PETPOTTYJust watching all of the long lines at the airports on television is enough to make me never want to fly. Unfortunately  this may not be realistic. There are times that we also need to take our pets which will make things even more complicated. You must remember to pack their water bowl, dog leash, pet carrier and some fresh dog food in addition to all or your belongings.

According to the New York Post, JFK airport recently opened a pet potty -complete with fake grass and even a red fire hydrant – in Terminal 4. The restroom is a single stall bathroom which is decorated with paw prints, lined with epoxy and includes waterproof turf. It’s a hit with all of the traveling pet parents!

Now if they can only reduce those lines for us humans!

Pets and Divorce

Thursday, May 19, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

divorcedogYou bought cozy dog beds or cat beds, pet carriers, dog toys, cat toys expensive dog and cat food and the list goes on. You’ve done this in order to make a good home for your pet. Then you get a divorce. According to the ASPCA, 29% of dogs that are surrendered at shelters are there as a result of a divorce. Unlike children, there is no legal framework for dealing with pet ownership when dealing with a divorce beyond the division of property. Some couples will battle fiercely on who keeps the pet but they often have to work this out on their own. There are some mediation firms that provide help with this issue. Experts urge owners to consider finances, time commitments and the well being of the pet when planning a split. Of course —NEVER send him to a shelter. After all, would you send a child?

Breaking In A Pet Sitter

Tuesday, May 17, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

petsitterThe first step is picking the right sitter for your dog. My first choice would be someone that I know and my dog knows and trusts. That’s half the battle. This person should be able to balance and calm your dog down if he is nervous. I would not suggest, leaving a dog who is a bit hyperactive with an elderly relative. The Pet Sitter should understand the needs of your dog. The best thing to do is to have the Pet Sitter, come to your home, stay there while you’re away and maintain the dog’s daily routine. Make the sitter knows where all of the dog’s supplies, like dog food, dog leash and any pet medication that he may need is located. Keep the walking, feeding and sleeping schedule the same.

If you have to leave your dog at another location, make sure that you get him familiar with the surroundings. May several trips to the new location. Make sure that he’s comfortable before leaving him.

If you choose to leave your dog with a family member, make sure that they know the whole routine. For example, if your dog is used to a one hour walk in the morning, a fifteen minute walk won’t do it.

Leave a checklist for the Pet Sitter, include important information like your phone number, the vet’s phone number and address and the nearest 24 hour animal hospital. If there are any medications, leave very detailed instructions on how the medication should be administered as well as the frequency and time. Also, make sure the Pet Sitter knows how ofter to check the dog water bowl. It should be filled at all times. Note any behavior issues like whether or not you allow the dog on the furniture. Inform the sitter as to when the dog should receive a treat.

If you follow these tips, just relax. Your dog will be in good hands while you’re gone. It’s a good idea to check in with the sitter every few days if you’re going to be gone for an extended period of time.

A Few Interesting Facts About Cats

Tuesday, May 17, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

crazycatThere are about 75 million cats in the U.S. and they are one of this country’s favorite pets. Here are some things about cats that you may not be aware of.

1. A cat that is falling corrects it’s position in a particular order. You may wonder why they always land on their feet. As a cat is falling, it rotates it’s head to face forwards. It then twists its back to align its spine upwards and then align it’s legs accordingly. The cat then will arch it’s back to minimize the impact when landing.

2. Cats hardly ever meow at one another. They will hiss and growl at one another if they feel threatened. The meow sound is reserved for cat- human interaction only. If your cat meows, you should assume that it’s speaking directly to you.

3. Eating grass is healthy for cats and helps with digestion. In addition to cat food and cat treats, you can buy grass for them to graze on at your pet store. It’s usually in the cat accessories section where the cat toys are.

4. Cats have a distinctive walk that only two other animal have. Look closely, you’ll notice that your cat walks by moving it’s left feet then it’s right feet in unison. Dogs alternate one left then one right. This promotes better agility and ensures silence when they are walking. The camel and giraffe are the only two other animals that walk this way.

5. Kittens are born deaf and blind and it takes about 5 days for a kitten to open it’s eyes. Vision and hearing begin to develop in the second week. When they are adults, cats have an incredible hearing range much better than humans. Their night vision is six times better then ours and they have 285 degree peripheral vision.

What Is A Sugar Glider?

Monday, May 16, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

SUGARGLIDERLast summer, we were at the Delaware State Fair and came across the cutest little creature on display in one of the tents. I asked about this animal and was told that it was a Sugar Glider. They live in cages like a hamster or gerbil but their cage must be quite large. They love to snuggle inside your pocket.

What is a Sugar Glider? Here are some facts found on the Glider website.

A sugar glider (petaurus breviceps) is a small, nocturnal marsupial. Sugar gliders are in the same family as the kangaroo and koala bear, so they also have a pouch in which their babies grow. They get the name “sugar glider,” from two facts: They feed on sweet gums and saps, among other things, in the wild, giving them the first name, “sugar.” The “glider” portion comes from the distinctive flap of skin (patagium) connecting their front and hind legs on both sides, allowing them to glide surprising distances from branch to branch among the trees. They are social animals that live in colonies and love communicating with their colony mates, so we recommend that they live with at least one other sugar glider.

It’s easy to have the urge to adopt one of these unique creatures but here are some things that may or may not change your mind.

Sugar Gliders are nocturnal which means that they sleep during the day and are active at night.

They do make excellent pets and loving members of the family, but they are “exotic” pets, they are a unique pet, and very different from a dog or cat. Like a smaller pet, such as a rodent or bird, they should be kept in a cage at night for their own safety. Because of their size, they should always be supervised if they are around other pets. They are also very social animals. You can’t feed it and leave it. They require lots of attention and do well in pairs. Sugar Gliders can live for 11 – 12 years so are making a long commitment if you choose to adopt one. You must check your states laws. They are not legal in all states.

The most difficult aspect about caring for a Sugar Glider is it’s diet. You can’t give in hamster food or gerbil food. They require a fresh diet.

Here are some essentials that you will need when adopting a Sugar Glider.

Cage
Excercise Wheel
Sleeping Pouches
Glass Water Bottle
Nutritional Package
Prepared Food – they need a diet that is high in protein and calcium It should be low in fat and phosphorus, and loaded with fresh fruits and vegetables. See the diet recommended by The Pet Glider.

dogvitaminsMost dogs get a fully balanced meal by being fed a high quality dog food. This includes the necessary vitamins and minerals. If you feed your dog a homemake diet, then you may want to include vitamins or supplements. This is critical but it should be done to match the kind of diet that you are feeding your dog. You really can’t just pop a vitamin in your dogs mouth and leave at that. Check with your vet. He will analyze your dogs diet and determine whether or not he needs any vitamins or supplements.

Remember if an animal already eats a balanced diet and receives excess portions of some vitamins and minerals, they could be harmful, according to the FDA and veterinarians.

Ensuring That You Dog’s Toys Are Safe

Sunday, May 15, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

dogchewtoysYour dog loves his dog toys but some may be safer than others. Dogs love to chew and it’s important to know what toys are the safest for your best friend. The Humane Society has put together some very good guidelines on how to ensure that all of your dog’s toys are safe including his chew toys.

Many factors contribute to the safety or danger of a toy, and a number of them depend upon your dog’s size, activity level and preferences. Another factor to be considered is the environment in which your dog spends his time. Although we can’t guarantee the safety of any specific toy, we can offer the following guidelines.
The things that are usually most attractive to dogs are often the very things that are the most dangerous. Dog-proof your home by removing string, ribbon, rubber bands, children’s toys, pantyhose and anything else that could be swallowed.
Toys should be appropriate for your dog’s size. Balls and other toys that are too small can easily be swallowed or become lodged in your dog’s throat.
Avoid or alter any toys that aren’t “dog-proof” by removing ribbons, strings, eyes or other parts that could be chewed off and/or ingested. Discard toys that start to break into pieces or are torn.
Take note of any toy that contains a “squeaker” buried in its center. Your dog may feel that he must find and destroy the source of the squeaking, and he could ingest it. Supervise your dog’s play with squeaky toys.
Check labels for child safety. Look for stuffed toys that are labeled as safe for children under three years of age and that don’t contain any dangerous fillings. Problem fillings include nutshells and polystyrene beads, but even “safe” stuffings aren’t truly digestible. Remember that soft toys are not indestructible, but some are sturdier than others. Soft toys should be machine washable.

INVISIBLEFENCEIs there any protection for your dog when you use an invisible fence? The answer is “no.” This type of fence only works when the dog is wearing an active shock collar. Other loose dogs and animals will have full access to your yard and dog. If a pedestrian walks into your yard and your dog charges at him, there could be big problems. There is also nothing to deter the theft of your dog. Dog theft is increasing and owners must make access to the yard and dog difficult. There is also the danger of illness or rabies if a strange animal enters your yard and bites your dog. Invisible fence don’t confine your dog properly. Sometimes the dog gets used to the shock and gets out of the yard. You are better off buying an outdoor dog gate and containing him within that area. Of course you need to keep a close eye on him. Make sure to keep his water bowl filled at all time. Give him some outside dog toys to keep him occupied.

Reading this, you now my opinion of invisible fences. Don’t use them, there are too many risks. Keep your dog secure, fence in your yard and keep a close eye on him.
