Angus, The Bacteria Sniffing Dog
I was watching CBS This morning and they had a story about a dog who identifies bacterial infections in hospitals by sniffing them out. Bacterial infections kill 15,000 people a year and many of those infections are a result of a hospital visit. Angus is a dog who can help staff by showing them where this bacteria is active. He is taken for a walk through the hospital and will stop and sniff when he smells the bacteria. The bacteria that he identifies is called “cdip” – an active bacteria that causes bacterial infections in hospitals. The area is then disinfected. Angus was trained to identify this bacteria when he was a pup. He is rewarded with a dog treat every time he’s correct which is between 95 and 100% of the time. He must have received lots of dog treats during is training days.
Just to give you an idea about a dogs amazing sense of smell. Humans cannot smell a teaspoon of sugar in a glass of water. A dog can smell a teaspoon of sugar if it was put in an olympic sized swimming pool! Incredible!
So these incredible dogs can help reduce the amount of infections in hospitals and save lots of live per year. More dog toys, long walks and treats for these wonderful animals!
