What Do You Do if A Dog loses a Tooth

Wednesday, October 5, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

dogteethIt’s not unusual for a dog to break a tooth chewing on a hard bone or dog toy. Jerry Ann Holsman, a certified veterinary technician at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine says that the important thing to remember is that a fractured tooth is likely very painful so it needs to be taken care of right away. The sooner that you can get your dog to a veterinarian, the sooner his tooth can be saved with a root canal or another procedure. If the tooth is beyond repair, your veterinarian will likely remove it. Don’t worry if there is a whole in his “smile” because dogs can get along fine without a few teeth. I’m sure that your dog prefers comfort and well being over vanity. Watch out for those rawhide bones, they can do damage and break your dogs teeth!

How to Treat Joint Conditions in Dogs

Tuesday, October 4, 2022

Does your pet have a bad shoulder, knee or elbow? If this is the case your vet may refer you to an Arthroscopic Surgeon. Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive way to diagnose and treat a variety of joint conditions. It involves making very tiny incisions into your pets joint. One incision allows a surgeon to insert surgical instruments and another will allow an arthroscope to be inserted. This is a tiny telescope with a light. Dr. John Payne of the Pittsburgh Veterinary and Emergency Center says that the arthroscope allows the surgeon to view the joint and see everything that’s going on. He also says that the incisions are so small that infections after surgery are very rare. After surgery, you should see an improvement in your pets condition. Your vet will prescribe any pet medication that may be necessary.

Positive Ways to Train Your Dog

Do you shout “no” when your dog does something wrong?  A kinder and more pro- active way  to train your dog is to teach him to do what you want before he does something wrong. Here’s an example. You can teach him to lie down instead of beg before dinner time.  Paul Owens promotes this kind of training in his book called “The Dog Whisperer.”  He says that most people that have a dog enter into a relationship where they become re-active instead of pro- active.  Don’t wait for your dog to do something wrong but rather train him to do what you want. You will be glad you did. Somethings that you may consider is training him not to pull on his leash, or not to jump on strangers. Whatever you do, never put him in his dog carrier or crate as punishment. This is the worst thing that you could do. He will not only continue to disobey you but he will associate his crate or carrier with punishment!

Our hearts go out to the people of south Florida after they experienced one of the worst hurricanes in Florida’s history. I’m sure many innocent pets are included in the amount of casualties that will continue to climb in the coming days. First Responders continue to save the lives of so many in south Florida. I get a sick feeling in my stomach when I hear that a family has been saved but their beloved pet was lost. Our pets are part of our family and I’ve heard of many who stayed behind because they didn’t want to leave their pets. Channel 5 News in south Florida issued this report on the progress of this massive rescue mission. Please continue to pray for the people and pets stranded in south Florida.

As hundreds of people are being rescued across Florida in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian, pets are not being forgotten.

The U.S. Coast Guard documented a rescue of two people and three cats. They were stranded around Sanibel, Florida, on Thursday.

Sanibel is one of the hardest-hit areas. It’s connected to the mainland by a causeway, which was destroyed.

Pets are among the top priority in other parts of the state. In Orange County, officials guided people and their pets through floodwaters.

Prior to the storm, Florida Urgent Rescue said it evacuated 49 cats and dogs from rural Florida shelters. The goal was to make room for stray animals as a result of the storm.
