The Importance of Doggie Socialization

Sunday, March 7, 2021
posted by Jim Murphy

I once owned a sweet, little Chihuahua but I was younger at the time and was more interested in my social life than my dogs. The fact of the matter is that I did not socialize him. This resulted in a little dog who was afraid of people and other dogs. He would try to nip at anyone who would come into my home. This was very difficult when friends and family visited. He would violently bark at the gas station attendant every time I would stop for gas. He was afraid of other dogs when I would take him to the park. This was not the dogs fault but it was my fault. I wish I could do it over. Now that my dog is gone, I sometimes look back and reflect on ways that I could have made his life better. I learned a lot since then.

All dogs should be socialized,  especially at an early age, get your dog out into the world and expose him to as many things as possible: children, adults, sights, sounds, places and other dogs. One important thing to remember  is that it’s not enough for your dog to see these things but your dog should have positive experiences with each and every one of them. As I described earlier, lack of socialization can cause behavior issues for any type of dog. Also, don’t forget to spend lots of quality time with him.

How Much Dry Food Should You Feed Your Cat?

Saturday, March 6, 2021
posted by Jim Murphy

Many people just throw some dry food in a bowl and leave it out for their cat. Now since dry food will not spoil, it can stay out all day and since most cats are nibblers, it is an appropriate way to feed your cat. The question is how much food should you put out?  Since I have two cats, I use a couple of bowls and place about one handful (maybe a little more) in each bowl. I usually have to thrown some away the next day. Pet Advices.com addresses this question in detail. Here’s an excerpt from the article that I read.

How Much Dry Food Should I Feed my Cat Per Day?

  • Is it safe to free-feed your cat?
  • Is dry food good for the cat’s wellbeing?
  1. The average cat needs around 30 calories for each 450 g (1lb) of body-weight. A cup of dry cat food weighs between 120-130 g and contains between 300 to 500 calories relying upon the brand. Most brands nowadays offer Information with respect to the number of calories the food contains. A few makers likewise put a chart on their packaging now; clarifying the perfect measure of food depends on a cat’s age and weight.
  2. There’s nothing wrong with feeding dry food to your cat if your cat is healthy and you ensure she gets a lot of water. It’s especially important to pick a decent quality food with an elevated level of protein and no grain fillers. Search for a very much detailed dry food with a high protein content (in any event 30%), low fat (under 15 percent), and enriched with extra supplements.
  3. On the off chance that your cat experiences urinary plot issues, you should be especially cautious about the dry food you pick. Luckily, there are specially planned dry nourishments that are made to help a cat’s renal and urinary capacity.
  4. A few people pick dry food since they can free-feed their cats without worrying about food contamination. In contrast to wet food, dry food can be left out for quite a while without the danger that it will turn sour. Except if you have a sensitive cat who is slanted to pace meals, notwithstanding, this is a bad idea. Cats with limitless food access will in general indulge in excess eating and then beg for more food. Temporarily, this can prompt sickness and vomiting. In the more longer-term, free-feeding your cat can bring about sickness and obesity.

Remember always choose a high quality food it really does matter!

Bulldogs, Loving and Loyal

Bulldogs are great companions. Remember that bulldogs and heat don’t mix well. Make sure that he is kept in a cool environment indoors. Make sure he has his dog toys, pet carrier, crate and all of the other essentials. The AKC registers over 140 dog breeds every year and the bulldog is in the top 40 every year!  When buying water bowls for your bulldog, invest in heavy duty stainless steel bowls. They will reduce the rash and redness on your bulldogs face  from the bowls. They can be cleaned easily and are much better than plastic. Bulldogs get along great with children and other pets as  a general rule. They love a nice, soft couch, lots of attention, especially getting their bellies rubbed. They have a great disposition, and will give you and your family lots and lots of love. Bulldogs, unlike other breeds have no cosmetic surgery done such as tail docking and ear cropping. You should always consider getting a microchip implanted when he is young. It is completely painless and will contain all of the pertinent information to track your dog in the event that he gets lost. On a final note, one requirement of the bulldog is that you give them lots of love and attention. They will surely repay you many times over!   Remember, your pets count!

Remembering Molly

Thursday, March 4, 2021
posted by Jim Murphy

It’s hard to believe that  it’s been over two years since we lost our beloved cat Molly. She was with us for 19 years and unlike our cat Atlantis who takes to everyone, Molly had a special bond only with me. That bond was really close. I’m re-posting some memories of Molly to show how close our  little furry friends are to our hearts.

Does your cat have you wrapped around her little paw? My does, in fact they get V.I.P. treatment.  Molly sleeps in my bed every night. I prefer to sleep on one side but my cat , Molly prefers me to sleep on the other side facing her. Here’s how she gets her way. I begin to doze and I suddenly hear Molly”meowing” in my ear insisting that I turn over and face her. Crazy right? If I don’t obey her, she will step onto the night stand and methodically knock over my things. First, my cell phone is knocked out of it’s charger and onto the floor, then my pictures get knocked over one by one. Finally, I give in and turn over. She then snuggles up to me and goes to sleep. She’s purring her little heart out and I’m lying awake unable to fall asleep. This is not Mollie’s fault, it’s my fault for not setting the proper boundaries when she was young. Do you cater to your cat? Remember, cats never forget and will go to extremes to get their way.

A great memory of Molly. Atlantis and Millie do not sleep in our bed but rather have their special sleeping spots in our family room.

Molly had kidney disease and I attribute the five extra years that I had with her to Astro’s Oil. This high potency Omega Oil developed by a doctor in Canada can slow the progress of the disease an improve life quality. It did with Molly and I swear by it. I’m currently using it on my cat Atlantis. He was diagnosed with beginning stage kidney disease but as of last Saturday, his kidney function test came back as normal! Big Dogs in Big Cities

According to Dr. Timothy Mann, a New York City veterinarian, dogs, energy levels and temperament are more important than factors and size. Some large dogs don’t need a big living space if you provide other opportunities Big CItyfor exercise.  He says that St. Bernards and even great  Danes can all live comfortably in the city. The need regular long walks or a run in a dog park. Then, when they come home, they will be content just lying around. Greyhounds will surprise you. They like to run when they have a chance but they are big couch potatoes! Just give them enough exercise outside and they’ll do fine.

st-bernardThere are advantages to having smalls breeds in apartments or condominiums. Some small dogs can even be trained to use a litter box or fake grass on a balcony so you don’t have to worry about rushing downstairs or waiting for the elevator. Apartments are usually too small for a dog exercise pen, so it’s important that you take your little one out often for exercise.

If you add Astro’s Oil to your cats daily regimen especially if he’s been diagnosed with feline kidney , you will add a high quality omega oil and other products that help the kidneys function for longer. This could prolong life and improve the quality of life. Read all about the benefits of Astro’s Oil from their website, Astros Oil.com.

Try Clicker Training for Your New Puppy

Tuesday, March 2, 2021
posted by Jim Murphy

Clicker training is a very effective way to train your puppy. Here’s how it works. It allows your pup to remember doing something right rather than doing something wrong.  Mark that behavior with a click and treat so he associates the sound with doing something right. The clicker simply signals to your pup that he did something right. Then give him verbal praise.

Here’s how to explain the click to your puppy.

  1. Fill a shallow dish with treats.
  2. Get comfortable on the floor with the dish within reach but so the pup can’t access it. Get a treat ready in one hand with the clicker in the other.
  3. Click the clicker when your pups ears twitch or he gets curious and comes to investigate. Immediately give him a treat.
  4. Keep repeating this sequence over and over and always click before giving him the treat.
  5. Very quickly, your pup will look at the treat in your hand as soon as he hears the click.

Once your puppy figures out what the click is all about, you can use it anytime he does something right. Always reward him with a treat and praise. Remember that puppies understand cause and effect very quickly.

Remember, your pets count!
