Comforting Children When Their Pet Dies

Saturday, June 2, 2018
posted by Jim Murphy

I work as a substitute teacher in our local school district. The other day while substituting for a third grade class one student began crying. I called her over and asked her what was wrong and she told me that her cat had died and that she was very sad. Some of the boys couldn’t understand while she was crying and I explained that when a person or pet that we love dies, a great sadness comes over us because with love comes great sadness when that love goes away. I told the little girl that it was OK to feel sad and that eventually she will feel better. We will never forget and always have our lost pet in our hearts and they will always be with us.

I then read her The Rainbow Bridge which explains that when a pet dies, it crosses a beautiful bridge and when it gets to the other side, it is young, healthy and full of life. It plays and runs around with other animals until we get to that bridge. Then it sees us runs back over the bridge and jumps into our arms full of life, love and happiness. Then we both cross over the bridge and are together forever without, death, sickness or sadness.

I think that helped her feel a bit better and that is exactly what I believe.
