives them plenty of exercise and keeps them from gaining weight. My older cat, Mollie never liked playing. She won’t chase her toys or run around for exercise. As a result, she’s overweight.

Normally, a short haired house cat should weight between 7 and 10 pounds. Once a cat is overweight, you must take some steps to help her shed the extra pounds which will keep her more healthy. You should play with your cat 30 to 40 minutes a day. If your cat is like my older cat and doesn’t like to play, concentrate on her diet. I always buy dried food for indoor cats. Make sure it’s has all the required ingredients, lots of protein and vegetables. This food has less calories then other dried foods. Also limit the amount of treats that you give your cat. Cat treats are high in calories. Just give her less you don’t have to stop giving her treats altogether.

When it comes to switching pets foods, gradual, proportional change  over time will be fine with a finicky cat but dogs are different. Most dogs will eat basically anything that lands in their bowl.  That kind of appetite doesn’t mean that a sudden change of diet isn’t a shock to the dog’s system. Indigestion, diarrhea and worse can result from  abrupt changes in diet. If your veterinarian has advised you to change your dogs food, do it gradually.  your veterinarian might recommend feeding a ratio of 50/50 old or new food at first.  then one third old food and two thirds new food for awhile. This will be easier on your dog’s digestive system and the transition will be smoother.

Parvovirus Requires Immediate Attention

Saturday, September 19, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

This is a viral disease that is common in dogs. Puppies are more likely to have problems with Parvovirus but is also occurs in adults. There is a high rate of survival only with immediate intervention by a veterinarian. If you don’t get medical help right away, chances are your dog will die. Parvovirus is spread from one dog to another and there is no cure for it.  Most times, it is treated by re-hydrating the dog or puppy, and by prescribing antibiotics.  Your veterinarian may also make your dog more comfortable by treating the symptoms.

The most common sign of this dog illness is diarrhea. Your puppy may appear tired, listless and not interested in eating. This virus enjoys rapidly growing cells and that is why  the digestive system and the cardiovascular system are often problem spots for puppies.  If your dogs diarrhea does not go away right away and you did not change his diet in any way, take him to a vet  right away.
