Medical Problems For Overweight Dogs

Friday, December 30, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

dogoverweightExcess weight is a heavy burdon for any pet to bare. When your dog becomes obese, additional stress is placed on his heart , lungs and joints. Make sure that you monitor your dogs weight. I’m sure you can’t give him a command to stand on the scale but you cat notice when that dog coat gets a bit more difficult to get on him. Run you hand along your dogs’ side as if you were petting him. Pressing gently, you should be able to count your dogs ribs as you run your hand over them. Then look at your dog objectively. When viewed from above, does his body angle in in front of his hips or has he lost his waste? If these simple tests make you suspect that your dog is getting to be a little too porky, take him to the vet for a proper examination and discuss the proper diet changes.

I have two cats and one is a bit overweight which is my fault because I do spoil her. I need to reduce her weight so I’m feeding her food for less active indoor cats and cutting back on her snacks. I’m sure that your vet will give you the proper advice for your dog.

Three Special Gifts

treefood-jogThis has been a special year for my partner and I. We achieved our goal of starting a new life in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware where life is much less stressful and we get to be near the beautiful beaches and bays. My partner Jim, got a job at one of the nicest hotels here and I’m working for the school district as a substitute. Another goal was to semi re-tire and slow down. I’m still running my online radio stations and my pet blog.fondmem

This year we spent the Christmas holiday at home. In the midst of all of the commercialism, we were able to avoid the horrendous traffic jams in northern NJ and quietly do our shopping at the outlets here in Rehoboth. But Christmas isn’t about the physical gifts we get. I had one of the nicest holidays in a long time not because of anything physical. A very dear friend came down and spent the holiday with us. We were able to catch up, shop and cook lots of goodies for the holiday. We had wonderful neighbors/friends over for a delicious Christmas dinner and the last special gift was that I got to spend another Christmas with my cat Molly.  As you know Molly was diagnosed with advanced kidney disease and hyperthyroidism. She’s 17 1/2 years old and last year I wasn’t sure if she would be around another year. I’m glad that I am able to keep her going by making sure she takes her medicine, feeding her a special diet and watching her closely.  I am  so very grateful for these wonderful people and pets that made my holiday extra special this year!

So grateful to have my little Molly with me again this year!

Greedy Medical Industry also Affects Our Pets

catmedI’m giving my cat Molly a prescription medication for her hyperthyroid condition. Two weeks ago, I went to renew her prescription and was told that Molly has no prescription renewals left. They wanted to see her before renewing the prescription. I told them that this medicine if vital to her well being and she needs to have it. Anyone who knows me, knows that I would never leave it at that that. They weren’t getting away with not renewing Molly’s prescription because they wanted me to schedule an appointment and make another $350! I needed the her meds now and I was going to get them. I ranted and raved and let everyone in the waiting room hear me. They finally agreed to renew her prescription if I agreed to take her in for blood tests within the next couple of months. I agreed and will take Molly in but don’t want her poked and prodded at this point.   Sometimes we need to do what we need to do for the benefit of our pets!

Dogs and Arthritis

Wednesday, December 21, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

dogvet6At least 20% of dogs will develop arthritic pain by the time that they reach seven years of age. Dr. William Fortney, a Veterinarian at Kansas State University says that arthiris is a progressive degeneration of the cartilidge, bones and the lining in a joint. That joint can be elbows, knees, hips or even the spine. If you have an older dog that might be in pain, try to keep his weight down and talk to your Veterinarian about pet medication. There are pain relievers for dogs and cats which will help ease the pain of arthritis. If your dog has trouble going up or down stairs or is sluggish, it is a good idea to get him checked for arthritis. Don’t try to make him walk faster or pull him while he is out on his walk. Remember, you pets cannot tell you when they are in pain. Look for signs and react accordingly.

Sneaky Molly

pillpocketsCats are intelligent animals and if there’s a way to get their way, they will find it. I’ve been giving Molly one pill a day for her hyperthyroidism. I’ve been using greenies pill pockets to hide the pill. Molly loves the greenies and has been taking her pill with ease everyday. I recently noticed her pills on the floor. Molly has now discovered that there’s a pill inside that tasty little treat. Now giving her pill is not an easy process. She knows that the pill is inside the little treat and will carefully eat around the pill and leave the it lying on the floor. Last night I had a difficult time getting her to take her pill! I talked to her, pet her then raised my voice. Finally, I said “forget it.” I went back about an hour later, put a little water on the pill pocket and gave her the pill once again. This time she did eat it. I had to stand there and encourage her till she ate the whole thing.  We’ll go through anything we need to for the sake of our pets!

Remember Your Pets During the Holidays

Saturday, December 17, 2016

petgiftThere are millions of Americans hitting the malls today. 62 percent of U.S. households have a pet and for most of these pets, life is quite good.Pets in the United States get to see Santa — along with dermatologists, physical therapists and even pet sitters. People and pets are living longer and the pet industry will make millions of dollars this holiday season. There are so many pet items to choose from for the holidays from the trendy, expensive scratching posts, dog coats and sweaters and dog carriers to the inexpensive chews and throw toys. I always make sure that both of my cats get their catnip toys every holiday. They even have a toy box. Even though I always put their toys back in the box, before you know it, I find them all over the house. This goes to show that our pets love their toys so make sure that you make it a happy holiday for them too!

P.S. I don’t envy all of those millions of people fighting traffic and crowds at the mall today. That’s why I moved to southern Delaware.

dogbasketIt’s been a pleasure writing about “our little friends” and we intend to keep the information coming to you in 2017. Have a great holiday and make sure that you keep your pets safe during this time. Make sure that they don’t get into any holiday treats that they shouldn’t have. You don’t have to lock them up just make sure that they are supervised closely during the holiday festivities. After all they are also a part of your family.

There are also thousands of unwanted dogs and cats spending their holiday in shelters. They are anxiously waiting to be adopted into a loving household. If it’s in your heart to give one of these little guys a second chance, please do so. It return, they will provide you with many years of unconditional love and affection.

Another Scare with Molly’s Health

Another health scare with Molly!

Another health scare with Molly!

My 17 and a half year old cat Molly has kidney disease and a thyroid condition. I’ve been carefully monitoring her health and making sure that she is comfortable and is not in any pain. She has been doing quite well lately but today she gave me a real scare. I’m not working today, so decided to sleep a little later than I normally do. She jumped on the bed about 7:30am to try and coax me into getting up. I then heard some noise in the corner of the room. I know that Molly is territorial and doesn’t like my other cat Millie invading her territory so I figured that they were at it again. I got up and found Molly lying down in a funny position. I picked her up and she flopped back down. I tried to get her to walk and she wobbled and flopped back down. Of course, my heart dropped into my stomach. I picked her up and rubbed her hind legs. I then put her back down and she began walking slowly. Within minutes she was chasing Millie down the hallway. I have no idea what happened but she is ok now. I take Molly’s condition one day at a time. Right now, I’m just glad that she bounced back!

How Cats Show Love

Saturday, December 10, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

cataffectionCats do show love for their owners only they do it differently than dogs do. Yes, cats are independent creatures so they will probably not come to greet you when you come home. My cat Molly is with me all the time. Right now she is snuggle next to me on the chair while I write this. The following information provided by The Nest.com shows the different ways that a cat show is love and affection for his owner.

Felines have their own unique means of expressing affection. The face rub, for example, is a grand romantic gesture in feline terms. Your pet has scent glands on his cheek and when he caresses your face with his, he’s telling you that you belong to him and are a cherished part of his family. The feline kiss, bestowed via a leisurely blink, is Tinker’s way of telling you that he loves and appreciates you. People often express their love for their kitties in a more traditionally human romantic way.
