Facts About Cats

Tuesday, January 17, 2023
posted by Jim Murphy

Kittens at playThroughout the course of history, cat behavior has always fascinated people. Cats are independent but also still very social animals.  They combine a hunting instinct with playfulness. They love playing with their cat toys. While dogs belong to their master, cats are very territorial animals.  Cats like to stick to their home. That’s why they really don’t like to travel.  Cats see their home as a “sacred place.”  They mark it by rubbing, scratching and spraying.

They have an excellent memory of smells, sounds and sights.  They can return to their home from great distances. They don’t accept hierarchy from people.  You’re not their master but rather their equal.  Even though they can stay by themselves for a long time, they like company very much.  Cats are less responsive to vocal commands then dogs are but they can be taught to do tricks if rewarded.

Cats make great pets. You just can’t compare them to dogs. They are really very different yet still very loving and affectionate.

Caring for a Geriatric Pet

Saturday, January 14, 2023
posted by Jim Murphy

geriatric petsAs our pets get older, they will require more medical care just like we do. Pay attention to your pet as he gets older.  You should take him for a basic physical exam every six months. Check any changes to your pets appetite, thrust, urination and defecation habits. Does your pet vomit or have diarrhea? Is he sleeping more than usual? Is he coughing or does he show sign of exercise intolerance?  Normally, as pets age, they may sleep more but it can also be due to a variety of other things like arthritis, heart disease or even cancer. These conditions can be treated if diagnosed early. This is why it’s important to take your aging pet for regular checkups. As a general rule, take pets that are over the age of eight for a physical exam every six months and blood work once a year. If you notice a symptom such as weakness or vomiting, get your pet in for a checkup right away.

How to Care for Long Haired Cats Shedding

Friday, January 13, 2023
posted by Jim Murphy

cat long hairDo you have a long haired cat? It does seem as if long haired cats shed more than cats that have short hair but that’s because their hair is so long that it seems like there’s more of it. It may seem like you’re always vacuuming up hair and are constantly cleaning out the cat bed. Exotic cats that have long hair require continual brushing and grooming. This not only helps with cat allergies by reducing the dander but it can also help reduce cat hairballs. There is one solution to this problem. You can get your cat groomed and have his hair cut short like you would a dog. This won’t prevent cat allergies because allergies originate from cat dander not cat hair. Dander will still be an issue but you may be able to reduce the amount time you spend vacuuming up your cats hair. There are many groomers that will make your cat look really “cool.” Check them out!

The Importance of Protein in Cats

Monday, January 9, 2023
posted by Jim Murphy

A cat needs twice as much protein as a dog. Cats also require about 20 different kinds of amino acids to make their own body protein and those amino acids come from protein in food. What ‘s the best source of protein for your cat ,chicken, beef or fish? The truth is that any and all sources of protein are good for your cat. Commercial pet foods contain at least 30% protein from a variety of sources to more than meet your cats needs. If your cat is a eats quality foods,  you can give him beef one day, chicken the next and fish the next. All are great sources of  protein.

Don’t Ignore Blood in Your Dog or Cats Urine

Saturday, January 7, 2023
posted by Jim Murphy

Many times blood found in your dog’s urine could indicate a urinary infection but this is not always the case. There are some other causes or blood in the urine aside from an infection. Your vet should perform a urine culture to determine if it’s an infection. If  the diagnosis is positive, the urine culture should be repeated after treatment to ensure that the infection is cleared. To perform this procedure your vet will collect a sterile urine sample in the office. It will be submitted to a laboratory to see if it grows any bacteria. This will confirm that the problem is an infection.

Other causes of bloody urine  can include urinary stones, bladder tumors or kidney or prostate issues.

If you see blood in your dog’s urine, get him checked by your vet as soon as possible.

Training Your Dog With A Clicker

Friday, January 6, 2023
posted by Jim Murphy

DOG traINingClicker training is a very effective way to train your puppy. Here’s how it works. It allows your pup to remember doing something right rather than doing something wrong. Mark that behavior with a click and treat so he associates the sound with doing something right. The clicker simply signals to your pup that he did something right. Then give him verbal praise.

Here’s how to explain the click to your puppy.

Fill a shallow dog dish with treats.
Get comfortable on the floor with the dish within reach but so the pup can’t access it. Get a treat ready in one hand with the clicker in the other.
Click the clicker when your pups ears twitch or he gets curious and comes to investigate. Immediately give him a treat.
Keep repeating this sequence over and over and always click before giving him the  dog treat.
Very quickly, your pup will look at the treat in your hand as soon as he hears the click.
Once your puppy figures out what the click is all about, you can use it anytime he does something right. Always reward him with a Edgewater Gold Radio, playing you the best variety of oldies for 21 years now. Asl Aelxa to “play Edgewater Gold Radio.

The Best Ways to Exercise and Older Dog

Wednesday, January 4, 2023
posted by Jim Murphy

OLDER DOG EXERCISINGExercise is still very important for an older dog. It keeps his joint limber and his heart and lungs healthy. You must consider the physical condition of your dog. If you see signs that he is tiring out, reduce the duration and intensity until you feel that he is comfortable. A healthier dog can start with two exercise sessions a day. You can take him for a 10 minute walk, a short game of fetch or an easy swim. Just make sure that the exercise is not too strenuous.

When you exercise your dog outdoors, pick areas with soft grass or dirt. Exercising your pet on hard or slippery surfaces can damage his footpads or lead to falls. For a healthy dog a moderate walk of 20 minutes twice per day is sufficient.  Check with your veterinarian. He will give you a basic exercise routine. Once you’ve worked up to the fitness level that your vet recommended, check your dogs activity level.  Is he able to move freely and with ease?  How much energy does he have? This is will indicate whether you are exercising him too much.

Introducing a New Cat or Dog to Your Home

Tuesday, January 3, 2023
posted by Jim Murphy

Many of us take this one for granted. We are so anxious to bring a new pet home that we fail to go over the basic steps to get them acclimated to their new environment. The Animal Humane Society has listed basic steps that you should know and follow when introducing a new pet.

Despite the stereotype, many dogs and cats learn to live together peacefully. Be patient and take the introduction process slowly, but know that whether or not your pets get along will also depend on their individual personalities. Follow these steps to maximize the chances of success.

Getting started
Keep the pets separate at first
Feed them on opposite sides of a closed door
Teach basic commands
Begin face-to-face meetings
Repeat sessions daily
Allow pets loose together
Proceed with caution

Continue to separate the pets when you are not there to supervise.

Follow these steps and your new friend will fit in perfectly with you and your family.

It sometimes could be difficult to determine whether or not your cat has a sensitive stomach. The first thing that you should do is to look at is his litter box. Is it more messy than usual? Does he have diarrhea? Is he vomiting? Did you recently change his diet? I would then get him checked out by a vet to rule out any serious health issues. If it’s determined that your cat has a dietary intolerance, then your vet will recommend a food that’s highly digestible. Your veterinarian might recommend a low-residue food. This which works by providing a special blend of fiber, protein and fat sources.

Make sure that you pay attention to your cats entire digestive system, not just his stomach. This includes intestines, mouth, esophagus, gums and teeth. Tooth decay, bad breath and gum disease could also contribute to this problem. Your vet will recommend that you take care of your cats teeth by brushing them regularly.

When you do find a diet that your cat will tolerate, make sure that you stick to it.
