Interpreting Your Cats Meows

Sunday, July 31, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

When your cat meows, do you know what he is trying to tell you? Probably not, but the way a cat meows can indicate how he is feeling and what he would like from you. Here’s a short list of different kinds of “meow requests.”

  • Short meow: Standard greeting.
  • Multiple meows: Excited greetings.
  • Mid-pitch meow: Plea for something like food or water.
  • Drawn-out mrrroooow: A demand for something.
  • Low pitch MRRRooooowww: A complaint or displeasure
  • Lower than mid pitch MEEOOOOOOwww: Begging, for something such as food.
  • High-pitch RRRROWW!: Anger, pain or being fearful.
  • Chatter (rapid teeth-chattering): Excitement, frustration.
  • Chirrup (a cross between a meow and a purr with rising inflection): Friendly greeting sound, often used by a mother cat to call to her kittens.
  • Purr: Invites close contact or attention.
  • Hiss: A serious sign of aggression.

So pay attention to what your cat is trying to tell you, it may be important!

Today, many brands of dog foods are specially formulated  not only for your dog’s age but for his breed. Energy dense foods may help compensate for the fact that smaller breeds have a higher metabolism and are also more finicky eaters than larger breeds. Some companies also state that the antioxidants in their small breed formula can help support a small dog’s longer life expectancy. Meanwhile, larger breed dogs are more susceptible to bone and joint ailments.  They may benefit from food containing glucoseamine and chondroitin which  prevents cartilage breakdown as well as a low carbohydrate, low fat diet to control the excess weight that can stress joints.

Cats, Fighting or Playing?

Friday, July 29, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

If you have two cats and one is stalking the other in the middle of the living room, the two jump on each other and look like a ferocious ball of fur. Are they playing or fighting?  Cat play is quieter. You won’t hear the loud wailing of a serious fight. During play, the offensive and defensive roles shift back and forth. Cats usually don’t get injured in the fake battles and afterward, neither seems afraid of the other. They will also display friendly behavior between these “fake battles.”  Remember, if your cat’s tiff  involves howling, flattened ears, dilated pupils, arched backs and puffy hair, make a loud noise or spray them with water because you have a real fight on your hands. Play with them with their cat toys to keep them occupied and away from each other for awhile. Remember, pets are family!

After years of research, scientists have found that certain compounds in cranberries can prevent  urinary tract infections in humans. The compounds don’t actually kill the bacteria, it would take an antibiotic to do that but the cranberry compounds can act as a preventative. Amy Howell who is an associate research scientist at Rutgers University says that the disease causing bacteria cannot stick to the bladder wall and lose their ability to multiply. The bacteria is then washed out of your system. She says that the same process works in dogs. Not all cranberry products are equal. Ask your veterinarian for cranberry products that have hard hitting bio active properties. So hold off on the pet medication until you try a cranberry product for your dog’s urinary tract.

More Attention for Older Cats

Wednesday, July 27, 2022

Our cat Millie is  seventeen and a half years old. Although she can still jump and run, she has slowed down. She seems to sleep more, eat less and need more attention. She doesn’t want her little routine broken. Millie now likes to spend most of her time with us in the family room. She has taken over the chair that I usually sit in so we have a schedule. Millie takes over this chair most of the day. She also expects to be fed a certain times, have snacks at certain times and be brushed at certain times. I guess she’s kind of like me as I get older.

Luckily, we are home most of the time so we have this time to spend quality time with our Millie.

If your senior cat needs more attention, make sure you give it to him after all he provided you with a lifetime of love.

Maintaining Your Pets Paws

When you groom your dog, you do more than just make them look pretty. It’s also a good opportunity to check for any health issues that should be addressed by a veterinarian. For example, you should keep a protective eye on her paws. When you groom your dog, carefully check the pads on her feet. Sometimes they could become injured or inflamed, especially if your dog is walking on rough ground or stepped into some kind of irritating chemical. Keep an eye out for painful, broken nails that could become infected. Brittle nails should also prompt you to call a professional because they indicate a fungal infection or a nutritional deficiency. If you notice anything unusual, have it checked by a veterinarian.

Unexpected Visitors

Monday, July 25, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

The other evening while I was in my living room watching a program on TV, I suddenly heard tapping on the window. It was the window that looked out onto our porch. I then heard rumbling and banging out on the porch. I walked over to the sliding glass doors and saw a family of Raccoons ravaging through everything.  They seemed to be having a good time as they kept pushing each other away from the bowl that we use to feed several feral and stray cats. There was some food left in the bowl and I neglected to get rid of it before dark.

Each day we put out some dry food for several cats in the area and usually they eat all of it before the end of the day. This day, they probably had their feast at a neighbors house. Left over food must be removed or your unwanted visitors will arrive after sunset.

Although Raccoons are cute creatures, they can cause damage and at time be aggressive so if you’re going to feed the ferals, make sure you remove any left over food each day!

The Challenge of Changing Pet Food

Sunday, July 24, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

Changing to a new pet food can be a challenge. Unlike us, your pet should not eat one kind of pet food for breakfast and a completely different food for dinner.  If you decide to change from one pet food to another, you should do so slowly.  Changing foods too fast, can affect you pets GI system. If you change slowly, this problem will be kept to a minimum. With sudden changes in their diet, pets are prone to stomach upset,  gas, bloating,  diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal problems.  Increase the amount of a new food little by little, over a period of five to seven days.  Slowly decrease the old food and you pet will be less likely to get an upset stomach.  Remember, cat or dog treats, do not take the place of regular pet food.

Pets and Home Remodeling

I hate remodeling the house. There’s always the mess, work and upheaval.  What an inconvenience! Imagine how our pets feel during this unsettling time.  They don’t know that all of the strangers in the house are actually being paid for this disruption. There are some ways that you could minimize the stress. If the construction is major, see if a friend or kennel can board your pet during the construction period. If not, keep pets confined to an area far away from the noise. Provide a cozy crate along with favorite dog or cat toys, blankets and clothes with your scent. When the workers go away, your pets may come out but keep them away from paints, solvents, nails or anything that could injure them. Try to maintain your normal routines during remodeling. Feed, walk and play with your pet as usual. This will help you both stay calm until the dust clears and the workers are gone!

Keep Your Dog Away from Garbage

Tuesday, July 19, 2022

Does your dog always go for the dumpster when he sees one? Dogs that eat trash are living dangerously!  Not only are bone parts and other pieces of garbage hazardous to your dog’s digestive system but moist food can become toxic quickly.  Did you know that disgarded food scraps grow fungus in a couple of days? This poses a great risk to your dog. Moldy cheese product like old pizza are exceptionally dangerous because they contain toxins that can give your dog muscle tremors and seizures. Keep you dog on his dog leash and away from the trash while walking him. If he does manage to get into the garbage, watch him very closely. If he has a loss of appetite, shivering or yellow eyes or lips, there’s  a major problem. Make sure that you call your vet immediately.
