When you visit an animal shelter, you could tell by the little eyes peering our of a cage that the animals are sad and would love to be adopted. That’s why I have a very difficult time visiting them. This scenario is replayed millions  of times each year . Pets that are either lost or dropped off by owners who no longer want them  are housed and cared for at least temporarily. Sadly shelters are the last stop for more that half the pets that end up there. All of the pets are on death row unless they get adopted.  That is why it’s important to visit an animal shelter when adopting a pet. This is much better than buying a pet from the pet store at the mall. I know that all of those dogs and cats look so cute when your at the mall, but think of the millions that are in shelters in need of adoption and awaiting their fate. Make the right choice!

The Best Dogs for Seniors

Thursday, May 19, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

Seniors need and appreciate the company of a dog probably more than any other age group but if a senior citizen wishes to adopt a puppy at age 65 or older,  there’s a lot to consider.  When the dog reaches fourteen or fifteen, the senior will be 76 or 77 years old. The question is will that senior still be able to care for the dog at that age. Sure many will but a lot could happen in that time  to limit the mobility of a senior citizen.  This is why an older, shelter dog may be a better choice . If there was ever a time to own a dog, it would be around the time that you hit 70.  For an older couple, a dog could make a hugh difference in their lives. The kids are grown and the rooms are empty. Never get a dog for someone without consulting with them first.

Smaller dogs are generally better for senior citizens. They are easier to manage and pick up after. Senior citizens are more into walking and jogging now than ever before for health reasons so having an active companion like a dog seems like a good idea. My first choice would be a mix breed from the local SPCA.  They have some of the best dogs and a knowledgeable staff that can help you find what you need and at an affordable price.  They screen all of the dogs and let you know the ones that you would be happy with.  A few good breeds for seniors are:

  • The Yorkshire Terrier
  • Boston Terrier
  • Miniature Poodle
  • Pug
  • Miniature Schnauzer
  • Shih Tzu

It a great thing to a senior to adopt a dog. There’s much love and affection to be had here.

Are You Considering Adopting a Lap Dog?

Wednesday, May 18, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

Do you like to relax in front of the TV or reading a good book in your favorite chair? Isn’t it great when your pet joins you for a nice, cozy relaxing afternoon? Most dogs are either too large to comfortably sit on your lap or  don’t have the temperament to stay awhile. They’ll jump up and quickly jump down and look something else to occupy their time. There are some breeds that make great lap dogs.

  • Bichon Frise
  • Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
  • Chihuahua (When he wants to chill out)
  • Maltese
  • Pug
  • Pomeranian
  • Shih Tzu
  • Yorkshire Terrier

There are many more but these breeds make wonderful lap dogs.

Obesity in Cats Shorten Their Lives

Tuesday, May 17, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

Obesity in cats is just as unhealthy as it is in humans. It not only shortens your cats lifespan but can cause many diseases including heart disease, arthritis and diabetes.Your vet will advise you if your cat is overweight and will also suggest a change in diet. Snacks should be given sparingly. I must admit that I fall short in this area. Snacks adds calories and are not that nutritious.

Always try to exercise your cat. Have him catch a toy at the end of a stick.  Cats loves this and it provides the exercise that indoor cats need. Overweight cats that  suddenly stop eating can develop a serious liver  condition Hepatic Lipidosis .  So reduce your cats weight by good food management and exercise. You will add years onto his life and he will look much better as well!

He’ll thank you for it.

The following information regarding your dogs Achilles Tendon prepared by the Top Dog Library website. I was visiting friends yesterday and their dog is recovering from Achilles Tendon surgery. They have to be very careful that he does not injure it once again and they must exercise the dog leg everyday. Here’s some important information regarding the Achilles Tendon and the dogs that are prone to Achilles Tendon injury.

Who gets Achilles Tendon Rupture?

Dogs that are affected by an Achilles tendon rupture are primarily from the large sporting and working
breeds, and are usually 5 years of age and older. The Doberman pinscher and Labrador retrievers seem
to be overrepresented in this condition, but it can occur in any dog or cat, no matter what age or breed.

What are the Signs of Achilles Tendon Rupture?

With a partial rupture, the gastrocnemius tendon is torn, but the superficial digital flexor tendon is still
intact. Animals with a partial rupture will have a dropped hock, be lame in the affected leg, and will
stand with curled toes.

Dogs that have a complete rupture and all five tendons of the Achilles tendon are torn will have a
completely dropped hock, so that he is walking flat-footed rather than on his “tippy toes” like normal,
and will show signs of lameness. (show pictures of affected animals with dropped hock)

Pain and edema (swelling) will follow the injury. Eventually the gastrocnemius muscle will contract, and
the area between the bone and the tendon fills with fibrous tissue.

Taking Your Puppy to the Vet

Saturday, May 14, 2022

When you first get a puppy, you’ll need to take him in to the veterinarian for a proper exam and vaccination. Some puppy shots are administered in a series. If it’s a new vet, you’ll probably get to know him/her quite well during the initial period. After the initial series of shots, most healthy dogs only need to visit the veterinarian only once a year for their annual vaccinations and a brief checkup. Older dogs may need to get more frequent exams. It’s a good idea to ask about special geriatric screenings. Most veterinarians will recommend a bi annual visit. No matter what your dogs age is, any sudden changes in his behavior or eating habits should be reported to a veterinarian. Your treatment options are always better when you catch a problem early on. Always refer to your vet for pet medications. Never try to administer anything yourself. This will keep your new pet healthy and happy.

Brewers yeast hardly sounds like something that’s meant for your pet. It’s a one cell fungus used to make beer. It can be used as a dietary supplement for your pet. Brewers yeast contains B vitamins, zinc, proteins and amino acids. It’s known for boosting the immune system and promoting healthy skin and a shinny coat. It’s also been sold as a flea remedy. Some animals are allergic to yeast and diabetic pets must avoid it because yeast can interfere with the insulin cycle.  Before trying brewers yeast as a new supplement, talk to your veterinarian. He or she will determine if brewers yeast could be a beneficial component of your pets diet.

The Advantages of Adopting an Older Cat

Thursday, May 12, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

Cats that are over ten are considered elderly but there are some real benefits in choosing to adopt an older cat.

  • You are doing the animal a wonderful act of kindness. Older cats are much less likely to get adopted and the shelters cannot keep them indefinitely.
  • Older cats are generally calmer and don’t have some the behavior problems that younger cats may have.
  • Personality – Older cats are more mellow and make great companions. They will sit on your lap and purr you to sleep!
  • Older cats are less likely to hunt and get themselves into trouble. Although I would always suggest that you keep your cat indoors.
  • A senior cat is  also less likely to get underfoot as kittens frequently do.
  • An older cat will be completely house trained.

So consider doing a world of service to an older cat by offering her a wonderful new home. You won’t regret it. They may be older but they still have lots of love to give.

Memorial Day is coming up and the unofficial start of the summer season begins. You will be spending more time outdoors with your pets. Summer holidays are a great time for barbeques, pool parties, picnics. The make sure that summer is enjoyable for both you and your pet, you should be aware of various summertime hazards that can result in injury or illness to your pet. Here are some tips to keep your pet safe during the summer.

Outdoor threats – Always keep your pet on a dog leash when you leave your yard.  If your dog meets another dog, a fight could result, injuring both you and your dog.  Protect your dog from insects. Flies are everywhere in summer. If your dog has a cut or scratch, files could lay their eggs in his wound. The eggs will hatch in the form of maggots which will infest your dog. Always keep him clean and wash any cuts out regularly.

Table scraps – Never give your pet any leftover food from the barbecue. He could choke on the bones and scraps can cause gastrointestinal upset which can result in vomiting and diarrhea. Pets are  not used to the high fat content of foods commonly associated with picnics and barbeques.

Heat Illness – Do not over exercise your dog in the heat or never leave him in a hot car or in the sun. Always provide a cool bowl of water when you’re outside with him. Heat stroke can kill your dog very quickly.

Fish Hooks – If you take your dog fishing with you, watch out for the hooks. Your dog may like the bait on the hook and swallow both the hook and line. Also watch out that he doesn’t step on any hooks.

Water – Never let your pet drink for stagnant pools of water. This can cause serious gastrointestinal problems.

Be safe and have a great summer with your pet!

One day, awhile ago, a man was driving with his pet dog in the car. He had his iPad turned on and was looking at it while he was driving. He glanced down and the next thing he new was that he hit the car in front of him. The airbags engaged and hit the man and his Golden Retriever who was in the front seat. The dog freaked out and jumped out the window into oncoming traffic. The owner tried to chase him but lost the dog as he darted through traffic on the busy streets.

Fortunately, a couple found the dog and brought him to a vet who scanned his chip. The owner got the dog back but he was severely injured. The dog made a full recovery. The owner can’t forgive himself and now puts all of his devices in the trunk.  This is a little too late since he caused his beloved pet so much injury.

Don’t be stupid! I see so many people driving and talking on the phone, texting etc. You are not only putting yourself at risk but are risking the life of others including our pets! Is it worth it?? Be safe, not stupid!!
