I have to say kudos to those great people who choose to adopt an older dog and give them a wonderful life in their “winter years.” When we adopt a pet, we quickly establish a bond of unconditional love and expect that this bond will last quite awhile. There are so many wonderful older dogs that would love to be taken in and given a chance for a better life in their later years.

I have a neighbor who adopts older Irish setters. She had two older Irish Setters in which she took care of and gave them that special touch making their waning years happy and pleasant. Unfortunately recently both of these wonderful pets crossed over the rainbow bridge. It is very tough on pet owners when they lose a pet at any age.  Adopting an older pet takes a special kind of person, someone who provides unconditional love yet realizes that their new friend may not be with them very long. We need more people like this.

If you want to adopt an older pet, make sure you have all of the information about the pet including detailed medical history. It is also a good idea if you don’t have very young children. I say this for a couple of reasons, first of all young children can be rough on pets  especially older pets with medical conditions. The second reason is that young children require most of your attention taking away quality time that you can spend with your aging pet.

Finally, a thank you to all of the special people out their who adopt older pets and give the love and care they deserve in their final stages of life!

Taking Your Pet Out In Style

Yesterday, while walking on the boardwalk in Rehoboth Beach, I noticed lots of dogs walking with their owners in the early evening. I can across a small Pomeranian nestled in a doggie stroller with a little bowl of food, some water and a net to keep the bugs out. It was very cool and the little pet looked like he was enjoying the walk with his family. There are many ways to make your pet comfortable these days. Instead of leaving him home alone, take him with you when you can. I’m sure you and your pet will enjoy being together.

You can going to various pet websites, Petco, Petland etc.  to find different kinds of pet strollers to ensure that your best friend is cool and comfy during his family outing!

Be Careful With Table Scraps

Only a very rare dog will turn down a delicious, juicy table scrap but should you really feed your dog things that you can’t eat?  Lets consider some of the problems with feeding your dog table scraps.  You may say that you’ll watch for bones right? Well maybe. Lots of small bones can get mixed into table scraps. You’ll also watch for things that dogs can’t eat like chocolate. You may know this but does a friend that might be coming for dinner?  If you do feed your dog table scraps, they should be a small, measured amount along with a balanced diet of regular dog food. It all adds up and you don’t want an overweight dog begging at the table. If given sparingly, a nutritious table scrap every now and then is probably OK, it could even be a reward in your training routine.  Sit, stay, good dog and enjoy that great tasting piece of chicken!

Missing Millie

My cat Millie is a very routine little girl. She does things precisely the same time every day. She get us when I get up at 8:00am, she gets her food at 8:15am, she sleeps on top of the sofa in the sun room in the morning, she gets brushed as soon as I get out of the shower, she then retires to the back bedroom for her afternoon nap. She gets her snack every night at 7:00 pm. Millie is a house cat and never goes outside. She doesn’t even like to sit on the porch anymore.

Yesterday after watering the plants on the porch, I came inside to do some work on the computer. About 11:00 am my partner, asked me where Millie was. I said I didn’t know so we began to search the house. We looked in all of her usual places, under beds, in closets, in cabinets,,,,,everywhere but couldn’t find her. I began to panic. She was no where to be found! It was pouring outside and I couldn’t imagine that she could have gotten out. I looked on the porch twice and called her….no Millie.

The third time I searched the porch, there was Millie, apparently upset, she darted inside…she was now back in her ” safe place.”  I didn’t see her the two times I checked on her and she wasn’t wet so she must have been somewhere on the porch.

Losing a pet is a very stressful experience and being that Millie never likes to go outside, this was particularly disturbing. Cats do things for different reasons. I just felt bad that she was trapped outside for over 3 hours. We’re just glad to have her back and are now very careful to check on her every time we go in and out!
