His owner did all of the right things. He had flyers placed in the community and surrounding area. He used social media to try to locate the dog and he had people searching every nook and cranny in the area. Luckily three weeks later Dutchboy was found. Quick Training Tips for Dogs
Teaching your dog to follow commands is extremely important. Dogs need to be able to react to commands to keep them safe and sound. Here are a few quick tips to help with training.
1. Try to find out what your dog is good at. If he likes to jump or fetch, try to incorporate that into his training.
2. Teach your dog basic obedience first. Don’t try anything too complicated. Keep it as simple as possible.
3. Find a good, healthy treat that your dog enjoys.
4. Make the training sessions fairly short. Five to ten minutes should be fine. You can do a lot of repetitions is a short amount of time.
5. Don’t work on only one trick. Mix it up and do four to eight tricks at once.
6. Keep the training fun. Don’t make it a chore. May sure that both you and your dog enjoy it.
Remember, your pets count!

Cats Miss Their Owners Just Like Dogs
My partner recently had serious open heart surgery. The hospital that he was in was 84 miles from our home. During the time he was there, I drove the 84 miles each day so I could be with him during this difficult time. I left at about 9:00am each day and returned about 7:00pm. During these days our cat Millie was alone. Her daily routine was disrupted. Even though she was comfortable in her home, she was alone all day. She is also very close to my partner, Jim and always looks forward to his attentions and pets. Several days went by and I didn’t notice much of a change in her behavior but after about three days, I noticed her walking from room to room, meowing and staying in strange places like corners and places that she never sleeps. I came home one day and found her lying in the laundry room. This was clearly bizarre behavior for her. I ruled out sickness since she was eating, drinking, peeing and pooping normally.
Last Friday, Jim came home from the hospital. As soon as he walked in the door Millie seemed very happy. She meowed and immediately returned to her normal habits. She is now in her normal spot with us in the family room. All is well.
So if anyone tries to tell you that cats don’t miss their owners or will be fine if left alone, think again. They do feel the affect of change in their lives, they just show it differently than dogs do.

Dogs That Prefer a “Laid Back” Life
Some dogs don’t have much interest in high end activities such as running, racing or playing frisby. They prefer a laid back life style and require only a 20 minute walk twice a day. There are some breeds that fall into this category. Among them are the Bulldog, Shih Tzu, St Bernard and Pekingese. Dogs that are couch potato’s range in size from very large to petite. Despite the fact that they love to stay in their dog beds and rest, they are not pushovers! They can be uncooperative, stubborn and quick to take an assertive role in the absence of a human. They do like their long naps but they also need guidance, discipline and regular exercise.

The Best Time to Take Your Dog to the Beach
If you live near the beach and own a dog, I’m sure that you take your dog to the beach every now and then to toss around some a frisbee or a ball for fun and exercise. There are some dog breeds that have a particular love for surf and sand.
The Springer Spaniel is very loyal and even tempered and they crave regular exercise of any kind but they really love swimming. If you are near the shore take this guy to the shore as often as you can.
Golden Retrievers are on the larger side, easy to train, very faithful and love the water or to fetch on the beach. Take him to the beach and bring along lots of toys and if it’s Summer, take someT The weather is beautiful, and the tourists and beach restrictions are gone.
Enjoy the Fall on the beach with your best friend!

Giving Medicine to Your Pet
We are only as valuable as our health is good – a statement that’s true for both people and pets. And just like people, pets need certain medicines too to stay healthy. Heart worm pills and flee collars are just the beginning when it comes to keeping your pet safe form infection and disease. And to keep your pet out of the vet’s office, where the bills are usually high and the tails are tucked, you’ll have to make sure your loved one is receiving the proper care – and that means meds.
One of the oldest known tricks to get your animal to take their pet medication is to hide the pill in a glob of peanut butter. Your cat or dog is certain to lick every bit right up as they down what they believe to be a tasty treat. Or if you have the time and the proper tools – the back of a spoon works great – you can also crush the pill into a powder and mix it in with some yummy applesauce. I buy a hollow treat and put the pill inside. It works every time. Look for it at your local pet store. They’re call “Greenies” Whichever method you choose, your pet will lead a happy and healthy life!

Questions to Ask When Choosing a Groomer

Veterinarian doctor conducts physical examination of dog oral cavity. Veterinary clinic services concept
- How long have they been in the dog grooming business?
- What kind of training did they receive? Are they certified by NDGAA or another organization?
- Do they specialize in any breed size or particular breed of dog? Are there any restrictions on the types of dogs they work with?
- Do they use a hand held dryer or a cage dryer? (I would prefer a hand held). If they do use a cage dryer, find out if someone always stays with the dogs. If they don’t, I would go elsewhere.
- Do they sedate the dogs for grooming? If so, who does it and what type of training do they have?
- Where do they keep the dogs when they’re not being groomed or waiting to be groomed?
- What happens in an emergency or if your dog is injured? Is there a veterinarian on call or does someone have first aid training?
- How is their record keeping? Do they keep complete records like medical, vaccinations and grooming history?
