Scooting Dog

Wednesday, July 20, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

dogscootYou’re in the process of making dinner and your guests are about to arrive. Your dog comes into the kitchen and goes for a “scoot.” She sits on her behind and drags her rear across the floor. What does this mean? It means that she’s probably itchy. One of two things may be going on. The most common cause of itchy bottoms in dogs is clogged anal glands. In rare cases, it could be caused by the dog food that you are feeding him. When you dog defecates, her anal glands deposit secretions on the stool. These secretions will help other dogs recognize who your dog is, her age and her gender. Sometimes these glands get clogged and need to be treated by a veterinarian. There is another possible reason for bottom scooting. It could be tape worm. If you notice worm segments that look like long grains of rice in your dog’s feces, bring a stool sample to your veterinarian for testing. There is some pet medication that could help. So don’t ignore that scoot.

Helping Your Overweight Dog With A Diet.

Wednesday, July 20, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

overweightdogSo after procrastinating, you’ve finally decided to put your overweight dog on a diet. Good for you! You are going to prolong his life and restore his health. Then your dog looks up a you with those big brown eyes and begs “please just one little dog treat.” According to one of the veterinarians at Tuft University, now is the time to take action. She suggests that you should look to distract him and reward him with something else other than food. Maybe take him outside for a little extra exercise. Give him a new dog toy. If you are not able to take your dog out at the moment, try giving him a healthy  dog treat. Non starchy vegetables such as celery or carrots are good options but it’s OK reward him only once in a while with beef or chicken treats.

pupvaccinationAs soon as you get your puppy, you should consider getting him vaccinated. His first vaccinations will help him build up immunity to disease. What shots should your puppy get? Most dogs receive the rabies shot as well as combination vaccine called DHLPP. It’s administered as a series of shots and will guard your pup against diseases like distemper, hepatitis, leptosporosis, parainfluenza, and parvo virus. In order to keep his immunity up, your dog will probably get these shots for the rest of his life. Always talk to your veterinarian about what is best for your pet. Your vet may recommend that your adult dog get vaccinated less frequently. Depending on where you live or when you are planning on going with your dog, he may also need to be vaccinated against kennel cough, corona, lyme disease or giardia.

In addition to his vaccinations, make sure your pup is given the proper dog food and lots of exercise and play time. He should have a dog crate, dog water bowl and lots of dog toys to play with.

petadoptRecuing a pet can be one of the most rewarding things that you ever do. Your new pet will change the dynamics in your home in mostly very good ways but some things may be a challenge. Are you ready to accept that challenge? Take shedding for instance, you will have to be prepared to remove pet hair and make sure that you have the proper tools to do so. If you have a good pet comb or pet brush and use them regularly, you will reduce not eliminate the amount of pet hair on your rugs and furniture. You should also pet proof you house or apartment. Put away cleaners, medications and breakables before taking your new pet home. Even if your new pet is housebroken, there will be some accidents. Be prepared with the proper  pet cleaning products. Give your new pets their space. Cats like to hide when in a new environment so provide some comfy cat beds in quiet corners, closets or rooms.  Make sure your new dogs has a dog crate where he’ll feel safe and sound in his new home. Most pets are lactose intolerant which can result in diarrhea or upset stomach. Limit the amount of milk that you feed your pet.

Enjoy your new pet! Pet adoption is a wonderful, fulfilling deed.

dogpartySometimes owning a pet can limit our travel. Choosing  doggie day care could be expensive and maybe you just don’t want to leave your pet alone. Many people choose to stay at home and have a stay cation instead of vacation. Pet Med.com has put together some great, unusual ideas for you and your dog to do during a “stay cation.”

  1. Break out your dog’s inner fashionista for a stay-cation  dog clothing swap. Invite friends and their dogs to your house, and ask them to bring dog clothing, accessories, and dog gear or dog toys they no longer want. Once the party is assembled, everyone can choose fab “new” gear for themselves and their pet! Not only will you and your dog end up dressed to the nines, but you can end the day with a trip to your local shelter to donate what’s left.
  2. Pamper yourself and your dog this stay-cation with a mani/pedi session. Not only will this be a true bonding experience, but both of you will have freshly trimmed nails when you both go back to your normal routines. Just like humans, nail trimming is an essential part of a dog’s grooming routine. However, it’s important to remember that your dog’s nails can be one of his or her most sensitive areas, so try offering reassurance by gently massaging the area before trimming. After the mani/pedi session, follow up with treats for both of you at a dog friendly cafe! There’s nothing wrong with a little TLC on your stay-cation.
  3. Start your dog with a morning class of Doga!  Practice stretching and meditation with other enthusiasts. You don’t have to be a yoga expert to enjoy Doga, it’s a perfect way for both you and your dog to exercise and spend time together. Offered at many traditional yoga studios, Doga classes are fun and are a great bonding experience. Try calling your local studio to find out if classes are offered.
  4. Take your dog  camping at a state park.  Lots of parks may be driving distance. There are lots of things to do with your pet and you can stay overnight if you want to. Make sure you take along plenty of water and don’t forget those dog toys!
  5. If all you have is one day to do whatever you want, make it a movie day — watch movies that feature dogs as the main characters! Your movie choices will depend on the audience, whether you have kids, or you’ll be inviting some friends and their dogs over for a dog-movie party. Some great choices for kids are Beethoven, Lady and the Tramp, Bolt, Space Buddies, and Air Bud. Or you can watch movies that have dogs as supporting cast: There’s Something About Mary,Turner & Hooch, Marley & Me and Hachi: A Dog’s Tale.

Crazy Cat Ladies

Monday, July 18, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

crazycatladyEveryone knows at least one. A crazy cat lady! I knew one many years ago when I worked at Shop Rite in Fort Lee, New Jersey. Every Saturday, the cat lady (as we referred to her) would come in. Even though the cashiers liked her friendly and outgoing personality, we all dreaded that she would come to our register to check out. The cat lady rarely bought people food, she would load her basket with hundreds of  cans of cat food. She had dozens of cats and referred to each one of them as her babies. She would load large bags of dry cat food under her basket and always needed help putting these bags on the counter.

In a situation like this, we may ask ourselves who benefits more the human or the cat? Cats thrives on the constant attention and pampering and the “cat mom” loves the fact that in this cold world, there is at least one creature who will always give her unconditional love. Her cats will  be there for her day-in and day-out, regardless of what society as a whole throws at her. I guess that this is not a bad trade off considering the state of our society. If you’re a”crazy” cat lady, just make sure you have the funds to supply all of those cat treats, cat food, cat beds etc and a very high quality vacuum cleaner!

The Best City For Pets

Sunday, July 17, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

petportlandIf you live in New York City or San Francisco, you’re not in the best city for pets. Apartments in both cities are tiny and there are few dog parks. So what’s the best city for pets? The answer is Portland, Oregon. First of all, it has the largest number of dog parks per capita than any other U.S. city. You have plenty of places to toss those dog toys around.  You can also bring your pet to many places catering to humans. There are 19 pet message therapists in Portland. It’s one of the pet sitting site, Rover.com’s twenty best cities for pets. Portland also has relatively inexpensive veterinary care. Lots of people in Portland take their dogs everywhere because they can. Some restaurants even offer a dog menu. There are also plenty of boutique pet shops that supply the demand for high-quality dog food or cat food  and treats for your pets.

Every park in Portland has a dog zone and being that it rains a lot in Portland, many parks have indoor dog parks.

Your Shy Dog

Sunday, July 17, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

shydogDogs that are shy or wary of strangers have either had a bad experience with people or weren’t well socialized as puppies. Only positive experiences can build up their confidence. If your dog is one of these shy types, you’ll need a good strategy and lots of patience. Arrange to meet a friend when you’re out with your dog. Ask the person to stop and chat but ignore the dog. Don’t talk or even look at him. Wait until you see your dog is relaxed, them give him a dog treat then go on your way. Repeat this exercise often with that friend and others until your dog no longer tenses up in their company. The trick is to notice when your dog relaxes. That’s when you can praise him, pet him and offer treats maybe even buy him a new dog toy. In time, he’ll enjoy the challenge of meeting new people.

Foods That Could Harm Our Pets

Saturday, July 16, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

coffeedogThere are many foods, chemicals or medications that are not harmful to humans but can really harm our pets. Here’s some of them.

Milk – some people think that this is good for cats but actually it can cause them to have digestive problems and cause diarrhea.
Onions – Can destroy a dog’s red blood cells causing anemia.
Chocolate – is lethal for both dogs and cats. Baking chocolate is even more dangerous. Avoid it at all times.
Grapes and Raisins – Can lead to loss of appetite, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea and acute renal failure in dogs causing death.
Coffee – is dangerous to animals. Watch out for grounds that may spill. You don’t want you dog or cat to eat them.
Fatty foods – like chicken or turkey skins or gravy can cause pancreatitis and inflammation of the digestive gland which can be very painful and serious.
Nicotine – this can increase an animals heart rate leading to collapse or even death. Make sure that you do not leave tobacco lying around for your dog to get at!!
Alcoholic beverages – keep these away for animals at all times as they can be very dangerous. Never try to get your dog drunk for laughs. I’ve actually seen some stupid people try to do this!
Always feed you pets healthy foods, dog treats and cat treats. Check the labels for nutrition which we discussed in a previous post.

Begging Dogs

Friday, July 15, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

dogbegIf you’re a dog owner, you’ve probably heard that pitiful “whimper” when you are trying to eat dinner. You’ve seen those big eyes pleading with you to share just one small morsel of your delicious meal. It’s tempting to oblige but don’t give in with food or attention. Rewarding this behavior even once could lead to a chronic begging problem. Eventually, aside from being unhealthy for your pet, it will get rather irritating. Always feed dog treats away from the table. If your dog already begs, give him a comfortable dog bed to lie on and a chew toy for him to keep him occupied while you eat. If that’s not enough to distract him, you may need to confine him to a crate or another room during meal time. Make sure that you feed him early so he’s not hungry during you dinner.
