Happy Fourth, Be Safe with Your Pet

Saturday, July 2, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

fourthdogThere will be lots of grills firing up this weekend and our dogs or cats will be a part of lots of annual 4th of July gatherings. Make sure that your pet stays safe. While grilling, avoid scraps falling on the ground. These are tempting to pets but as we know any sudden change to your pets diet can cause stomach upset. It’s a good idea to give your pet his dog food or cat food before you begin grilling. This way your pet may not be as tempted to steal the scraps. Make sure certain foods like onions, avocado, grapes and raisons are kept out of your pets reach. We love them but they can be toxic to your pet. Keep some dog treats or cat treats on hand to divert your pets attention from anything on your menu!

There will be lots of bugs at your cookout so avoid spraying your pet with insect repellent. Keep your pets away from matches and lighter fluid. They are extremely irritating to the  stomach, lungs and central nervous system if ingested.

Have a safe fourth with your pet!

Martingale Dog Collars

Saturday, July 2, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

dogmartingaleSome dogs such as Greyhounds and Whippets require a Martingale dog collar because of their thin necks and tapered heads. Regular buckle dog collars will slip right over their heads. A Martingale dog collar is a limited slip collar. It has two loops. One large loop which slips over the dog’s head and one smaller loop. The dog leash is attached to a ring on the smaller loop. The collar can tighten the amount of the smaller loop. It can partially tighten but it has a limit. This is why it was given the name, limited slip collar. You can adjust the collar so it slips over your dog’s head. When the collar tightens, the dog cannot slip out of it. The main advantages of this type of collar is that it fits on the dog’s neck and he can’t slip out of it. Once the collar is adjusted, you don’t have to loosen or tighten it every time you put in on your dog.
