Preparing Your Feline Friend for a Trip

Thursday, August 18, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

Summer is in full swing and maybe you’re planning a road trip with your cat. Love That Pet.com has put together a nice list of tips. Understand that traveling with a cat is a bit different than traveling with your dog.

CAR TRAVEL CHECKLIST

You’ll need lots of stuff to keep kitty healthy and happy (or at least contented!). Here’s a checklist of must-have items that you’ll not want to leave home without:

Cat carrier. A loose cat in a car is a recipe for disaster – REAL disaster. A loose cat could very well end up under your brake petal, or with a death-grip claw hold on the back of your neck. Choose a carrier that’s purpose-designed for cats, is roomy and well-ventilated, and secure it in your vehicle so that it can’t move. And make sure that it’s not positioned in direct sunlight for long periods.
Food, water and bowls. Be sure to bring along your cat’s regular food, and even the water that your cat is accustomed to drinking. If that’s tap water, bottle some and bring it along.
Cat toys and a cat bed –  bring along some comforts of home. Choose some favorite toys and familiar bedding that the cat already uses.
Litter and accessories. You probably won’t bring your cat’s regular litter box. But DO bring the brand of litter that you use at home, and that’s already familiar to your cat. Also bring along disposable litter trays, OR a small non-disposable litter tray, a scooper, and disposable bags.

First of all, cats consider hamsters and other small rodents as prey. So if you’re considering getting a hamster of gerbil for your child and you also have a pet cat, take a step back and think. You’ll frequently see an outdoor cat carrying a dead mouse in his mouth and setting it outside the door as a “present” for you. My opinion, don’t do it! Even if your cat doesn’t want the hamster for supper, his curiosity will tempt him to place his paws in the cage and probably knock it over injuring or even killing your new pet.   Stay away from those cute little hamsters or gerbils!

The Benefits of a Self Cleaning Litter Box

Tuesday, August 16, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

Cat feces contain several infectious agents such as the Toxoplasma gondii parasite which can cause toxoplasmosis. People with strong immune symptoms may never experience any of the symptoms associated with toxoplasmosis. However, women that are pregnant, children and those who suffer from immunodeficiencies (such as HIV infection)are at an increased risk for this disease. For those who are at high risk, symptoms can be severe and may include brain, eye or organ damage. E. coli infection is another risk associated with cat feces. While most strains of E. coli are harmless, some can cause serious illness, especially in children under five.

With all of this said, a self cleaning litter box can reduce the risk of parasitic infection associated with cat feces. They also make cleaning litter boxes and waste disposal easier and more convenient than ever before.  They work very well with all types of litter including litter made with natural ingredients such as wheat and corn and also work well with clumping litter. Self cleaning litter boxes can really help to reduce infectious waste because they are cleaning consistently. The little genie waste disposal system is a great way to keep everything sanitary and smelling great!

Plan Ahead for Pet Emergencies

Monday, August 15, 2022

Veterinary technician Virginia Rudde of the Minnesota School of Business says that when it comes to protecting a pet during an emergency, it’s critical that you plan ahead. Make sure that your whole family is in on the plan and everyone knows what their part is. This will make the rescue process go much smoother.  Keep a collar and leash, the dog carrier or pet carrier, food and water and your pets medical records on hand in case that you need to evacuate. She also recommends getting your pets micro-chipped or having other permanent ID that won’t be affected if your pet is lost or injured. During a disaster, energency personnel may ask your neighbors if a pet is inside your home. Consider giving them a list of emergency contacts who could answer any questions about your pet in your absence.

Bladder Infection in our Canine Friends

Saturday, August 13, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

Cystitis is an infection of the lining of the  bladder. Urinary stones can also result because of cystitis. Some causes can include increasing age, diabetes and being on corticosteroid therapy.  In sexually active males, there may also be preexisting prostatitis.  Dogs who go long periods of not urinating have an increased chance of getting a bladder infection.

The main sign of bladder infection is painful urination. The urine may appear cloudy and have an abnormal odor. Females with cystitis may lick their hind area and have some vaginal discharge. The diagnosis is determined by your vet. If the urinalysis shows white and red blood cells and bacteria in the urine, then it’s Cystitis.

Cystitis should be treated promptly to prevent kidney infection.  Your vet will prescribe an oral antibiotic that is effective against the bacteria.  The antibiotic is given for two or three weeks, then the urine is checked again.

Getting Your Child a Pet

Thursday, August 11, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

Many times parents will not allow their children to have pets for one reason or another. Most of the time it’s because the child will become bored with the pet and the parents will end up taking care of it. There are all sorts of reasons for allowing a child to have a pet. Pets can ease a child’s loneliness. They can teach a child responsibility and also unconditional love. Pets can also teach a child lessons about birth and death. Pets can help children relate to other people in their lives. A child can also learn about the costs involved in owning a pet.

There are many reasons why pets are not only good for adults but are good for the children as well. So when your son or daughter, is inquiring about a pet or visits a local pet store wishing that they could own one of those cute little puppies or kittens in the cages, why not take them down to the local shelter and consider adopting a pet? You and your child won’t regret it.

Bacteria in Your Dogs Water

Wednesday, August 10, 2022

Dogs like to have their own dog food bowls, but do you really need more  than one water bowl for more than one dog?  What about the germs in each dog’s mouth?  Just like humans, dogs have a lot of bacteria in their saliva. Lets not call them all germs because many bacteria serve a useful purpose. Bad bacteria usually gets zapped by acid in the dogs stomach when it swallows. Some diseases that dogs pass along are respiratory. Some are transmitted by fecal contaminants. Dogs with healthy immune systems can safely share one water bowl. Just make sure that you keep plenty of water around. Adult dogs are 60% water and it should stay that way.

A Grumpy Cat Day

Tuesday, August 9, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

Some days we feel like a million bucks other days,we feel bummed out and want to be alone. Our cats are the same as us in this way. One day my cat Millie got up on the “wrong side of the bed.” She usually follows me all over the house and craves my attention. This particular day when I went to pet her, she swatted me as if to say “leave me alone.”  She is not in a good mood today. Immediately, I tried to determine whether or not she was feeling well.  It seems like she was fine physically. She was eating and acting normal in every other way. It seems like she just wants to be alone today. Respect you cat’s moods and always give her lots of love. Never scold her, it will  get her more upset. Tomorrow she’s be back to her “normal” self and will be craving all of your attention as usual.

You probably already know how I feel about this subject. Both dogs and cats need love and attention. Dogs needs to be walked every few hours but they also are like children and require human interaction and lots of exercise. If I had to give you the maximum time that a dog should be left alone, I would say not longer than four hours at a time. Cats are frequently left alone for days because they are perceived as independent. Not true. Cats also get bored and lonely. Cat toys alone don’t substitute for human interaction. Their food and water should always be kept fresh and their litter should be changed regularly. Cats can also get sick and need medical attention. Never leave your cat alone for days. I never leave mine alone. It does mean having to sacrifice like not traveling but that’s my choice and I wouldn’t have it any other way! If you must leave, plan to have your pets properly cared for while your gone. Still they will know that you are not there for them.  Bottom line, if you are going to have a pet, you must make the commitment to care for it properly and that means being available to fill its needs including giving them  lots of love and attention. If you are not willing to make this commitment, don’t get a pet.
