Cats Miss Their Owners Just Like Dogs

My partner recently had serious open heart surgery. The hospital that he was in was 84 miles from our home. During the time he was there, I drove the 84 miles each day so I could be with him during this difficult time. I left at about 9:00am each day and returned about 7:00pm. During these days our cat Millie was alone. Her daily routine was disrupted. Even though she was comfortable in her home, she was alone all day. She is also very close to my partner, Jim and always looks forward to his attentions and pets. Several days went by and I didn’t notice much of a change in her behavior but after about three days, I noticed her walking from room to room, meowing and staying in strange places like corners and places that she never sleeps. I came home one day and found her lying in the laundry room. This was clearly bizarre behavior for her. I ruled out sickness since she was eating, drinking, peeing and pooping normally.

Last Friday, Jim came home from the hospital. As soon as he walked in the door Millie seemed very happy. She meowed and immediately returned to her normal habits. She is now in her normal spot with us in the family room. All is well.

So if anyone tries to tell you that cats don’t miss their owners or will be fine if left alone, think again. They do feel the affect of change in their lives, they just show it differently than dogs do.

Remember, pets are family!
