Are you looking for a new career. Are you an animal lover? Then why not become a Veterinary Technician?  Maybe at some point you wanted to be a Veterinarian but the amount of college required held you back. Eight years of college is required to become a Veterinarian.  A Veterinary Technician works in both private and public clinics, in labs, on farms and even in classrooms.  Some of the things that they are responsible for are preparing animals for surgery and performing routine pet exams. The Veterinary Technician monitors a pets vital signs, takes X rays and also performs some dental hygiene processes.  A large part of their job is to educate people on the best way to care for their pets.  In most states a Veterinary Technician career requires a two year program.  You’ll also have to pass a national board exam. This could be a very gratifying career as it combines the love of animals with medicine and with people. So maybe you’re thinking of a career change. You love your pets and are constantly pampering them with long walks, dog  treats and lots of toys. Why not become a Veterinary Technician? It could be the best move you’ve ever made!

Pets Banded From Restaurants in Delaware

Sunday, August 18, 2019
posted by Jim Murphy

A new law recently went into affect banning pets from restaurants in Delaware. Now is this a good or bad thing? First of all in today’s society, we love our pets and treat them like family. Pets go along almost everywhere with us. I can understand that if everyone brought there dogs in a restaurant, chaos would occur. Service dogs are an exception to the rule. Banning our furry friends from outside dining with their family may be another story. Many restaurants used to  allow pets in outside areas but that will now not be allowed in Delaware. This may not sit well with many residents. It’s great to be able to take your dog out with you and stop and have a bite to eat without having to leave him in an unsafe car.

I think that pets should be allowed if restaurants offer outside dining provided that they are well trained and get stay calm while in a crowded area. There can be a designated seating area where our furry friends may be welcome . After all would like to leave your child or baby at home? What do you think?

My Talkative Siamese

Our Atlantis

You may not know  that Siamese cats are very talkative. They will meow to interact with humans and that meow will continue until their need is fulfilled. Our cat Atlantis, meows as soon as we come home. He comes over to greet us like a dog would and either whats something to eat or to be pet. The meow continues in various tones for awhile. Siamese cats are more talkative than most other breeds. We love this interaction. It shows that he is happy and enjoys human interaction. We also have another cat Millie who is not Siamese and she doesn’t meow much but when we pet her, she will let out some soft meows as a sign of pleasure.

Enjoy the interaction with your feline friends. Remember cats will only meow to humans because  they know that we are special and can provide for their every need.

Hurricane Season is Here, Are You Prepared?

Friday, August 16, 2019
posted by Jim Murphy

It’s hurricane season and make sure that you remember your pets when making disaster emergency plans!  If you have to evacuate because a hurricane threatens the area in which you live, don’t forget about your cat or dog. Keep his pet carrier in a convenient place in case you have to get out fast.  The instincts of your pet cannot be counted on to survive a disaster.  Pack at least one weeks supply of pet food and always remember your pets leash. Make sure that you have the proper ID tags clearly visible on your pet.  If you must go to a hotel or shelter, ask if it’s OK to bring your pet.  It is very important that you don’t wait until the last minute to evacuate. Rescue officials may not let you take your pet. Keep up to date on all of the weather conditions and evacuate sooner rather than later. If you have no choice but to leave your pet home, make sure that he has a  current ID and a secure collar. Take a picture of your pet with you just in case he gets lost. I cannot emphasize it enough that your pets are a part of your family. Plan ahead and make sure they are included in your disaster plans.

Remember, your pets count!

Pay Attention to Your Cat’s Teeth

Thursday, August 15, 2019
posted by Jim Murphy
It is important to pay attention to your cat’s mouth and symptoms of possible issues.  Wagwalking.com has composed a list of things to watch out for when it comes to your cat’s teeth.
  • Bad breath
  • A lot of saliva
  • Bleeding gums or gums that are red and swollen
  • Receding gums
  • Plaque on his teeth (plaque is white and soft and able to be removed from his tooth)
  • Tartar on his teeth (this is where plaque has become harder and will need to be removed by your veterinarian)
  • A cracked tooth or teeth diminished
  • Loss of appetite
  • Loss of weight
  • Pawing at his mouth (this may point to pain in his mouth)

If you notice any of these signs and/or your cat loses a tooth, you will want to schedule an examination with your veterinarian. Your veterinarian will conduct a physical examination, paying close attention to your cat’s mouth and teeth. Should there be plaque present, your veterinarian can clean your cat’s teeth to avoid problems in the future. If your veterinarian determines that there is an infection present, he may prescribe an antibiotic. Depending upon the examination, your veterinarian may consider radiography in order to see if any teeth need to be extracted. This may be necessary if the infection has spread so that your cat can avoid developing a generalized infection. Filings may be an option for teeth that have cracked. All dental treatments will be conducted under anesthesia. It is important for your cat to receive treatment as any bacteria involved in dental disease can make its way through his bloodstream and infect his heart, kidneys and liver.

Thanks to Wagwalking.com for providing this valuable information.

Dog Treats How Many, How Often?

Wednesday, August 14, 2019
posted by Jim Murphy

You should give your dog treats every now and then.  Dog treats reinforce that special bond between you and your dog.  They help with training and reinforcing positive behavior. When you select a treat for your dog, consider how many treats that you’ll give him, his age, health, allergies and overall preferences.  Treats should consume no more than 10% of your dog’s diet.  Puppies prefer smaller treats and senior dogs with chewing problems would prefer softer treats.

Treats should not affect your dog’s eating habits. They should be given when the dog does something good or between meals. This will prevent him from  begging for table scraps which could cause him to gain weight.  Table scraps can also cause picky eating habits and contribute to digestive problems.

If you’re using the treat for training purposes, choose a small treat that your dog could consume  quickly.   Natural treats are high in protein and may be a good choice for health purposes. Rawhide is good for the teeth but can cause choking in some cases. Ask your vet which treats would be best for your type of dog.

A Cat Food Guide For Kidney Disease

Tuesday, August 13, 2019
posted by Jim Murphy

If your cat is diagnosed with Kidney disease, a change of diet is usually required. That can be a daunting task since cats can be very fussy eaters. Low phosphorus is key in foods for Kidney disease. Unfortunately, many brands don’t list phosphorus levels. Royal Canaan and Hills are a couple of the main brands that vets prescribe for cats with kidney disease. The problem is many cats don’t like this food. Are there any alternatives? I fed my cat Weruva which does contain lower phosphorus levels.

I always used Tanya’s Comprehensive guide. It’s very detailed and contains lots of information about Feline Kidney disease. Indicated below is an excerpt listing various cat foods and nutritional information.

  1. Hi-Tor Neo
  2. Dave’s Pet Food Restricted Diet Protein Phosphorus This food contains alfalfa, presumably because it is thought that alfalfa may support the kidneys. However, alfalfa contains a natural anticoagulant which may increase the risk of bleeding. The Veterinary Support Personnel Network states that alfalfa is toxic to cats. This food also contains parsley and dandelion, which are diuretics and thus not recommended for CKD cats. It is also not clear if this food has increased amounts of essential fatty acids, which are recommended for CKD cats.
  3. Forza10 Renal Active Contains some questionable ingredients such as dandelion (diuretic) and cranberries, neither of which is recommended for CKD cats.

Here are lists of the composition of the various diets available on a dry matter analysis basis (the calories are as fed):

How To Handle a Crushing Lap Dog

Sunday, August 11, 2019
posted by Jim Murphy

When your dog was a little puppy, you probably  enjoyed  having him sit on your lap. Your dog is now grown and still jumps up and wants to sit on your lap. Of course, your lap is not the perfect place for an adult dog. You must stop this behavior in its tracks before lap sitting  becomes a regular, life long habit. You probably want to treat your lap like any other piece of furniture where dogs are not allowed.  Hopefully, your puppy is learning the “off” command.  As many times as it takes, firmly say “off” and give your pup a little help getting down.  The floor is perfectly fine for dogs.  When he gets off your lap, and lies on the floor, praise him and give him a dog treat. This will quickly change his mind and he will quickly watch TV with you on the floor instead of on your lap.

The Best Way to Apply Hairball Medicine

Saturday, August 10, 2019
posted by Jim Murphy

We’ve been talking about the new member of my family and his problem with hairballs. Atlantis, our long haired cat has been vomiting up hairballs recently. I administered hairball medicine which is a fish flavored gel. At first I was trying to get him to lick it off of my finger but that didn’t work so I smeared it on his mouth. Well, that went over very badly. Atlantis clearly was very displeased and retreated to a corner. I felt so bad  but I needed to take care of his hairball problem.

The next day I applied the medication to his paw and voila, this solved the problem. He licked it off and didn’t get upset at all. So far, he has not had another hairball. I will administer the medication for another day or two then give it to him once a week for maintenance. I would recommend putting a gel based hairball medicine on your cats paw. This way you’ll stay on his good side!

When a dog’s prostate becomes enlarged, it becomes a target for cysts and infections. You can tell whether or not your dog has a problem with his prostate. He will strain to urinate or he could have blood in his urine.  If his case is severe, he could become very ill or even collapse. Prostate disease is most common in non neutered dogs.  Even so,  all male dogs should be examined annually for prostate disease especially if the dog is a little older. Your vet will determine whether the prostate is the appropriate size and in the right position and whether it’s irregular or smooth. If your vet finds any abnormalities, pet medication, surgery or neutering may be recommended to correct the problem.
