The Meanings of Your Dog’s Bark

Sunday, July 8, 2018
posted by Jim Murphy

Did you know that they type of bark that your dog gives, in an indication of what they are trying to communicate to you. Here are some kinds of barks and what they mean.

  • Continuous fast barking at a medium pitch – This indicates a problem like a stranger entering the house or yard.
  • Continuous slow barking at a low pitch – The intruder is close by.
  • Fast barking with pauses every three or four seconds – He is warning you that there is an approaching problem and he wants you to investigate.
  • Long, drawn out barks at a high pitch with pauses in between – He is lonely and needs your company.
  • One or two high pitched barks – This is a normal greeting
  • One bark at a normal pitch – He is alert and curious.
  • Short back in a high pitch – He is showing you surprise. If he repeats it twice, he’s saying ” hey look at this.”
  • Brief bark at a medium pitch – He is happy.
  • Faltering Bark at a medium– he wants to play with you or his dog toys.
  • Howl or short bark with high pitch – This indicates pain.
  • Repeated howls at regular intervals – He is in extreme pain and need immediate attention. This may also indicate that something is really scaring them.
  • High pitched barks that sound desperate without any reason – He is just probably letting off some steam.

Pay attention to your dog’s barks. He is speaking to you and you should know what he is trying to tell you!

How To Tell If Your Cat is Really Sick

Saturday, July 7, 2018
posted by Jim Murphy

Sometimes my 13 year old cat Millie is running around the house like crazy, other times she is quietly lying in the bedroom and really not moving around at all. There are times I may think that she’s not feeling well. Cats are funny creatures, they tend to hide their ailments pretty well. There are other things to look for to tell whether or not your cat is just being a lazy cat or is really sick. First of all is she doing the things she normally does? Millie loves to be brushed every time I get out of the shower. She sits by the bed and waits or meows telling me that it’s time. Is she drinking and eating normally? Is she using her litter box? Pet MD has also put together a list of things that you should look for to determine if your feline friend needs some medical care.

Overall, you’ll want to look for any changes in your cat’s normal routine or behavior. Any abrupt change that lasts for more than a few days may be an indicator of a more serious issue. Watch out for the following changes:

  • Decreased Movement: although many cat owners will attribute a decrease in activity to old age, it can actually be a sign of arthritis or other ailments, said Michelle Newfield, DVM at Gause Boulevard Veterinary Hospital in Slidell, Louisiana. If your cat is not jumping up on counters or running around after a toy like she used to, she may be experiencing joint pain.
  • Changes in Grooming Habits: if your cat suddenly stops grooming herself, take note, as an unkempt coat and poor grooming habits can be indicative of thyroid disease or a sign of poor health. You’ll also want to look for excessive itching or licking in addition to shedding or hair loss, says Christina Chambreau, DVM and associate editor of the Integrative Veterinary Care Journal. A dry, oily or lack-luster coat also can be a sign of larger issue.
  • Unusual Bowel Movements: Large or more frequent stools can be a sign of an internal disease or issue, Newfield said. Bloody stools should also be addressed immediately.
  • Changes in Attitude or Behavior: if your older cat starts acting spunkier, don’t rejoice too quickly, as over-active behavior might be a sign of hyperthyroidism, Newfield said. Additionally, if your cat is suddenly fearful, overly timid or rough, or you notice any major change in behavior, those also can be signs of a problem, Chambreau said.
  • Increased Hairballs or Vomit: unless the hairballs your cat coughed up are comprised completely of hair, chances are high that your cat actually vomited, Newfield said. Vomiting repeatedly can mean your cat has heartworm or other ailments.

If you think your cat may be sick. Don’t wait, take her to the vet for a checkup. It may be a very important visit!

How to Check Your Dog For Ticks

Thursday, July 5, 2018
posted by Jim Murphy

Where should you be checking your dog for ticks, and how often? According to the Pet Health Network you should check your pet;

  • Between the toes
  • Inside the ears and  around the ear folds
  • Under the chin and neck area
  • Groin and armpits

Really any places that look like good hiding spots probably are! Remember to always part the hair as much as you can to get the deepest and closest look. You should be checking your pup any time she could have come into contact with parasites, especially after outdoor activities such as hiking or swimming.

Keep yourself and your pet safe during this summer season.

Several Theories on Dogs Eating Grass

Wednesday, July 4, 2018
posted by Jim Murphy

Does it surprise you when you notice your dog eating grass? This is not unusual behavior. Many dogs like to nibble on greens from time to time yet veterinarians are not sure why.  Some believe that it’s a normal part of a dogs diet because in the wild, dogs eat all of their prey including the plants in the intestines.  Another theory suggests that it could be a sign of fiber deficiency.  Some found that changing a dogs diet, helps end the grass grazing habit.  Because dogs usually vomit after eating grass, another theory suggests that by eating grass, they are cleaning out their stomachs when they are feeling ill. We may never know exactly why dogs eat grass,  but unless your dog is vomiting frequently, there’s probably no reason to worry.  Don’t buy grass for him to nibble on like you would a cat but rather keep a good supply of dog treats on hand and make sure he’s on a well balanced diet.

The Energetic Mini Dachshund

Tuesday, July 3, 2018
posted by Jim Murphy

A miniature Dachshund may be small but he has plenty of energy. Along with long walks, you can help train his energy with some lively games. There’s nothing more enjoyable for your mini dog than playing fetch. Retrieving balls and squeaky toys is his idea of nirvana. It is also a good opportunity for you to teach him the command “drop it.”  He also likes to play “tug” but make sure it’s not too rough and you are the one who starts and ends the game.  Playing hide and seek with him is also fun as long as he already knows how to sit.  Try teaching him a few new tricks like “hi five” or “take a bow.”  If you take the time to play with your mini Dachshund, he will have a fit mind and body. It will also keep him more relaxed and happier. He will really enjoy sleeping in his dog bed at the end of a long day of play!

Hydration is the Key Today For Our Pets

Monday, July 2, 2018
posted by Jim Murphy

This is the time of year that we need to keep hydrated. The forecast on Delmarva today  95 inland and  heat indices of 105 degrees. I went outside to water the plants this morning and my glasses steamed up. If your pets go outdoors, it is key that they have access to water. Keep a filled water bowl outside. If you’re taking your dog to the park, take a bottle of water and a bowl and allow him to drink often. Dogs can suffer from heat stroke like humans. Limit the time outdoors today. Take your dog for shorter walks and if he shows signs that the heat is affecting him like panting, heavy breathing etc. Take him inside immediately, give him plenty of water and apply cool compresses.

Use common sense during this extreme heat. Think about your pets as well as yourself!

Tick Season is Here

Sunday, July 1, 2018
posted by Jim Murphy

Ticks present a unique problem for people who make their home in a wooded area. The issue is further compounded for pet owners. By their very nature, dogs are curious animals that seek to explore the territory around their home. In some cases this can mean picking up a few unwanted passengers. The best way to circumvent this problem is to invest in plenty of flea and tick spray.

In the event that you forget to take precautionary measures, it may become necessary to remove a wood tick from your dog’s skin. Although the process is never pleasant, it’s relatively straightforward. Begin my donning a pair of rubber gloves and taking out a pair of tweezers. Wrap the tweezers around the tick’s head and pull firmly in a straight-out motion. Do not make a twisting motion, or the tick’s head may remain lodged in the skin.
