Cats Communicate with Their Eyes

Reclining cat pinches an eye

If you stare at your cat and blink, there’s a good chance that she will blink back. I believe that one way that cats communicate is with their eyes. In shelters, if you blink very slowly at a feral cat, it usually calms them down. Cats can use their eyes to intimidate prey or even each other. When my cat Mollie sits and stares at my younger cat Millie, Millie will dash across the room and hide. Cats have excellent peripheral vision. You get up at night and are stumbling for the light switch but your cat is navigating around the furniture and enjoying her cat food without any problem. They have vertical irises and excellent night vision. Sometimes my cat will start to pounce on the floor. I see nothing but they see a tiny bug moving very fast through the carpet. We may have better color vision, but cats can detect motion much better than us. Cats also have a third eyelid which protects their eyes as they stalk prey under branches and underbrush. This eyelid is on the inside corner of the eye.

It’s not completely certain which colors a cat can see best but cats do have beautiful eyes and many times people will choose a cat based on the color of their eyes. So why is your cat so good at catching that bug or cat toy? That’s because of it’s excellent eyesight and ability to detect motion much better than humans.

How Much Should You Feed Your Cat?

Cat eating his food from ceramic bowl on wooden floor

Most people including myself overfeed our cats. We think that they’re going to gobble down bowls of dry food at a time. Wrong! Cats are nibblers and their requirements may surprise you! Hepper.com has put together a chart to guide you.

You can calculate how much food your cat needs based on its weight. Your cat’s ideal healthy weight will determine how many calories they need a day. An adult cat requires about 25 calories per pound of body weight. An 8 oz cup of dry food averages about 500 calories. So, if we estimate that the average ten-pound cat needs about 250 calories per day, the average cat will need about 1/3–1/2 of a cup of food, maybe less if your cat is particularly lazy.

I always add a little extra. You never know if you’re called away unexpectedly.

Abandoned dogs in the kennel, homeless dogs behind bars in an animal shelter.Sad looking dog behind the fence looking out through the wire of his cage

A very sad and cruel story about pet adoption.

There were 2 little girls in a family and their mother lets them adopt a puppy and kitten every six months or so. The cruel, heartless mother then decides that she can’t take care of the animals anymore and takes them back to the shelter. She does this when the girls are at school! She hurts both the girls and the poor innocent animals! This situation has happened at least two or three times in the past few years. In addition to the pain that she causes the girls after they get attached to the pets, the animals are in pain too because they also get attached to their new home. Shelters allow pets to be returned but no shelter should continue to let someone adopt who has a history of relinquishing animals back after a few weeks. Shame on this selfish, inconsiderate, cruel mother. Are people really going crazy????!!!!!
