Snake Bites to Dogs

Thursday, June 30, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

Summer is here and out come the critters Even though your pet enjoys the outdoors, he may tread on dangerous ground. You decide to take your dog camping with you. He loves being out in the woods or field but poisonous snakes can go with the territory. Dr. Fred Omi, a Veternarian at Kansas State University says that not all snake bites are alike. He says that only half of the bites given to dogs or cats by snakes are injections of venom. The rest are called “dry” bites where the snake bites but does not inject the venom into the dog or cat. Don’t overreact but never ignore your pets snakebite. Don’t attempt to administer pet medication yourself. See your veterinarian right away, he will determine whether the bite needs further treatment.

Wednesday, June 29, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

The answer to this question depends on the research that you do. There are some great 55 and over communities that accept dogs and some even have play areas and special activities for our furry friends. If you have a dog, it’s very important that you do your research if your are considering on over 55 community. You will need to check online first and locate the communities in your area that cater to specific needs of people looking at retirement. When you are looking for quotes online – make sure you specify that you are looking for pet friendly senior homes.  Pets are wonderful for seniors as they grow older and it’s this authors opinion that all 55 and over facilities should allow pets! It’s really ashamed that a lot of them don’t. Your pets are part of your family, you wouldn’t give up a child if you were moving so why should you give up your pets? The heck with the facilities that don’t accept them, you don’t want to live there anyway!!

How to Tell If Your Cat is Startled

Monday, June 27, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

I’m sure you’ve heard your cat hiss and have seen him puff up his tail.  This means that he feels threatened. If you watch closely, when your cat gets startled, the pupils of his eyes will quickly become smaller.  Your cat may show several different signs that he is frightened. He may also run, hide, growl and arch his back. To help reduce your cat’s anxiety, it is much better to slowly introduce anything that is new or different such as new cat toy, object, person and even another animal. Slowly, over time he will become used to the new addition to his environment. If your cat runs off and hides because he his frightened, don’t run after him and try to pull him out from under the sofa or bed. You’ll just make things worse.  Be patient and let him come out when he is ready. One of my cats runs and hides when one of my friends comes over.

One important thing to remember with cats is that you should keep their routine as consistent as possible.  This includes feeding, playing and cuddling.

Dog Weight Loss Should Not Be Ignored

Sunday, June 26, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

Is your dog losing weight, almost like he’s on a diet?  You’ll need to take him to the veterinarian. There are a variety of possible reasons for weight loss. Diet, parasites, diabetes, cancer and heart disease are some causes just to name a few. To make a diagnosis, your veterinarian will ask you about other symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting. Take note of any changes in your dogs behavior.  You may want to consider bringing a stool sample to your veterinarian.  The veterinarian will examine your dog and run a series of tests such as x rays, blood tests or a urine analysis. Then he will make an official diagnosis. Some diet changes and pet medication is all you may need.

The Importance of Protein in a Cats Diet

Saturday, June 25, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

Cats are very special creatures.  A cat needs twice as much protein to keep it’s muscles strong and healthy just like a dog. Cats also require about 20 different kinds of amino acids to make their own body proteins. Those amino acids come from protein and food.  What’s the best source of protein for your cat? The truth is any and all of the protein sources are fine for your cat. Commercial pets foods generally contain at least 30% protein, often from a variety of sources to more than meet your cat’s needs. So if your cat’s are like mine, gormet eaters, you can give beef one day, chicken the next,  and fish the next. Keep that protein comin! Remember, your pets count!

Can Cats Provide Therapy?

Thursday, June 23, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

Many different kinds of animals are used as partners in animal assisted therapy. These can range from birds to rabbits to lamas and horses.  Of course dogs and cats are at the top of the list.  Interacting with pets has a wonderful, calming affect on people that are ill or injured. This can help them feel better both physically and emotionally. Therapy cats can be any size and breed. All that’s required is a calm, gentle personality and interest in people. To prepare to work with a therapist, each cat must go through a training program. It’s taught to sit quietly, tolerate frequent handling by strangers and stay calm in the face of sudden loud noises and distractions.  These cats deserve special recognition for their wonderful abilities to help people that are ill.  Give them an extra cat toy or snack for all of their hard work!

The Massive Mastiff

Wednesday, June 22, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

The Mastiff is an ancient dog breed that was used as a guard dog. The Mastiff was  a hunting companion for nobility and it was loved by peasants because it was a family and livestock protector. They were also used as arena gladiators where they participated in bull, bear, and dog combat. By the end of World War II, the Mastiff was nearly extinct but it was saved because of imports from the United States and Canada.

The Mastiff is a massive, muscular and powerful dog. It’s also one of the heaviest dog breeds. Males can weigh more than 200 pounds.  They have a dominant demeanor  and are fearless, alert and extremely  courageous. These dogs are extremely loyal and very devoted to their family. Mastiffs need lots of love, companionship and attention. They do not do well when left alone for long periods of time.  The Mastiff does well with older, considerate children in the household. They only do well with household pets that they have been raised with. They are naturally protective of their family and home and are not recommended for the novice, inexperienced or passive owner.

How to Choose a Groomer For your Dog

Tuesday, June 21, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

If your dog has long hair and if you don’t have time to give him regular baths, you may want to take him to a groomer on a regular basis.  When choosing a groomer, first ask about their experience.

  • How long have they been in the dog grooming business?
  • What kind of training did they receive? Are they certified by NDGAA or another organization?
  • Do they specialize in any breed size or particular breed of dog? Are there any restrictions on the types of dogs they work with?
Ask about their level of service like cleaning your dog’s ears, checking his anal glands etc.  Find out whether or not their fees are within your budget.
Safety is very important. I would ask the following questions.
  • Do they use a hand held dryer or a cage dryer? (I would prefer a hand held). If they do use a cage dryer, find out if someone always stays with the dogs. If they don’t, I would go elsewhere.
  • Do they sedate the dogs for grooming? If so, who does it and what type of training do they have?
  • Where do they keep the dogs when they’re  not being groomed or waiting to be groomed?
  • What happens in an emergency or if your dog is injured? Is there a veterinarian on call or does someone have first aid training?
  • How is their record keeping? Do they keep complete records like medical, vaccinations and grooming history?
All of these things are important to consider when choosing a groomer.
After his first grooming session, give your dog a dog treat and lots of love!

Summer time is here and as the heat rises, air conditioners can be overworked. If your air conditioner fails and the temperature rises to nearly 90 degrees insides, can it affect our feline friends? The answer is yes.  Cats can get heatstroke just as dogs can. Here’s what you should do if you think that your cat may be overheated.

  • keep plenty of water available and place some ice cubes in the water.
  • wipe you cat down with a cool cloth. Cats only sweat through their paws so it’s a good idea to wipe the paws with a cool cloth.
  • Use a bag of frozen peas and place it around a soft blanket or towel. Then put it in your cats bed.
  • Repeat wiping her down and make sure that she is not panting or breathing very fast.

If there are any signs such as panting, bright red tongue, vomiting, diarrhea or bleeding from the nose, get your cat to a vet right away, she is probably suffering from heat stroke.

This situation is something that you should be aware of because air conditioning units are strained in this extreme heat.

Some puppies get so excited when someone comes through the door that they urinate on the floor. Even a well trained, older dog can exhibit this behavior.  When a puppy gets older and gets a little more confident, accidental urination should go away.  The dog owner can re-enforce this behavior by accident.  If your dog is having accidents when you walk through the door and medical conditions were ruled out by your veterinarian,  never scold your puppy for this behavior and don’t reward him for it either. Hold off on any dog treats until later.   If you console the dog after he pees on the floor, you are sending the message that this behavior is OK.  Always keep your entrance to the house low key. Ignore the dogs excitement and wait until he is calm before you pet him.
