We have so many questions regarding the spreading of Coronavirus. Sometimes it can be very overwhelming! Are we doing enough? Are we doing too much?  The American Animal Association answers the question regarding Dogs picking up the virus on their paws. This answer is indicative of New York. So you can determine the right answer for you depending on where you live.

Does the virus stay on the pavement in streets for some time? And if so, should I wash my dogs paws and take my shoes off before entering my apartment? And the second question is, do we need to worry about our pets tracking the virus into the homes? Is wiping my pets enough?

So from a strict hygiene point of view, cleaning your dog’s paws after they’ve walked the streets of Manhattan and cleaning your shoes or taking your shoes off before you come inside, just makes good common hygiene sense. I do know that the virus has been identified on the shoes of healthcare workers taking care of people who are in the hospital with the COVID-19 virus, but that’s completely different exposure than taking your dog for a walk where they’re not lots of people who are really sick walking the streets of New York. So the answer to this question is, we don’t have an answer because we don’t really know enough about the virus in our environment to know if walking on the streets is of any risk to bringing the virus home to family members.

When you determine the appropriate food portions for your dog, you should be able to keep him at approximately the right weight for his size. If you’re concerned that your dog may be  too thin, look at him from above. He should have an hourglass shape from his shoulders to his behind. He should also be well proportioned with muscle covering his hips and shoulder bones. There shouldn’t be any bones protruding from his shoulders, hips and spine.  His ribs should be just barely visible.  Anything more than that may indicate that your dog is under nourished.  If your dog has trouble maintaining it’s weight even though he gets the proper food portions and exercise, talk to your veterinarian because weight loss can indicate a serious health concern.

If you own a cat that doesn’t go outside, you really don’t have to do much to protect yourself from contracting Covid 19. Since pets cannot transmit the virus to humans, we cannot get the virus from pets licking or breathing on us. However, even if you have an indoor cat, always wash your hands as soon as you get home before you pet your feline friend.

Dogs, on the other hand require a little more care for protection.

First, try to stay at home with your pets, reduce the time and frequency for walks. For active pets like dogs, if you need to walk them, be sure to wear your face mask and do not go to public places like parks. When you are out, keep your dog away from trash and stray animals in case they might carry virus.

Second, clean your pet using 75 percent isopropyl alcohol after going home. Remember to wipe their feet and belly, and spray their fur. After cleaning pets, wash your hands carefully.
Pets can provide us much comfort during this crisis. Lets all make sure we are safe and take the proper precautions to protect ourselves and our pets.

The Beautiful Persian

According to the Cat Fanciers Association, the Persian is the most popular pedigreed cat breed in the United States. It could be it’s long, beautiful coat that makes everyone love it or maybe it the Persian’s playful personality. It’s also quite and easy going and most Persians readily adapt to new households and accept other pets. This makes the breed relatively easy to care for. Persians do require extra grooming.  Their large eyes are prone to tearing and infection so a Persians eyes and face should be kept clean. The breeds long fur can also become matted so they should be brushed daily. Persians are a pleasure to own and all the extra care is worth it!

As We Self Isolate, Our Pets Get More Spoiled

Wednesday, April 1, 2020

Our two cats love the fact that we are home almost all of the time now. They get more hugs and even treats. As the days pass, they seem to know what to expect and the time something has to be done. Our cat Atlantis gets his medication every morning about the same time. It’s a complicated process. I put him on the counter, five him a hairball control product which he licks off of my finger. I then give him about 1.5 ML of a high potency omega oil. Then comes the ear cleaning. I swab his ears with baby wipes This is necessary to remove the buildup from medicine that goes into his ears everyday. The last part of the process is to apply medication for his thyroid inside his ear. This is a cream that goes in very easily.

At first, Atlantis would do anything to hide from this “dreaded” process but now he actually waits in the kitchen for me to lift him up, put him on the counter and administer his meds. It’s funny how they can get used to a steady routine even if it’s not a pleasant one.

Millie expects to be brushed as soon as I get out of the shower. She is sitting by the bathroom door waiting for me to get her brush out. She then jumps on the bed and waits for her daily brush.

One thing that is not so good is now they both expect more treats. Millie will wait by her bowl and meow for treats and as soon as I put some treats in the bowl, Atlantis who doesn’t miss a trick jumps up and starts meowing for his treats. This cycle goes on for several hours throughout the evening. I always give in to their habit and feel like a ” jumping jack” from getting up all the time.

Our pets provide us with lots of love and affection especially during this very difficult time.
