Dogs and Fall Allergies

Sunday, September 25, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

dogsfallFall is here and as the season changes, humans as well as our best friends are subjected to allergies. My allergies bother me much worse in the fall than in the spring time. In fall, the dying plants can stir up irritants that can trigger allergies in both humans and dogs. fall can also bring mold which may or may not irritate your pet. It doesn’t matter what breed your dog is, allergies affect all breeds. Inhalant allergies are more common in flat face dogs like bulldogs.

According to Dr. Julie Horton, medical director at the ASPCA Adoption Center, the signs of allergies are most often exhibited by:

  • Scratching
  • Reddened skin or rash particularly on the stomach or paws
  • Excessive paw licking
  • Hair loss
  • Itchy red eyes
  • Ear infections.

According to Pet MD, Allergies can lead to severe, chronic and even painful conditions if left untreated. So make sure to take your dog to the vet if you suspect allergies. Pet medication will help. Do not administer any over the counter pet medication to your dog as they can have toxic affects.

Your  vet may administer prescription shampoo to calm the skin. Some ways to avoid allergens are to clean and vacuum your house frequently. Clean you dog’s bed and blankets frequently.

f you suspect your house may have mold, have a professional out as soon as possible. Mold can be fatal!

I want to also thank iheartdogs.com for also providing some of this very valuable information.

Saving Your Cat From A Fire

Saturday, September 24, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

catrescuefireman_water_hose_md_whtA cat will be more difficult to save during a house fire than a dog. Cats have a tendency to quickly run and hide to get our of danger, They will find places to hide where rescue could be very difficult.  Here are some guidelines that may help save your cat in the event of a fire.

  1. Secure your cat – As soon as your notice that there is a fire in your home, put your cat in a bathroom, closet or his carrier which is the best choice.
  2. Use cat carriers – This is the safest way to transport your cat. Your cat is very emotional. As soon as the commotion starts, they will go into a fight or flight mode. It’s best to have them secure so you can both make a quick getaway.
  3. Grab Your Cats Things – If you have time, grab things like their cat bed, some cat food, litter box, cat scratchers and some other things.
  4. Calming Agents – Bring some things that will calm your cat such as cat toys or cat treats.  Play is the best way to switch a cat for fear mode to something more positive. Giving a cat treat may also help but don’t expect all cats to eat when they are under stress.
  5. Secure Your Cat Again – Once you have arrived at your safe place, tuck your cat into a small room with their things.Cats bond to place as well as people, so having you there with them, talking quietly and using the calming agents, can help them know they’re safe and sound.

Thank to Happy Cat s Haven for providing some of this valuable information.

Introducing Your Dog To A Stranger

Saturday, September 24, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

doghandshakeIf someone you know is coming over but has not met your dog, make sure that you are prepared. Keep your dog on a leash. When the doorbell rings and your dog begins to bark, correct this behavior in a calm but firm way. Because your dog is on is dog leash, you’re in control of the situation. Make sure that you greet the stranger first, then let your dog gently sniff the guest. After awhile, your dog should feel comfortable with the stranger in the house.

If your dog exhibits good behavior, reward him with a dog treat. If he’s calm or even lies down when the stranger is in the room, he deserves a treat.

Keep the meetings with your dog short at first especially if your dog get excited easily. If you are getting the feeling that your dog is getting agitated, take it slow. Remember that he is still on his dog leash and you’re still in control. He may need to stay on his leash for the duration of the visit.  No matter, how anxious your dog is, it’s important that you stay calm., don’t raise your voice and offer encouraging support.

How To Feed A Cat With Cancer

Friday, September 23, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

catvetCats with cancer often lose their appetite and getting them to eat can be a challenge. Without nutritional support, they can lose weight so fast that it is hard for them to recover from the disease. The dietary needs of cats with cancer are not fully understood but experts recommend certain guidelines. Reduce the amount of simple carbohydrate and highly digestible protein in the diet and include more Omega 3 fatty acid. Don’t forget about water, this is most important nutrient. Offer moist cat food that smells great, warm it up and keep the animal’s environment calm and quiet. If your sick cat won’t eat, your veterinarian may suggest pet medications to increase appetite or if that fails, the use of a stomach tube.

Multiple Dogs, One Water Bowl

Friday, September 23, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

two-dogsbowlDogs like to have their own dog food bowls, but do you really need more than one water bowl for more than one dog? What about the germs in each dog’s mouth? Just like humans, dogs have a lot of bacteria in their saliva. Lets not call them all germs because many bacteria serve a useful purpose. Bad bacteria usually gets zapped by acid in the dogs stomach when it swallows. Some diseases that dogs pass along are respiratory. Some are transmitted by fecal contaminants. Dogs with healthy immune systems can safely share one water bowl. Just make sure that you keep plenty of water around. Adult dogs are 60% water and it should stay that way. Make sure you feed you dog quality dog food and don’t forget about dog treats!

Raw Fish Can Be Poisonous to Dogs

Thursday, September 22, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

dogfishYou love to fish and so does your dog. He goes with you on every trip. You’re just getting back to the dock with a good catch of salmon and trout. To reward your dog for being such a good companion, you throw him a fish. Did you know that you may be killing him with your kindness? Salmon poisoning disease found primarily in the northern pacific area of the U.S., and the pacific coast of Canada is often fatal for dogs. Give him a dog treat or some quality dog food instead!  The disease is caused when the dog eats raw salmon or trout contaminated with a parasite that contains the infecting organism. Symptoms usually appear five to seven days later. Look for lack of appetite, fever, vomiting and diarrhea if you suspect that your dog may be infected. Salmon poisoning disease is curable if caught early and the dog is treated with fluids, antibiotics and anti vomiting medication. So instead of throwing him a raw fish, buy him a dog toy instead!

ownerpolderWhen your geriatric cat or dog enters the “golden age of life,” he might slow down but his mind is still active. To help your senior pet stay happy and active, spend more time, not less doing the things he always enjoyed. Cats might not play as vigorously but any activity with you would be a treat. Grooming is always appreciated too. My cat Molly is 17 and she loves to be brushed everyday. It’s something that she actually looks forward to. She sits outside the bathroom door each day and waits until I’m finished with my shower. That’s her brush time. The sound of your voice is also comforting to an older pet. I’m very grateful that I can spend some extra quality time with Molly in her golden years. It’s something that I would never give up!

Keep giving dogs the chance to socialize. Just a slow walk in the park or an organized activity with some of their favorite dog toys will do. Some senior pets may even teach a younger pet some of the wisdom that they learned along the way.

How Much Should You Feed Your Tropical Fish?

Wednesday, September 21, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

fishfiidThe most common problem that new aquarium owner face is overfeeding. This could make the water dirty and cause an increase in ammonia in the water which could put a strain on the filtration system  and cause diseases that could kill your fish.

The frequency and quantity with which you should feed tropical fish is dependant on the amount, species and size of the tropical fish you are keeping. As a general rule, small fish such as guppies, platys and tetras should be fed more often that larger fish. A small pinch two or three times a day should be fine. Don’t feed more that your fish can consume in 3 or 4 minutes.

Larger fish fall into two categories, predatory and non predatory. Large predatory fish like Pike barbs and piranas, should be feed like they would eat if they were in the wild. For such fish once a day or even more infrequently with frozen or dried foods is best. For the largest specialist predatory fish live foods should always be fed because frozen fish or dried food will not contain the correct micronutrients. Non predatory fish should be fed a couple of times a day with frozen or dried foods. Your pet store will carry dry fish food as well as frozen and live food.

Dogs and New Babies

Wednesday, September 21, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

dogbabydog-boaby2If your dog or cat has been your only baby for years, and now you’re bringing home a new baby, you’ll have to prepare your pet. A few weeks before the baby arrives, start spending less time with your pet. Allow him to smell the lotions and powder in the baby’s nursery but don’t let him on the crib or blanket. You can also play recorded baby noises. When your baby comes home, first greet your pet empty handed, then sit in a chair with your baby and cover her head with your hand. Let your pet sniff, but not lick. Before you know it, they’ll be best buddies but never leave the two alone together. Remember to give your pet plenty of attention once your baby is home lots of dog treats, maybe some new dog toys, a long walk wearing his new, trendy dog collar and he will not feel neglected!

Aquarium Lights and Temperature

Tuesday, September 20, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

aquariumOne of the simplest but most important things in maintaining a fresh water aquarium is to keep it at the proper temperature. So what should the water temperature be in a fresh water aquarium? That depends on what type of fish you are keeping.  For typical fresh water fish, the temperature should be between 70 and 78 degrees.  There are some other fish that require higher or lower temperatures. For Beta’s, the temperature should be a little higher, between 75 and 80 degrees. Goldfish should live in water that’s a bit colder, around 68 degrees. Blind cave fish can take temperatures between 63 and 75 degrees.

The key is to keep the temperature consistent. Temperature fluctuations can kill fish or cause diseases. Set the heater at the proper temperature and wait until the water reaches that temperature before adding fish.

As for the lighting, keep the aquarium light on between 10 and 12 hours per day.
