One of the first responsibilities of  pet owners is to protect them.  That means making sure that they don’t get lost.  There are many ways that a beloved pet can go missing.  This can happen if  friend or neighbor leaves a back door open or a dog escaping from the back of a car when the door is open. The list can go on and on.  We must cover all of our bases. First and foremost make sure your pet is wearing a collar containing all of his contact information. Name, Address, phone number and even email address.  It shouldn’t stop there. Take your pet to the vet and have him micro chipped.  It’s a simple process where a small chip containing all of your pets information is inserted under his skin. If your pet is found, a vet can scan him and get all of the information is one split second. The process is very quick and painless and it’s certainly well worth it.

Take the time and make sure that you give your pet the best chance of returning to his loving home if he gets lost.

Positive Reinforcement is Essential

Positive reinforcement is the single most popular method for teaching dogs to obey human commands. Harsh punishment and intimidation are more than inhumane – they create a suspicious, fear-based relationship between owner and pet. On the other hand, rewarding a dog with a treat or a scratch on the back provides incentive for him to repeat that behavior in the future.

Bear in mind that most dogs are food-driven, and they will do whatever it takes to chomp on some dog treats. Once you’ve found the type of treat – whether it’s rawhide bones or a chewable bite – that appeals to your dog, use it as the go-to reward. Since dogs don’t have the same ability to associate actions with consequences well after the fact, you should reward good behavior immediately.
