puppyhomeIt’s very important n not to jump to conclusions when it comes to adopting a dog. So before you buy the dog bed ,dog food, dog leash, dog toys, STOP and, ask yourself the following 10 questions.

  1. What’s the best breed for our lifestyle?
  2. Will we have the time to give the dog the proper training?
  3. Will there always be someone around to walk and feed the dog?
  4. Are the children old enough to be given the responsibility of caring for a dog?
  5. We will have the time to care for the dog? Are we away too much?
  6. Who will care for the dog if we are away?
  7. Can we afford the extra expense?
  8. Is our yard large enough and secure enough for the dog to play outside?
  9. Are we home enough? Dogs get lonely and like to have people around.
  10. Are we getting the dog for the right reasons? (Not just because our child wants one.)
Seriously, ask yourself these questions before you decide to adopt a dog.

Doggies Nose Color Changes

Monday, September 19, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

dognoseIf notice any changes in your dog’s nose color, there’s probably no need for alarm. A nose that’s normally dark can change color for several reasons. It may look pink or brown. Sometimes, the season is the reason for the change. The change can occur in the colder months. This is due to pigment loss because of the temperature. Sunburn can also cause a problem. Applying sunscreen can help. Some noses are sensitive to plastic food and water bowls. This can cause contact dermatitis. Normal color may return if you change the food and water bowls to steel or ceramic. If your dog seems healthy, in every other way, nose color changes are probably not a problem. If there are other symptoms such as a loss of appetite or listlessness, see your veterinarian.

Maltese Plus Pomeranian Equals Malte Pom

Monday, September 19, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

matepopWhen you cross a Maltese with a Pomeranian, you get a Malte Pom. Sometimes these dogs are called Pomenese , these great little dogs grow to five up to nine pounds and are clever, amusing and affectionate. They need regular and rigorous exercise  and lots of dog toys to minimize barking and boredom. The white coat of the Maltese mixes with the Pomeranian’s apricot, cream, black or brown to create varying shades and patches of color. The long, silky fur on the Malte Pom doesn’t shed but needs regular grooming and brushing or a short cut. Malte Poms live between 12 and 15 years and some say that they are healthier than the breeds that they descended from. Malte Poms are recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club but as with all designer dogs, not by the American Kennel Club.

Remember, lots of exercise, dog toys, treats and love. Your pets count!

Pay Attention To Your English Bulldog

Sunday, September 18, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

englishbuldogIf you own an English Bulldog, you know that he is your best friend and you’ll also know that he wants to spend every waking moment with you. They always want to be around the ones that they love.

Ignoring an English Bulldog is a big no no in their book. They won’t easily forgive you for not paying attention to them. You can offer them a dog treat, or take them for an extra long walk on their dog leash but that won’t make up for your lack of attention. English Bulldogs can be stubborn and hard to train. Most trainers would agree that they are not pets for first time dog owners who have little experience handling the pig headed pups.

English Bulldogs can be prone to a variety go health problems including bad eyesight, mast cell tumors, heat strokes, allergies, and hip problems, which means you may end up spending a lot of time and money at the vet’s office.

I’m not saying that English Bulldogs make bad pets, just be aware of some of the issues that are common for this particular breed. Give them lots of love, attention and dog forget the dog treats!

Remember, your pets count!

Dog clothes, cat food and all of your pet products are available in The Pet Product Guru Store.

How To Prepare Your Home for Your New Pup

Saturday, September 17, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

puppyhomeBefore you bring a new puppy home, you should prepare your house. Young dogs seem to get into anything and everything within reach. If you’re not prepared, their curiosity could prove dangerous. Start by looking at your house the way dog would see it. Look down low for items that could be hazardous such as trash, electrical wires or sharp objects. Make sure that you keep pesticides, chemicals, medicines and anti freeze out of reach. The best idea is to store these dangerous items in a locked cabinet. Some houseplants can also prove poisonous to pets so keep them up high. Divert his attention by putting dog toys around for him to play with. Keep his water bowl away for electricity and make sure his dog bed is in a safe, quiet place. No matter how well that you think you puppy proofed your home, you still need to watch your new little friend every carefully.

puppyaccessWhen you bring home a new puppy, you’ll want to have a few essential accessories on hand. Especially formulated puppy food and tip proof food and water bowls. An adjustable cloth or nylon collar along with a leash for those frequent walks that you’ll be taking. A roomy crate, dog carrier or dog bed is also essential because your pup will do a lot of sleeping at first. Don’t forget about an ID tag and put it on his collar right away just in case he wanders off. Other items that come in extremely handy include training pads, grooming supplies and toys for chasing and for chewing. Your energetic new pup will need things to keep him occupied when you’re busy or away from home.

Pets Hate Remodeling

Friday, September 16, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

doghidecathideI hate remodeling the house. There’s always the mess, work and upheaval. What an inconvenience! Before we moved to Delaware, we did some minor renovation to our apartment in New Jersey. It was a mess. I had to move my cats litter pans, cat food, water bowls, cat toys and cram them into one room.  Imagine how our pets feel during this unsettling time. They don’t know that all of the strangers in the house are actually being paid for this disruption.

There are some ways that you could minimize the stress. If the construction is major, see if a friend or kennel can board your pet during the construction period. If not, keep pets confined to an area far away from the noise. Provide a cozy crate along with favorite dog or cat toys, blankets and clothes with your scent. When the workers go away, your pets may come out but keep them away from paints, solvents, nails or anything that could injure them. Try to maintain your normal routines during remodeling. Feed, walk and play with your pet as usual. This will help you both stay calm until the dust clears and the workers are gone! Hopefully that renovation will be done soon!

Cool Crusin Dogs

dogcarwindowDoes your dog love to ride in the car? His head is stuck out the window and he loves the breeze and all of the things that he smells.  The best thing to do is keep your dog safe and secure in his dog crate. If your dog is very large, this may not be practical. Dog Crates can be big and bulky and difficult to get into a smaller car.

What could be the harm in having your dog in the back seat with his head out the window?  Eye injuries that’s what so many vets hate to see. Think of all of the things that go splat on your window and you can imagine how many potentially harmful things could get into your dog’s eyes. There is a compromise. Roll down your window just enough for the dog’s nose. Those great smells will still be there. All that’s missing is the risk to your dog’s vision. Don’t forget to buckle your dog up. A properly fitted seat belt harness will keep your dog in place and from harm when you make that sharp turn.

How Do You Know If Your Cat Has Fleas?

Thursday, September 15, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

catscratchTo tell you the truth, I am not a good flea detector. Cats are fastidious groomers and their behavior car appear normal unless you suspect that they may have fleas. My cat Millie occasionally goes out on our porch when I’m out there. I’ve noticed that she’s been scratching her neck recently so the first thing I suspect is that she may have fleas. This is not always the case. After a thorough investigation, I still don’t see any evidence of a flea infestation. I am not completely sure so I bought a flea and tick product just to be on the safe side.

According to Pet Md, In severe infestations, it’s easy to spot fleas jumping and moving on and off your cat’s body. In less obvious situations, you may notice that your cat is restless and doing more scratching or chewing on certain areas of his body. Shaking the head often and scratching at the ears is another indication of a possible flea infestation in your cat.

Excessive and constant licking at the haircoat is another sign of potential fleas, especially in cats. Many cats will even groom the fleas out of the haircoat before you get a chance to see the evidence.

Remember, there are lots of pet medications and flea and tick products on the market. Check with your vet and let him recommend the best product for your pet.

greenie-pill-pocketIt can be very difficult to give a cat a pill. I have to give my cat Molly a pill twice a day. She has to take pet medication for hyperthyroidism. I buy a product called Greenie Pill Pockets. These are moist treats with a carved out hole in the middle where you sneak the pill. Molly loves these and sits in the kitchen all the time waiting for me to give her another one. She would eat these instead of cat food or cat treats if she had her way. Even though Greenies make nutritious cat treats, they are kind of expensive. About $9.00 for 45 pill pockets. It works great for giving medications but can break your pocket book if you are using them for treats. As all of you know, I spoil Molly so she does get some of those pill pockets as treats –—ouch—-It seems like I’m always buying more!

Molly recently has discovered a way to eat around the pill and leave it on the floor. I occasionally find a pink pill on the floor. Now I watch her until she finishes the pill pocket including the pill. Cats are smart but they are also sneaky!

Get pill pockets and all of your pet supplies in The Pet Product Guru Store.
