Teaching Your Dog To Stay

dogstayIf you just adopted a puppy or even a full grown dog, you will really want to teach him to stay. The worst thing is when a new pup jumps on anyone entering your home. Here’s a quick easy process to achieve this goal.

Make sure that you dog follows the “sit” command before moving on to “stay.”

  1. Ask your dog to “sit.”
  2. Open the palm of your hand in front of you and say “stay.”
  3. If he stays, take a few steps back and reward him with a dog treat and some affection.
  4. Gradually increase the number of steps before giving him the dog treat.
  5. Aways reward your dog with a dog treat even if he just stays for a few seconds.

Sometimes it may take awhile before your dog learns to follow this command. Don’t be discouraged. Puppies have high energy and will take a lot longer. Keep at it, he’ll get it!
