Five Easy Steps to Take Your Dogs Stool To The Vet

DOGSTOOLThere are times when your vet is going to request a sample of your dog or cats stool to the vet. A proper stool sample is important for a correct diagnosis. Here are five easy steps to follow when taking your pets stool to the vet for analysis.

  1. Take a fresh sample to the vet. Don’t scoop poop that has been sitting in the backyard for several days.
  2. Correct storage is important. If your pet has an appointment in the afternoon but only poops in the morning, that’s o.k. You can store it in your fridge, or in cooler weather, store it outside. Do not store it in the freezer or leave it baking in the hot sun, this will make for a bad sample.
  3. You don’t need to take a large stool sample to your vet. A stool about the size of two sugar cubes should be fine.
  4. Make sure that the sample is in  a secure storage container. Your vet should give you a container to use. If not, a pill box,or small plastic container should be fine. Plastic bags are ok but they do have a tendency to leak.
  5. Make sure you’re bringing a true stool sample. This is especially true of you’re taking a sample of your cats stool to be analyzed. A clump of urine can be confused with a stool.

This is an easy and necessary procedure. Make sure that you always follow your vets instructions.
