Our Pets Need Our Protection

Our pets rely on us for everything, food, water, health, exercise, affection and safety. What happens if a pet owner gets very sick, lives alone and has two pets? This is the case of my neighbor. A few days ago, she was taken to the hospital with a serious illness. She has a cat and a dog. Unfortunately, there was no time to board the pets or to even decide how they would be cared for. My neighbor has no relatives that live close to her.

My partner and I live next door but have a cat who is very nervous so we couldn’t take in my neighbor’s pets. What could we do? Since we have keys to the home, we are visiting them, walking the dog, feeding them and making sure that they’re ok. We’re also spending some time keeping them company. Today, I will take her dog over to sit with me on our porch.

Unfortunately, many people would not worry about anyone’s pets. We need to be more compassionate and consider the lives and well being of our furry friends. If a close neighbor, lives alone and has a pet, you may want to speak to them about gaining access to their home and their pet in the event of an emergency.

Remember, your pets count!
