We all enjoy music, why shouldn’t our pets. Certain types of music can provide a soothing experience for your pets. The positive effects of these soothing sounds are confirmed by both animal psychologists and pet owners. The sound of the harp can be exceptionally relaxing for your pets. There are several artists that provide these recordings for your pets. One is Aliana Boone. She says that the harp is considered to be one of the most healing instruments next to the human voice. Boone conducted a study of her own.  She performed for hospitalized canines at the Florida Veterinary clinic. The hour long performances immediately began to the dogs heart rate, anxiety and respiration.

If your dog or cat is stressed because of a particular situation or maybe, they are high strung by nature, try soothing harp music. If it doesn’t calm them down right away, it will certainly calm you.

This is also a good way to calm your dog down after some vigorous exercise. They will be all wound up after fetching their favorite dog toy, so calm them down with some relaxing music!

Dogs have an incredible sense of hearing. Their hearing is almost as sensitive as their sense of smell. They can hear frequencies  from 60 to 60,000 hertz. Normal sounds that we hear are not louder for dogs. While moving around the house, dogs can not only hear the slightest noise but they can also pinpoint where it’s coming from. They can discriminate against different sounds and determine which sounds are threatening.

Research proved that dogs can identify difference in the engine sound generated by their owner’s car to that of the same model of other cars. Even in the kitchen, a dog can hear a noise and know whether that noise is associated with  his eating time. The slightest sound of the leash will determine whether it’s time for a walk or play.

Dogs memorize sounds and associate them with actions that will follow. These are only a few examples of a dogs incredible sense of hearing. Hearing is the second most dominate sense for a dog. Hearing varies from breed to breed. It’s believed that if a dog has long, droopy ears, it does not hear as well as a dog with it’s ears straight up like a German Shepherd.

As pet lovers, we have to expect the unexpected. Over a year ago, our neighbors moved and left their cat Henry behind. Henry spent most of his life outdoors but leaving him behind, really disturbed me.  After they moved, we didn’t see Henry anymore and I always wondered what happened to him. There were always “Henry sightings” but no actual proof that these sights were actually Henry, until now.

Yesterday, when I looked out on our porch, low and behold, there was Henry sitting under our table. I went to call him, he looked but ran away. Remember, feral cats always have their guard up. Today, I looked out on the porch and there was Henry again, this time sleeping peacefully under our table. I quietly opened the door but again Henry left. This time he stood at the bottom of the porch stairs and looked at me as I called his name.

I decided that if Henry is taking refuge on our porch, he should have some food and water. I left a bowl and food and fresh water for him in case he gets hungry.

Henry may have lost his home but at least we can do what we can to protect him and provide him some shelter and food.

Cleaning your dogs ears should only be done if your dog does not have an infection in them. If he does, wait for it to heal before attempting to clean them. Some things you will need is an ear cleaner for dogs. Most pet suppliers will carry herbal ear cleaners if you are more comfortable using this type of product. You’ll also need cotton pads. The circular kind used for removing makeup are the best. Now, you will need patience. Make sure that you do this at a time when you are not rushing somewhere. If your dog is not used to getting his ears cleaned, I would recommend that you give him an ear massage first. Gently squirt some ear cleaning in his ear before massaging. Now, you must be patient. Some dogs hate this and will run away when you squirt the cleaner in their ears for the first time. Gently use the pad of your fingertips around the edge of his ear until he relaxes for you. Your dog can now associate touching his ears with a relaxing experience. As he relaxes, you can go further into the ear. Look at the curves and grooves in the ears to see how dirty his ears are. Just keep your fingers on the areas that you can see.

Take the pad and soak it with the ear cleaning solution. Once the pad is ready, gently slide it in your dogs ear until it stops. Once the pad is in the ear canal, fold the ear down and gently massage the area surrounding the pad. Rub the ear back and forth as best you can. If you do this right, your dog will probably love you for it!

Take the pad out and use it to swab the rest of the ear.

It’s been accepted practice for many years to elevate the food bowls of large breed dogs such as Great Danes or St. Bernard’s because they’re susceptible to a potentially life threatening condition called “bloat.” It’s brought on by too much air in the stomach. The body cannot expel this excess air. The reason for this condition is unknown. Recent research has revealed that a raised food bowl does little to prevent bloat and may even increase your dogs chances of developing it. Elevated food bowls may still be useful for some pets. Eating out of a raised bowl can reduce the stress on the necks and backs of Greyhounds and other big legged dogs. It’s also a lot easier on dogs that have arthritis.

You notice that your dog has your neighbors dog pinned to the ground. You took him over there for a pleasant visit but now you’re becoming a bit concerned. You also notice that both dogs are snarling. Sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference between playing dogs and fighting dogs. Did you notice whether or not your dog faced your neighbors dog, crouched down with his four limbs nearly touching the ground, and was his rear raised in the air? Was his tail low, making short sweeps? If this is the case, play was on his mind. These fake brawls socialize dogs and teach them to inhibit their bites so they don’t cause injury. But if your dogs tail was high and upright, he’s displaying dominance. If your neighbors dog is trying to get away, and the snarling sounds scary, it might be a fight. Breaking up a fight can be dangerous. You should allow your neighbor’s dog to become submissive to end the action.

If your dog is aggressive toward other pets, it’s a good idea to keep him on his dog leash when visiting. Remember, your pets count!

As you know, I am an animal lover and will do anything to protect animals that are in danger. I am still sitting here feeling very guilty about what happened yesterday. I went outside to throw the garbage out when I decided to check our propane tanks. As I lifted the cover, I noticed what looked like a bunch of hey stuck near the meters  on top of the tank. Without thinking I removed the hay and a small bird flew out. I just realized that I had a birds nest with three tiny eggs inside in my hands. I was very upset. The tanks are scheduled to be refilled any day and the nest would have been distorted anyway, so I gently placed the nest in the thick bushes behind my house. I heard the screams of the mother who was nearby as I completed this despicable act! I felt like a heel!! The screaming finally stopped and I’m hoping that the mother bird is content in her new surroundings inside the nest caring for the eggs. Lesson learned, don’t be so impulsive!

If you have a cat that you let outdoors, you may wonder where they go and what do they do while they’re outside. Kittycam technology revealed just how much wildlife our sweet, little house cats kill. Yes they are pretty murderous creatures! It was surprising to find out that 30% of outdoor cats capture and kill prey, with an average of 2.1 kills a week — and that owners see less than one-quarter of the kills their cats make. It is very interesting to see how deadly house cats can be to wildlife. So when you cat is out wondering around, you can now visualize him hunting and killing prey (not the most pleasant thoughts). Both of my cats stay indoors so I will never receive a dead something or other as a present at my doorstep.
