Breaking In A Pet Sitter

posted by Jim Murphy

petsitterThe first step is picking the right sitter for your dog. My first choice would be someone that I know and my dog knows and trusts. That’s half the battle. This person should be able to balance and calm your dog down if he is nervous. I would not suggest, leaving a dog who is a bit hyperactive with an elderly relative. The Pet Sitter should understand the needs of your dog. The best thing to do is to have the Pet Sitter, come to your home, stay there while you’re away and maintain the dog’s daily routine. Make the sitter knows where all of the dog’s supplies, like dog food, dog leash and any pet medication that he may need is located. Keep the walking, feeding and sleeping schedule the same.

If you have to leave your dog at another location, make sure that you get him familiar with the surroundings. May several trips to the new location. Make sure that he’s comfortable before leaving him.

If you choose to leave your dog with a family member, make sure that they know the whole routine. For example, if your dog is used to a one hour walk in the morning, a fifteen minute walk won’t do it.

Leave a checklist for the Pet Sitter, include important information like your phone number, the vet’s phone number and address and the nearest 24 hour animal hospital. If there are any medications, leave very detailed instructions on how the medication should be administered as well as the frequency and time. Also, make sure the Pet Sitter knows how ofter to check the dog water bowl. It should be filled at all times. Note any behavior issues like whether or not you allow the dog on the furniture. Inform the sitter as to when the dog should receive a treat.

If you follow these tips, just relax. Your dog will be in good hands while you’re gone. It’s a good idea to check in with the sitter every few days if you’re going to be gone for an extended period of time.

A Few Interesting Facts About Cats

crazycatThere are about 75 million cats in the U.S. and they are one of this country’s favorite pets. Here are some things about cats that you may not be aware of.

1. A cat that is falling corrects it’s position in a particular order. You may wonder why they always land on their feet. As a cat is falling, it rotates it’s head to face forwards. It then twists its back to align its spine upwards and then align it’s legs accordingly. The cat then will arch it’s back to minimize the impact when landing.

2. Cats hardly ever meow at one another. They will hiss and growl at one another if they feel threatened. The meow sound is reserved for cat- human interaction only. If your cat meows, you should assume that it’s speaking directly to you.

3. Eating grass is healthy for cats and helps with digestion. In addition to cat food and cat treats, you can buy grass for them to graze on at your pet store. It’s usually in the cat accessories section where the cat toys are.

4. Cats have a distinctive walk that only two other animal have. Look closely, you’ll notice that your cat walks by moving it’s left feet then it’s right feet in unison. Dogs alternate one left then one right. This promotes better agility and ensures silence when they are walking. The camel and giraffe are the only two other animals that walk this way.

5. Kittens are born deaf and blind and it takes about 5 days for a kitten to open it’s eyes. Vision and hearing begin to develop in the second week. When they are adults, cats have an incredible hearing range much better than humans. Their night vision is six times better then ours and they have 285 degree peripheral vision.
