DOGTHINDERSevere thunderstorms are predicted for parts of the east coast today. How do we keep our furry friends calms during these storms? Thunderstorms stress me out and I’m sure pets get stressed as well. Here are some tips to calm your dog during a thunderstorm.

  1. Close the blinds or cover the windows so your dog can’t see outside.
  2. Make sure your dog has a safe indoor area preferable a plastic dog crate. If you have a wire crate, cover it with a sheet so you dog will have a safe haven. Leave the door open so your dog doesn’t feel trapped.
  3. Play calming music to drown out the thunder.
  4. Stay with your dog. Don’t leave him alone.
  5. Try to distract your dog with dog treats and his favorite dog toys.
  6. You can try to desensitize him by downloading some thunderstorm sounds. Play them quietly and give your dog his dog treats and play with him with his dog toys while the sounds are playing. Over several weeks gradually increase the sound . Stop the treats and dog toys when the sound is turned off. Your goal is to get your dog to associate the sound of thunder with happy times.
  7. You can use calming massage to reassure your dog.
