I once owned a sweet, little Chihuahua but I was younger at the time and was more interested in my social life than my dogs. The fact of the matter is that I did not socialize him. This resulted in a little dog who was afraid of people and other dogs. He would try to nip at anyone who would come into my home. This was very difficult when friends and family visited. All dogs should be socialized,  especially at an early age, get your dog out into the world and expose him to as many things as possible: children, adults, sights, sounds, places and other dogs. One important thing to remember  is that it’s not enough for your dog to see these things but your dog should have positive experiences with each and every one of them. As I described earlier,lack of socialization can cause behavior issues for any type of dog. Also, don’t forget to spend lots of quality time with him.

It’s hard to believe that  it’s been over two years since we lost our beloved cat Molly. She was with us for 19 years and unlike our cat Atlantis who takes to everyone, Molly had a special bond only with me. That bond was really close. I’m re-posting some memories of Molly to show how close our  little furry friends are to our hearts.

Does your cat have you wrapped around her little paw? My does, in fact they get V.I.P. treatment.  Molly sleeps in my bed every night. I prefer to sleep on one side but my cat , Molly prefers me to sleep on the other side facing her. Here’s how she gets her way. I begin to doze and I suddenly hear Molly”meowing” in my ear insisting that I turn over and face her. Crazy right? If I don’t obey her, she will step onto the night stand and methodically knock over my things. First, my cell phone is knocked out of it’s charger and onto the floor, then my pictures get knocked over one by one. Finally, I give in and turn over. She then snuggles up to me and goes to sleep. She’s purring her little heart out and I’m lying awake unable to fall asleep. This is not Mollie’s fault, it’s my fault for not setting the proper boundaries when she was young. Do you cater to your cat? Remember, cats never forget and will go to extremes to get their way.

A great memory of Molly. Atlantis and Millie do not sleep in our bed but rather have their special sleeping spots in our family room.

Clicker training is a very effective way to train your puppy. Here’s how it works. It allows your pup to remember doing something right rather than doing something wrong.  Mark that behavior with a click and treat so he associates the sound with doing something right. The clicker simply signals to your pup that he did something right. Then give him verbal praise.

Here’s how to explain the click to your puppy.

1. Fill a shallow dish with treats.
2. Get comfortable on the floor with the dish within reach but so the pup can’t access it. Get a treat ready in one hand with the clicker in the other.
3. Click the clicker when your pups ears twitch or he gets curious and comes to investigate. Immediately give him a treat.
4. Keep repeating this sequence over and over and always click before giving him the treat.
5. Very quickly, your pup will look at the treat in your hand as soon as he hears the click.

Once your puppy figures out what the click is all about, you can use it anytime he does something right. Always reward him with a treat and praise. Remember that puppies understand cause and effect very quickly.
