Are you planning a trip soon? You know that you are placing a lot of responsibility in the hands of your pet sitter. You’re trusting this person to care for your precious pet while you’re gone.  You should help the sitter out by preparing your home properly. Start by doing an inspection of your home. Make sure that cleaning supplies and other materials that may be toxic to your pet are locked up.  Put poisonous plants out of reach. Lock outdoor gates and turn on any outside lights. In addition to leaving detailed contact information and detailed feeding and exercise instructions, make sure that you tell you pet sitter about any unusual circumstances like a door that doesn’t shut or a sink that doesn’t drain.  Make sure you tell the sitter where your pet supplies like pet food, dog leashes, dog water bowls and pet medication are kept. These small preparations will ensure the well being of your pet and will help ease your mind while you’re away.

Finally, the time has come for you and your new puppy to go on his first walk. You spend lots of time choosing his new,”trendy” looking dog leash, now it’s time to show him off. Unfortunately, your puppy does not care about how he looks in that really “cool” dog leash but rather cares about trying to get out of it! Here are a few tips that may help you out.

1. Encourage your puppy to follow you instead of heading for everything that is around him.

2. Take some treats with you and always keep a few in your hand. When you call your puppy and he comes to you, reward him with a treat.

3. Always praise your puppy when you give a treat. Continue walking and praising as you go. Make sure you walk slow, encouraging your puppy to follow you along the way.

4. Stand still if your puppy pulls the wrong way on the leash. Do not pull you force him to walk. Just stop and wait for him to realize that he is going the wrong way. Call him and when he comes, reward him with another treat.

5. Keep the dog leash loose when walking your puppy. Do this only if he is walking beside you not sitting down or pulling you. It ‘s a good idea to take a squeeky toy with you to get his attention every now and then.

Remember be patient. Dog training is a process requiring lots of repetition and praise. Never yell or hit your dog for not obeying. This is not only cruel but will prevent your dog from learning to walk on a leash properly.

Owners Stupidity Almost Cost Dog His Life

Do you ever notice after a light changes to green that car in front of you doesn’t budge. This infuriates me because I know that the person in that car is too busy looking at his phone to realize that the light has changed. I usually react with a long horn honk!  Horrible things happen when people are on their phones while driving.

One day, a few months ago, a man was driving with his pet dog in the car. He had his iPad turned on and was looking at it while he was driving. He glanced down and the next thing he new was that he hit the car in front of him. The airbags engaged and hit the man and his Golden Retriever who was in the front seat. The dog freaked out and jumped out the window into oncoming traffic. The owner tried to chase him but lost the dog as he darted through traffic on the busy streets.

Fortunately, a couple found the dog and brought him to a vet who scanned his chip. The owner got the dog back but he was severely injured. The dog made a full recovery. The owner can’t forgive himself and now puts all of his devices in the trunk.  This is a little too late since he caused his beloved pet so much injury.

Don’t be stupid! I see so many people driving and talking on the phone, texting etc. You are not only putting yourself at risk but are risking the life of others including our pets! Is it worth it?? Be safe, not stupid!!

Do you sometimes find your cat throwing up his food shortly after eating it? The other day, I almost stepped in the mess in my hallway. It looked like a pile of undigested dry food and usually is tied to your cat eating too fast. My cat Atlantis will gobble down a bunch of dry food at one time while our other little feline friend, Millie, takes her time a grazes throughout the day.

So is there anything we could do to slow out cats eating habits down? Actually there is. Your pet store may sell a special cat bowl that is designed to slow your cat down while eating. The bowl can contain a design to stop your cat from gobbling down  food too quickly.  Your cat will thank you and you won’t find those little “surprises” scattered around your house.

Monitor your cat’s eating for a few days to make sure he’s using the new bowl.

When Your Dog Gets Bitten

Thursday, April 1, 2021

Even though your pet enjoys the outdoors, he may tread on dangerous ground. You decide to take your dog camping with you. He loves being out in the woods or field but poisonous snakes can go with the territory. Dr. Fred Omi, a Veterinarian at Kansas State University says that not all snake bites are alike. He says that only half of the bites given to dogs or cats by snakes are injections of venum. The rest are called “dry” bites where the snake bites but does not inject the venim into the dog or cat. Don’t overreact but never ignore your pets snakebite. Don’t attempt to administer pet medication yourself. See your veternarian right away, he will determine whether the bite needs further treatment.
