Infections that Can Be Spread by Pets

Thursday, November 17, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

I always worry that I can give my cat Millie on infection or virus but what infections can pets spread to us. Kidhealth.org answers this question,

The following information was obtained from KidsHealth.org

How Do Pets Spread Infections?

Also like us, animals carry germs. But illnesses common among house pets — such as distemper, canine parvovirus, and heartworms — can’t spread to people.

But some types of bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi that pets can carry can make people sick though a bite or scratch, or if someone has contact with an animal’s waste, saliva, or dander. Infants, kids younger than 5 years old, pregnant women, and people with weak immune systems have a greater chance of getting sick from these.
Pet Precautions

Consider the type of pet and the health and age of your kids before you get a pet. For example, children whose immune systems are weak (from HIV, chemotherapy treatment for cancer, or steroid medicines) shouldn’t be around cats and dogs with ringworm infections. Kids with eczema should avoid aquariums. Reptiles and amphibians as pets are not a good idea for families with infants, young children, or an immunocompromised family member.
Dogs and Cats

Dogs and cats can carry infections such as:

Campylobacter infection: In people, this bacterial infection causes diarrhea, belly pain, and fever.
Cat scratch disease: Signs of this bacterial infection include swollen and tender lymph nodes , fever, headaches, and tiredness.
Rabies: This serious illness is rare thanks to widespread immunization of dogs and cats in the United States.
Diseases carried by ticks: Tick-borne diseases can happen when ticks attach to pets outdoors. Use tick prevention products on pets and safely remove and dispose of ticks as soon as possible.
Ringworm: Kids can get ringworm from touching infected dogs and cats. This can cause a dry, scaly round area with a raised red bumpy border and a clear center.
Toxocariasis: The eggs of a parasitic roundworm in the intestines of dogs and cats can pass from their poop into soil where kids play. An infected child can have a fever, cough or wheezing, enlarged liver, rash, or swollen lymph nodes.
Toxoplasmosis: An infection from a parasite found in cat poop usually causes no symptoms in healthy people but can cause serious problems for pregnant women and their unborn babies. So pregnant women and people with weak immune systems should not clean litter boxes.

Getting Rid of Cat Urine Smell

Wednesday, November 16, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

CUTE KITTYThe smell of cat urine tends to linger on for an eternity. If your cat urinates on your carpet, he’s probably make this his new toilet. He will be attracted to the smell and go back to the same area again and again. How to get him to stop doing it is another topic but today, we’re going to give you some tips on how to get rid of the urine smell.

HOMEMADE SOLUTION:

Get some white vinegar (the old, plain kind will do), hydrogen peroxide, liquid hand soap, and baking soda.
If the spot is dry, proceed to step 3. Otherwise, blot the area (don’t rub!) with a paper towel to absorb as much moisture as you can.
Mix equal parts water to vinegar and pour the mixture over the affected area to saturate and let it dry.
Liberally sprinkle the baking soda over the spot.
Then stir up a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and dish liquid (four parts hydrogen peroxide to one part detergent) and lightly rub the mixture onto the area. Use a brush (old toothbrushes work wonders), gloved fingers, or whatever else you have on hand to get the job done.
After it dries, vacuum the area. If the smell remains, repeat the process.
Thank you to Arm and Hammer for providing us with this useful tip!

Our cat Millie is almost 18 years old and she’s enjoying her senior years with us. We always had another cat and Millie would feel slighted and intimidated by our other cats Mollie and Atlantis. Now that they both are gone, Millie rules the roost. She no longer has to hide in a back room. Millie was adopted after we had our cat Mollie for six years. Needless to say the two never bonded. After Mollie passed, we adopted Atlantis a beautiful cat after our neighbor passed away. Atlantis was not well but lived with us for two years. Again Millie felt intimidated and kept to herself. Millie was always a shy cat but has since become more bold. She’s actually demanding and is into a daily routine and we love it. She is finally able to get all of the love and attention!

We would eventually love to adopt another pet, probably a dog but will not do it while we still have Millie. We want her to feel safe, happy and loved and be the center of attention during the later years of her life.

How Long Can Outdoor Cats Stay Away From Home?

Monday, November 14, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

cat-asleepI had a conversation yesterday with a friend who has outdoor cats. She said that sometimes her cats prefer to stay indoors but she will let them out when they meow at the door. You know my feelings about an outdoor cat. I feel they live longer and are much safer indoors. Outdoor cats are roamers. Sometimes they will not come home for a night or two which is perfectly normal. My friend mentioned that one time her cat did not come home for ten days! Now if that were me, I would panic! I would fear that it was injured or hit by a car and that I couldn’t do anything to help it. The story turns out fine for my friend. One morning she got up and found her 10 year old tabby meowing at the back door. Now if only cats can talk and tell you where they were. You can’t punish them and send them to their room, you can’t give them a time out, you just have to grin and get used to the fact that if you let your cat outdoors, it may stay away for several nights at a time. Now don’t you wish that your outdoor cat was fast asleep with you inside in it’s cat bed?

How Your Dog Sees You

Sunday, November 13, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

Most dogs have a total vision field of 250 degrees. Humans have about 120 degrees of binocular vision, but human eyes are set directly on the front of the face , a dogs eyes are set more to the side. A human’s total visual field is only 190 degrees, giving dogs the advantage of 60 degrees more peripheral vision. Some dogs have eyes that are deep set such as the Chow Chow. As a result, their peripheral vision is reduced. This should be kept in mind when approaching these breeds from the rear.

Dogs were once thought to be color blind but scientists now agree that they have enough color preceptor cones in their eyes that they can see certain colors.

Dogs have binocular vision. Binocular vision is the area within a dog’s total vision field that overlaps, providing it with the depth of perception needed to pursue prey. The exact degree of binocular vision is different among dogs. It all depends on the shape of the dogs head and the placement of the eyes.

A Key to Proper Training

Friday, November 11, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

PUPPYTRAIINGYour new pup is running around, you are shouting at him trying to get him to come to you or to jump in the car but your word’s aren’t going anywhere. The first thing you need to do is win your dog’s mind. Here are some real keys to training. You may be training him to fetch his dog toys, come when called, go inside his dog crate, stop barking understanding the results is critical to achieving your goal.

The first thing you need to do is win your dog’s mind. If you don’t do this right away, training him will be an uphill battle. Your dog looks to you for all of the decisions. You must be the pack leader. There are ways to do this. Do some research and learn the tips on how you become the pack leader, not your dog. Just at the point when you think you’re getting your dog to listen, they will do their own thing. Your dog may fetch his outside dog toy, come when called etc 99% of the time, however if you want a dog who always listens to you and does as you ask then you need to win your dogs mind.

The second key to your success is to motivate your dog. It’s important that you determine what your dog enjoys in terms if exercise and play and also in terms of reward. What’s his favorite dog treat? If you can make your dog’s experience enjoyable, then you will achieve more and both of you will look forward to training. Find out what your dog’s love and make his training as enjoyable as possible.

Detecting Heart Problems in your Pet

Thursday, November 10, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

VET DOGHeart problems are life threatening and should be detected and treated immediately. There’s no time to spare ! There are several clues to look for to determine if your pet has a heart problem. They seem to slow down and can’t play or exercise anymore. Dr. Andrew Lowell is a Veterinarian at the Pender Veterinary Clinic in Fairfax, Virginia . He says that pets and humans have common heart symptoms. If humans feel lethargic, tire frequently and can’t run anymore, this can be an indicator that there is a heart problem.

Heavy breathing and continual fatigue are signals that your pet needs to go to the Vet and get checked out. Frequently, heart problems can be controlled with the proper pet medication. My pet began coughing. At first I thought that he had something stuck in his throat so I looked and didn’t feel anything. The coughing stopped but started up again periodically. My pet also became less active than usual. When I took him to the Vet, it was determined that he had a serious heart problem. I had several prescription pet medications that I had to administer several times a day. This prolonged his life for almost a year.

Make sure that you understand your Vets instructions when it comes to administering your pets medication. This is extremely important especially if you have several different medications to administer.

The bottom line is do not hesitate to call your vet as soon as you notice any change in your pets normal behavior.

How Many Cats Are Too Many?

Wednesday, November 9, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

TOO MANY CATSYou know that I am an animal lover. I once saw a special on 20/20 . They did a story about people with too many cats. One woman had over 100 in her house!! I just want you to know that this is only my opinion. I always try to live a balanced life. I mean spending quality time for work, friends, family and my two cats. I also believe that when you adopt a pet, you should strive to give them a clean, healthy, happy and peaceful life. People who go to extremes and by “extremes” I mean having so many cats living indoors are not doing themselves or the animals any good. They create an imbalance in their lives. Caring for over many cats requires lots of time, money and cleaning. Think of all of the food, litter, cat toys, not to mention the expense incurred if they get sick.

You should also try to bond with your pets and having all of these cats limits the time you can spend with each of them. Now, please keep in mind, if you have cats that you keep outdoors and care for and feed them, then I guess it doesn’t matter how many but still there should be limits. If you are spending an enormous amount of time caring for your cats, then, you aren’t spending enough time on other things in your life. This creates an imbalance. Things could easily go awry if your life is not properly balanced with work, hobbies, play, pets and other loved ones. The lady with over 100 cats lived in filth. The cats looked unhealthy. They were on top of one another is an extremely unsanitary environment. They were certainly not living, happy, healthy lives. The person who owned these cats became so obsessed with caring for them that she neglected her own needs. The house was a filthy mess. I feel that everything in moderation is OK. My message here is that balance is important and this even applies to your pets. They need love and attention and going overboard and having so many is not doing the animals or yourself any good.

The Beautiful Norwegian Forest Cat

Tuesday, November 8, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

NORWEIGIANCATIf you were to design a cat that was perfect for cold climates, you probably couldn’t come up with a better cat that mother nature has already designed. The Norwegian Forest cat. This is a very old breed that used to roam the seas with the vikings. It has a beautiful long double coat that changes to fit the seasons. The outer layer is waterproof, ready for harsh snow and rain. The cats tail is long and bushy and its ears have long tufts for extra protection. It’s interesting, but the Norwegian Forest cat does not require a lot of grooming. It also makes a wonderful house pet that is good with children and other pets. So if you’re considering a cat, buy those cat treats and cat toys for your Norwegian Forest cat!

Antifreeze is Deadly to Pets

Sunday, November 6, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

SEETDOGAnti freeze, the fluid that makes your car run better in both summer and winter is very dangerous to your pet. Ethylene Glycol is the anti freeze that is commonly used in car radiators and this is extremely toxic to pets. As little as one tablespoon can kill a cat and a couple of ounces can kill a dog. Animals will ingest it because it smells and tastes so sweet. If you have pets, it is vital that you clean up any leaking anti freeze. If you’re worried that you pet may have ingested some, don’t waste any time. Call your veterinarian or the National Animal Poison Control hot line right away! Your veterinarian may suggest that you administer hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting. Don’t administer any pet medication on your own. This situation is out of your control just get your pet to a vet as soon as you can!!A
