Time is always key when it comes to treating a stroke and this is true for both humans and dogs. The effects of a stroke are caused by a lack of oxygen to the brain. Dogs suffer two kinds of strokes,ischemic strokes and hemorrhagic strokes. Ischemic strokes occur when the blood supply to the brain is compromised and oxygen is deprived. A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel to the brain bursts. Both of these situations is a life threatening situation.

Symptoms come on very suddenly so I stress, do not delay treatment. My cat Molly suddenly had difficulty walking about 7 years ago. It was late and I was about to go to bed. I immediately rushed her to the 24 hour animal clinic. Fortunately, it did not turn out to be anything serious an she regained her balance very quickly but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

**Loss of balance
**Lack of coordination (ataxia)
**Weakness

**Stupor
**Uncontrollable circling
**Paralysis (usually on one side of the body)
**Vision impairment or loss (sudden onset)
**Loss of bowel control
**Inappropriate urination
**Collapse
**Seizures
**Coma
**Other abrupt behavioral
