Training Your Puppy with a Clicker

Thursday, April 7, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

Clicker training is a very effective way to train your puppy. Here’s how it works. It allows your pup to remember doing something right rather than doing something wrong.  Mark that behavior with a click and treat so he associates the sound with doing something right. The clicker simply signals to your pup that he did something right. Then give him verbal praise.

Here’s how to explain the click to your puppy.

  1. Fill a shallow dish with treats.
  2. Get comfortable on the floor with the dish within reach but so the pup can’t access it. Get a treat ready in one hand with the clicker in the other.
  3. Click the clicker when your pups ears twitch or he gets curious and comes to investigate. Immediately give him a treat.
  4. Keep repeating this sequence over and over and always click before giving him the treat.
  5. Very quickly, your pup will look at the treat in your hand as soon as he hears the click.

Once your puppy figures out what the click is all about, you can use it anytime he does something right. Always reward him with a treat and praise. Remember that puppies understand cause and effect very quickly.

Beware of Pleural Effusion in Pets

Wednesday, April 6, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

Pleural Effusion is a condition where fluid or pus accumulates in an animals chest cavity compressing the lungs and heart. Leah Cohn, Professor of Veterinary Internal Medicine at the University of Missouri says that animals with pleural effusion have to breathe very rapidly because they can’t expand their lungs. They take short, shallow, rapid breaths. She says the pleural effusion has many potential causes such as infection and congestive heart failure.  Treatment will vary. If a pet is struggling to breath, most veterinarians will remove the fluid with a needle and syringe.  This is a process that may need to be repeated until the underlying cause of the fluid buildup can be cured.   If you notice your pet breathing very rapidly, take him to your vet right away.

Inmates Training Service Dogs

Tuesday, April 5, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

There are a variety of ways to become involved in training a service dog. One unique way that benefits the dog and the training is through inmates. When given the opportunity to train future service dogs, inmates gain confidence, learn how to handle responsibility and develop a valuable emotional bond with the animal. They also gain training and grooming expertise. Abilities that may help them find jobs when they leave prison. It’s an idea that seems to be working. Released inmates that have trained dogs have high employment and low rates of returning to a life of crime. The dog’s benefit to. Most are rescue dogs that need attention and obediance training. Many go on to become valuable service or therapy dogs. So if your ever visiting anyone in prison, don’t be surprised if you see some prisoners with dog leashes and dogs training.

Dogtown USA

Monday, April 4, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

Now a days we want to take our dogs everywhere. But which places are the best? In order for a city to be considered , it has to have lots of hotels where dogs are welcome as well as restaurants that will allow dogs to eat on their patios. Excellent veterinary care and an active humane society are also important elements of a pet friendly city. It must also be a place where there are a lot of dog centered activities. So which city wins?

According to NBC news, San Diego is the dog friendliest city in the U.S.  It was a wonderful climate. There’s a large selection of pet friendly and off leash beaches. One large shopping center has an off leash park and also provides a pet sitting service  that only charges $5 an hour while you shop and eat. There are lots of pet friendly restaurants in La Jolla. In addition, your dog may enjoy a kayaking excursion around La Jolla Bay — although pet life jackets are provided, dogs should be good swimmers.

So San Diego can be considered Dog town USA.

Some Things to Know About Bulldogs

Sunday, April 3, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

I’ve been seeing lots of Bulldogs around lately. Bulldogs are great companions. Remember that bulldogs and heat don’t mix well. Make sure that he is kept in a cool environment indoors. Make sure he has his dog toys, pet carrier, dog crate and all of the other essentials. The AKC registers over 140 dog breeds every year and the bulldog is in the top 40 every year! When buying water bowls for your bulldog, invest in heavy duty stainless steel bowls. They will reduce the rash and redness on your bulldogs face from the bowls. They can be cleaned easily and are much better than plastic.

Bulldogs get along great with children and other pets as a general rule. They love a nice, soft couch, lots of attention, especially getting their bellies rubbed. They have a great disposition, and will give you and your family lots and lots of love.

Routine Routine Routine—Pets are Family

It’s Friday at 7:00 am and I hear a little “meow” on the side of my bed. It’s my cat Millie telling be “it’s time to get up.” As I get up Millie goes over to the bedroom window, turns around and “meows” again. She wants me to go over to the window and give her a little pet. She then leads me down the hall and gets up on her cat post and waits patiently for me to give her some wet food that she only takes a taste or two of. Nevertheless, she has to have it. At 12:30 pm she signals me with another”meow” meaning that it’s time for me to take my shower. After my showers, Millie is outside the bathroom door waiting for me to brush her. I finish up, get dressed and follow her to the chair. I brush her at the same time in the same place every day. It’s evening and she is sitting beside me as I pet her. She gets up, goes to her bowl and stares me down. It’s time for her snack. I get up and place a few snacks in her bowl. She then comes back over, jumps on the chair, lies next to me and expects more pets. After about 45 minutes, she gets up once again, walks over to her bowl, stares me down and expects more snacks. I give in as usual. This continues several more times throughout the evening. At about 12:00 midnight while I’m watch Colbert, Millie is looking at me “meowing” once again. This time she’s signaling me to go to bed so she could have the chair to herself. I usually get up and turn in for the evening.

As you can see from this routine, I’ve  been spoiling our little Millie but cats do love humans and have a set routine everyday. This is one of the reasons why I don’t like leaving her and that our travel is very limited. Pets are like kids. Parents usually don’t like to leave them for an extended period of time.

Smelly Puppy

Friday, April 1, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

We all love our animals, but let’s face it; sometimes they don’t leave the best impression when we’re trying to impress our friends and family. After all, when you’re throwing a party, there’s nothing worse than having to explain that the couch smells that musty because your miniature schnauzer gets to sleep on the furniture. If you find that your animals are leaving their unmistakable and distinctive smell all over your home, know that you don’t simply have to take it as part of being a pet owner.

Rather, there are multiple options for pet odor removal that can get rid of or cut down on the smell of pets. Just be certain about what you’re buying. Some products will only cover the smell of pet odor. By filling the air with a strong floral scent, you’ll essentially mask the embarrassing odor, but it won’t actually be gone. Make sure that whatever product you choose actually works to eliminate these odors.
