Do Cats Protect Their Owners?

Sunday, March 5, 2023
posted by Jim Murphy

Cats are known for being very independent creatures but when push comes to shove, some will try to protect their owners when they can. Never underestimate the intelligence of your cat. I am continually amazed by some of the things that my two cats do. Sometimes you have to look closely at their behavior. When my cat Millie wants me to get up in the morning, she does not pounce on me. I notice that she quietly sits on the nightstand and meows at me. Then she very gently puts her paw on my face to get my attention. Her claws are kept in and she’s just trying to give me a little nudge reminding me that “it’s time to get up.” Cats are not as aggressive as dogs when it comes to protecting their owners but their subtle gestures indicate that they are really concerned about their owners safety.

Over the years we’ve owned three wonderful cats. Two of them have since passed away. Losing them was traumatic to us because our pets are our family. Coming home to our furry friends always provide comfort to us. If our day was frustrating or we’re feeling lonely, a pets unconditional love provides an atmosphere of comfort and joy.Even through times of great sorrow coming home to our pets was an immediate return to normalcy. Many people don’t want to have pets because they don’t want the responsibility. Many are travelers or just want complete freedom, I feel that they’re really missing an important part of life. While pet owners do have to sacrifice, the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks.

We will always have pets in our lives. They’re not only family members but they are therapeutic. Imagine that, free therapy all the time.

Love and cherish your pets! They are truly miracles.

It’s hard to believe that there is so much that we could learn about cats.  You wouldn’t think that you would have to know the best area to place their food and water but the truth is you should.  You want kitty to enjoy her meals in a calm place. The kitchen is not always the best place, especially if you are introducing a kitten to it’s new home. They are usually very cautious at first and may become nervous if their food and water is in the kitchen. This is because the kitchen is usually a very active room. There is lots going on there. You want to make sure that kitty is getting the proper nutrition and is taking in the proper amount of fluids. Her mealtime should be a peaceful time when she can enjoy eating.  With the proper thought, you’ll come up with a good location and once you do, don’t change it. Cats are creatures of habit and prefer their environment very consistent. Don’t put her food and water near her litter box as she may become confused as to what to do.

Exercise Caution When Giving Your Cat New Food

Wednesday, March 1, 2023

This morning I got up and found that my cat Millie had thrown up all over a nice rug in our spare room. I immediately became concerned and reviewed the food that she ate yesterday. Aaah! I ran out of her snacks and remembered that someone at the pet store gave me a free bag of cat snacks. They were obviously not a general brand. At the time, I thanked the person who handed them to me and took the bag home. Last night I gave Millie a few of those snacks. She seemed to love them so I gave her a few more.

Cats have very sensitive digestive systems. Introducing any new foods or snacks can cause problems. I got the answer to my concern and will now buy her the regular snacks that she enjoys. Be very cautious when giving your cat any new food. Make sure the food is safe and reputable and start with a small amount, see how they do and increase the amount gradually.
