Leaving Your Cat Alone

Monday, June 20, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

catsitterhomeYou have no choice but you have to leave town on business and must leave your beloved cat at home. This always made me a little nervous. Cats are independent but they do get lonely. Here’s what I would recommend. Cats are most comfortable in their own environment and if you could get someone that is reliable and likes pets to stay with your cat, that would be perfect. If you can’t, the second best choice is to get a reliable friend or neighbor to look in on your cat every day. It is important that someone be there at some point each day while you’re away.

Write down specific instructions for the pet sitter. This should include the time, amount and type of cat food that is fed. Make sure that their water bowl is filled at all times. I would have them fill two or three large bowls of water. Make sure that the sitter knows where everything is located.

It is important to provide the sitter important phone numbers, like your number, your vets name and number as well as the local police and fire department.

Finally, your cat does need affection. Make sure that the sitter is comfortable petting and playing with your cat. Leave lots of cat toys around for your cat to play with. I would ask the sitter to play will your cat a little each day. Before you know it, you’ll be back home with your pet.

Cat Food for a Diabetic Cat

Monday, June 20, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

cateatWhen your cat has diabetes, she’s prone to large peaks and valleys in her blood glucose level. This is a situation that you need to monitor carefully. Steven Carone, who is a Veterinarian with Nestle, Purina Pet Care Company says that in recent years nutritionists have discovered that the right diet can help to regular a diabetic cat’s blood glucose levels. The proper cat food is key. Reducing the amount of carbohydrates and increasing their protein intake will help to manage diabetes. Reducing the amount of carbohydrates can help to blunt the cats glucose curve and can have a positive effect on a cat’s long term health. Some cats actually go off insulin when they are put on a high protein, carb. restrictive kind of diet. Your vet will guide you as to the proper cat food that contains the correct balance of carbs and protein. Even cats that still need insulin, often require less. Always check the carb and protein levels of your cats food and cat treats.

Cats and Boxes

Sunday, June 19, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

catboxWhy are cats so fascinated with boxes?  I always let my cats explore empty boxes before throwing them away. They have all kinds of cat toys and many cat beds everywhere but why the urge to explore an empty box? Curling up inside a small enclose space makes your kitty feel safe. This could be in the comfortable cat bed that you bought for him or inside an empty box. Cat like to watch their environment and yet be invisible. This is how they hide from predators. In the wild, you could walk right past a leopard and not even know he was there. Cats and kittens do the same thing. They hide in boxes or under beds and spring into action when they are unnoticed. A cardboard box is a place where he feels safe and could be sneaky. So when you purchase a new product, let kitty explore that empty box even it’s only for a little while.

Essentials You’ll Need For Your New Puppy

Saturday, June 18, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

cutestpuppyWhen you bring home a new puppy, you’ll want to have a few essential accessories on hand. Especially formulated puppy food and tip proof food and water bowls. An adjustable cloth or nylon collar along with a leash for those frequent walks that you’ll be taking. A roomy crate, dog carrier or dog bed is also essential because your pup will do a lot of sleeping at first. Don’t forget about an ID tag and put it on his collar right away just in case he wanders off. Other items that come in extremely handy include training pads, grooming supplies and toys for chasing and for chewing. Your energetic new pup will need things to keep him occupied when you’re busy or away from home.

Lawn Treatment Can Be Toxic To Your Pet

Friday, June 17, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

doglawnIf you are planning to use pesticides or fertilizers on your lawn, you must think about the affect they may have on your cat or dog. Keep your dog or cat (if he goes outside) inside for at least 24 hours after applying any chemical to your lawn. If he must go out, keep him on his dog leash and away from the treated areas.Don’t toss around any dog toys to him or give him the opportunity to pick up anything on the treated lawn. There’s no need to panic. If applied properly, these chemicals can irritate your dog or cats paws but they rarely can poison a pet. Clean up any pesticide spills. A puddle of the stuff could be dangerous to your pet. Please note that research had shown an increase in cases of lymphoma in dogs that were exposed to the herbicide 2 4 D. Make sure that you read all of the labels and take the proper precautions.

dogsniffWe think that we know everything about our dogs. Their favorite dog treat, dog food, dog bed, toy etc. but our best friends have some secrets. Here are some things that you may not have have know about dogs.

  1. The smell center of a dogs brain is 40 times larger than ours. Dogs can smell thousands of times better than us. We have 5 million scent receptors while a dog has 125 million. That’s why they can smell things like drugs, dead bodies, bed bugs, explosives, and more.
  2. Dogs dream like people.Researchers found that dogs have similar sleep patterns and brain activity as humans, and that small breeds tend to dream more than large ones.
  3. Dogs are as smart as a two year old baby. Your best friend can count, understand over 150 words, and even trick you into giving him a dog treat.
  4. Dogs only mate twice a year. Unspayed females only go into heat twice a year so breeders must plan carefully.
  5. Tail wagging has it’s own language. You think that if your dog is excitedly wagging his tail, he’s happy right? Not necessarily. Dog wag their tails to the right when they’re happy and to the left when they’re frightened.

We learn new things everyday about our best friends.

Beach Dogs

posted by Jim Murphy

springerbeachIf you live near the beach and own a dog, I’m sure that you take your dog to the beach every now and then to exercise him in the early morning or a dusk when everyone’s leaving for the day. There are some dog breeds that have a particular love for surf and sand.

The Springer Spaniel is very loyal and even tempered and they crave regular exercise of any kind but they really love swimming. If you are near the shore that this guy to the shore as often as you can.

Golden Retriever They are on the larger side, easy to train, very faithful and love the water and to fetch those toys.  Take him to the beach and bring along lots of dog toys that float and take along some dog treats of course.

Newfoundland This is another large dog but his webbed feet make him very suitable for water. This dog was originally bred in Canada as workers for fisherman. They have a particular love for the water.

Enjoy the  summer at the beach with your “best” friend.

Feline Rivalry and Aggression

Thursday, June 16, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

FELIEN RIVALRYI have two female cats. Molly is almost 17 years old and Millie is 11. We adopted Millie when she was just two months old. Now,11 years later, the two do not get along. Molly intimidates Millie and has been ever since we adopted her. She spits and swats at her, she blocks her from getting to her litter box. We’ve been having a problem with Millie urinating in spots outside of her litter box. I believe that Millie does this because of Molly’s aggression. At his point, I am not hopeful that the problem will be resolved. Love to Know.Com has put together some guidelines to follow when it comes to rivalry and aggression.

There are a few steps you can take to try to reduce the stress between your cats. It is imperative that the new cat feel safe when he tries to use the litter box or he may eventually decide it is too much trouble to use the litter box and begin to use the bathroom elsewhere.

Each cat should have his/her own litter box. That means if you have two cats, you have two separate litter boxes.
Try placing the new litter box for the new cat into a different area than where you keep the female cat’s litter box. Simply take him to the new box and place him in it. Cats are smart and get the idea quickly.
When you are not home, contain the new cat in the area with his litter box. This also means keep the other cat out of this area. You can do this by closing a door or purchasing a gate, but be careful that you purchase a gate specifically for cats as they can easily jump over most barriers.
If you notice the female cat harassing the new cat, gently remove her to another area of the house until he has finished his business. It may take a while, but she’ll get the idea eventually.

It’s important that you do this as soon as you notice the aggression. In our case, we waited too long before taking action.

The Kind People who Foster Animals

Wednesday, June 15, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

DOGFOSTERSometimes instead of fostering a child, foster parents choose to foster an animal. These foster parents take in shelter dog and cats that are ill, not socialized or not yet weaned and turn them into healthy, loving, adoptable pets. By providing temporary homes, foster parents enable shelters to take in more animals than they would otherwise have room for. So if you have the time, space and love to share with a foster pet, contact your local shelter or rescue group. If your application is approved, you’ll attend training sessions to learn how to socialize, house train and maybe even bottle feed your foster pet. The hardest part of fostering is giving up your foster pet. After you buy the cat bed or dog crate, they are hard to let go of but you are doing a wonderful service by providing shelter and care for a sheltered pet!
