The Right Eating Requirements for Cats

Tuesday, November 30, 2021
posted by Jim Murphy

Cats are meat eaters. They must eat meat that is high in protein and amino acids in order to maintain their health.  So a vegetarian cat is out of the question. Kittens that are less than one year old need food that is especially designed for their system. Their food must be as high in proteins as possible. This is necessary for the development of their muscles and bones.

If you have a dog, you may notice your cat invading his bowl every now and then but remember, a cat does not receive the proper nutrition from dog food products. Keep him away from the dog dish!  Cats should eat only cat food. When choosing a food, cat owners should look for one that contains proteins, fats, minerals, and vitamins. Extra vitamin and mineral supplements are not only unnecessary but potentially harmful.

Cats always eat efficiently. They eat small amounts frequently. This is the reason why I believe that it is necessary to leave their food out for them during the day. My vet doesn’t agree but still, I will stick to my guns on this one. You can’t treat a cat like a dog and that includes his eating requirements. This is the one time that I will not listen to what my vet says. As long as you do not overfeed, keeping your cat’s food out all day is perfectly fine.

Update on Millie

Sunday, November 28, 2021
posted by Jim Murphy

I will always stress the fact that you should always pay attention to your feline friends. Take note of any change in their behavior or physical appearance. Our cat Millie developed what appeared to be an abscess on her jaw. We are taking her to a new vet in Georgetown, Delaware who thought it may originate from her teeth. Her appointment is set for December 1oth but in the meantime, the vet  prescribed antibiotics. The sore has been bleeding periodically but now it seems to be under control and healing well.

Even though the antibiotics are working and Millie’s sore is improving by the day, she will still go to her appointment on Dec. 10th. It’s important for her to be examined by this new vet and if her teeth are causing the problem, they need to be attended to.

Keep your pets healthy and have them check regularly by you vet!

Tips for a Good Cat Photograph

Saturday, November 27, 2021
posted by Jim Murphy

Cats can be difficult to photograph. As soon as they notice the camera, they may dart under the bed, sofa or into another room.  Here are some tips that may help.

  1. Give her a treat  but don’t expect her to pose after just one treat. Give her a treat and keep some treats in your hand. Once she realized that you are giving her “free” treats, keep them near the camera and start photographing her.
  2. Set up some obstacles that you know that your cat can’t resist like some unrolled toilet paper, a card board box or an open window.  Just open the window a crack or maybe put some open treats on the counter. As soon as you have her attention, you can start taking the pictures.
  3. Put out some colorful blankets. Cats love anything new and will quickly go near the blankets and maybe even lie down so you can get a few good shots.
  4. Catch her in action. Have someone play with her with her favorite toy and take a bunch of pictures.

Some things that you shouldn’t do is use a flash. Give her a break after taking a few photos, be creative and patient and I’m sure that you will get some great pictures!

That Extra Sense that Dogs Seem to Have

Friday, November 26, 2021
posted by Jim Murphy

We’ve always heard stories about dogs warning their owners about fires in the house or some other event they may pose a danger to their owner. In the 1980’s I had a dog who started jumping on me at 5:00 am on a Saturday morning. I got ready to take him out, but realized that he didn’t want to go and ran back upstairs to the bedroom. I got back in bed and he began to jump and bark again. A few seconds after that, I felt a vibration and heard a rumble which lasted only for a few seconds. Since I don’t live in an earthquake prone area, I thought it was some kind of explosion. Later that morning, I turned on the radio and heard that there had been a small earthquake up in Westchester county N.Y. that could be felt in parts of northern New Jersey. I knew immediately that my dog sensed this when he jumped on me and barked earlier that morning.

I believe this is one of the most endearing things we love about owning a dog, because a dog’s sixth sense is often much better than a human’s. This most likely is genetically encoded in modern domesticated dogs and has been passed down for their ancestors—wild wolves who needed all their instincts to survive in the wild.

Millie’s Medical Problem

Thursday, November 25, 2021
posted by Jim Murphy

Several weeks ago we noticed that Millie’s left jaw was swollen. We didn’t feel a lump but felt a thickening of the skin. This situation put us in a difficult position since we are in the process of switching vets. We haven’t decided on a new vet yet so there was nowhere to take her. When we finally made the decision to take her to a vet in Georgetown, Delaware, there was a long wait to get her an appointment. One thing about southern Delaware, vets aren’t easy to come by.  We made an appointment for early January. As her condition seemed to worsen, we called our new vet and he felt that the problem was with her teeth. He agreed to do a procedure that required her to be put on anesthesia on an emergency basis. We made the appointment that was scheduled to take place last week. As the days went by, Millie’s swelling had gone down and she was back to normal. We contacted the vet and re-scheduled her appointment back to early January.

All of a sudden Millie’s swelling came back and now there was an open sore that was beginning to bleed. We contacted our new vet again and he agreed to administer antibiotics to alleviate infection. Her appointment was now moved to December 10th.

In the meantime, we’re continuing to clean her sore a couple of times a day and are giving her the required dose of antibiotics. Other than the sore, Millie seems to be doing fine. We are closely monitoring this situation and we WON’T cancel her appointment that is scheduled for December 10th this time!

Pay close attention to any changes in your cat especially if they are older. Cats are clever and have a tendency to hide their illness. In the meantime have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving Safety is a Must for Our Pets

Wednesday, November 24, 2021
posted by Jim Murphy

It’s Thanksgiving day and there will be guests and lots of food. It’s important that you remember to remind your guests not to give the begging pooch any table scraps. Dogs could choke on bones and cats can get very sick if they are given any chocolate. If your dog is a “jumper,” it will be a good idea to keep him in a separate room while the guests are arriving.  Make sure to keep your dog away from the door. He may dart out in all of the excitement. Keep these simple things in mind and you’re sure to have a great day.  Happy Thanksgiving!

The Raising of a Cat’s Butt

Tuesday, November 23, 2021
posted by Jim Murphy

You pet your cat on his back and he raises his butt. Why does he do this? This is sometimes called “elevator butt.” You push the right button and up goes the butt. Kittens raise this tail and back end for their mothers to inspect and clean them. This stimulation which began early in life is  both functional and pleasurable. So don’t worry about your cat “mooning” you, he’s just telling you that you are worthy of  scratching this sensitive area on him and that it actually feels very good to him.

Vitamins to Keep Your Pets Kidney’s Healthy

Sunday, November 21, 2021
posted by Jim Murphy

Kidney disease is a serious health problem for cats and dogs. Giving your pet supplements may help ward off real problems.  Omega 3 fatty acids are the best for protecting your pets against kidney disease.  They are found in capsule form over the counter.  Omega 3 reduces kidney inflammation. Some veterinarians also recommend vitamin E which works together with Omega 3, vitamin B, Vitamin C and potassium. Before starting any new supplement regiment, talk to your veterinarian and ask about the proper dosage for your pet. Remember that no supplement will make up for poor quality nutrition. Feed your pet a high quality, age appropriate diet.

Things to Consider When Searching for a Vet

Saturday, November 20, 2021
posted by Jim Murphy

A veterinarian is your pets second best friend. Remember, the worst time to look for a vet is when you really need one. A veterinarian should also have good people skills. Usually a veterinarian works with a team of professionals so you would want to evaluate the teams competence and caring. You also must make sure that their fees are within your budget. The best way to find a good veterinarian is by starting with a recommendation from a friend, neighbor, groomer or animal shelter worker. Check the yellow pages under “veterinarians” or “Animal Hospitals,” you may be able to find important information about the hours, services and staff. Some veterinarian hospitals are members of the American Animal Hospital Association which signifies that the hospital has pursued and met the AAHA’s standards in areas such as quality care, facilities and equipment. Before choosing a vet, ask yourself these important questions:

1. Is the facility clean and comfortable?

2. Are there technicians and other staff members on hand?

3. How many veterinarians are in the practice?

4. Are appointments required?

5. Do they provided emergency round the clock service?

6. Is the staff caring, calm, competent and courteous?

7. Do they communicate effectively?

8. Do the veterinarians have special interests such as geriatrics?

9. Are X Rays, endoscopy, ultrasound and other tests done in house?

Choose a vet early on in your pets life. Make sure you are comfortable that you’ve made the right decision.

Gum Disease in Dogs

Friday, November 19, 2021
posted by Jim Murphy

Dogs can get gum disease just as humans can.  The best way that you can prevent it is by brushing your dog’s teeth. Cats and dogs both get plac  which causes gum disease. The good news is that the disease tends to develop on the outside of their teeth. Dr Tom Kline is a veterinarian who practices pet dentistry near Columbus Ohio. He says to put the brush inside the lips on the outside of the teeth. Make sure that you use a toothpaste made especially for pets. Your dog or cat will enjoy the taste as they come in various flavors such as beef or chicken. Brush gently back and forth. This will be enough to remove the plac and prevent it from coming back. Your dogs tongue may try to snatch some of the meat flavored tooth paste.  Use these preventative measures and you will eliminate having to treat gum disease with pet medication or other means.
