Feral and Stray Cats , Is There a Difference?

Monday, February 7, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

We have several cats that we leave food for each day on our porch. Two cats will run if they just see a human, they will only come to our porch and eat their food if there is absolutely no one around.  We have one cat who will actually wait by our door for her food each morning. Today I found her sitting on the couch out on our porch this morning. I came out with the food, she got up, greeted me and meowed. I put her food down and gave her a pet and came back inside.

Feral cats have never had contact with humans therefore they will not meow when they see them, or have any contact whatsoever. A stray cat may have a home somewhere else and basically lives outdoors or they may have been abandoned after their owners died or moved. These cats welcome human contact, the will meow and even run up against a human if they come in contact.

We have determined of the three cats we feed, two are feral and one is a stray.

Remember, pets are family!
