A dogs prostate can become enlarged just as humans can.  When a dogs prostate becomes enlarged,it becomes pre-exposed to cysts and infections.  How can you tell if your dog has a problem with his prostate?  Check to see if he strains to urinate and also check to see if there’s blood in his urine.  In severe cases, a dog may become ill or even collapse. Prostatic disease is most common in non-neutered dogs.  Mary McClouglin, a small animal surgeon at Ohio State University recommends that all male dogs get checked for prostate problems.  Your vet will determine whether or not the prostate is enlarged, in the right place and the right shape. If abnormalities are detected, pet medication, neutering or surgery may be recommended by your vet to protect your pet. Look for these signs.  If you find anything abnormal, have your dog checked out right away. You won’t be sorry!

How Dogs Can Help Children with Autism

Friday, March 18, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

I read an article that really interests me. It was about a Labrador Retriever that was trained  to help an autistic boy deal with his disabilities.  According to the article source, the boy has difficulty transitioning from home to school and has outbursts which are common in autistic children. His mother says that the dog’s calming presence helps. The dog is kept on his  leash and causes no problem at school. The school objects to this and says that they already provide him with adequate service for his autism. Although they may provide adequate service, does this prevent the boy from his outbursts? If the dog helps calm the boy and causes no harm, this author believes that he should be allowed to stay in school.  A county judge allowed the dog to accompany the boy to school  temporarily until the case is settled. What do you think? Dogs are smart creatures that have the ability to help the handicapped. Why not let them in schools to help with autism?  Of course many things must be considered before allowing a dog in a classroom. A very small group setting with adequate staff would work best.

Bathing Your Dog

Thursday, March 17, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

This question has been asked many times by dog owners. There are a number of factors to consider when it comes to the frequency that you should bath your dog.  Some of these factors are the condition of your dogs coat, his skin condition and the type of coat that he has.  If your dog is outside in warm weather frequently, he is more likely to get dirty and require a bath. If your dog swims in a lake with a lot of algae , then you’ll want to bath him right away.

If your dog’s skin is sensitive, then you’ll not want to bath him too often. This will irritate his skin even more. Even the shampoo you use will irritate a dog’s skin.  A dogs natural oils will moisten your dogs skin so less bathing is required. If you must bathe your dog, consider a moisturizing shampoo or an oatmeal shampoo.

If your dog has an oily coat, then consider bathing him more frequently than a dog  with a dry coat.

A general rule of thumb is that if your dog is not dirty or you don’t have a specific reason to bathe him, them less bathing would be more appropriate.

So lets answer the question. How often should you bathe your dog? Given the facts listed above, give your dog a good bath every three months or so unless there is a reason to bathe him more often.

Dogs and Retirement Communities

The answer to this question depends on the research that you do. There are some great 55 and over communities that accept dogs and some even have play areas and special activities for our furry friends. If you have a dog, it’s very important that you do your research if your are considering on over 55 community. You will need to check online first and locate the communities in your area that cater to specific needs of people looking at retirement. When you are looking for quotes online – make sure you specify that you are looking for pet friendly senior homes.  Pets are wonderful for seniors as they grow older and it’s this authors opinion that all 55 and over facilities should allow pets! It’s really ashamed that a lot of them don’t. Your pets are part of your family, you wouldn’t give up a child if you were moving so why should you give up your pets? The heck with the facilities that don’t accept them, you don’t want to live there anyway!!

An Effective Way to Clean up Cat Hair

Monday, March 14, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

Does cleaning up your cat’s fur drive you nuts?  You may want to purchase a cat hair magnet. This great invention comes in a variety of forms. Some are large arched brushes that your cat can rub against effectively grooming herself, others are small rubber tools that you can use to clean your furniture. The term “magnet” is a bit misleading. Although the products are designed to trap cat hair, they’re not technically magnets. The rubber bristles in these products generate an electrostatic charge that help attract and hold loose fur. Then you can easily vacuum it up before it sticks to your furniture.

Cats can and will get into anything! Here’s a story by Paul Caufield of the New York Daily News published several years ago.

A stowaway cat survived a flight from Ohio to Disney World after he became trapped in his owner’s suitcase.

Ethel Maze, of the Circleville, near Columbus, wasn’t sure how her kitten, Bob-Bob, got into her luggage before her annual trip to see Mickey and Minnie Mouse on Monday.

Maze runs a care home for disabled veterans, and every year, she takes around 15 of them to the park dubbed “The Happiest Place on Earth.”

“We have a young man who helps out and gets our luggage ready and he said it looked like a suitcase was moving but he thought he was imagining things,” she told ABC News.

“We had been up all night getting ready so we thought nothing of it.”

Somehow, Bob-Bob managed to survive and hour’s drive from the home to Columbus airport, a trip through the X-ray scanner, and a two hour flight to Orlando that took off at 7 a.m.

TSA agents weren’t sure how the cat slipped past security.

“Our machines are very sensitive to picking up explosives and other threats to aviation,” spokeswoman Sari Koshetz told the Orlando Sentinel.

We have a young man who helps out and gets our luggage ready and he said it looked like a suitcase was moving but he thought he was imagining things,” says Bob-Bob’s owner Ethel Maze.

Maze didn’t discover the cat until 2:30 p.m. on Monday, 10 hours after she zipped the suitcase shut.

“He was so frightened,” she told ABC News.

“He hid for about seven hours in our hotel room and only in the middle of the night came out and started licking us and purring.”

The group was set to return to Ohio on Sunday.

Now if you’re getting ready for your next trip, check and make sure that you don’t have an extra passenger sleeping in your suitcase. One about six years ago, before we moved to Delaware permanently, I was packing to come down to Delaware for the weekend and I happened to notice the towels moving on the top of my suitcase, when I moved them, I saw my cat Millie snugged at the bottom. In this case, Millie didn’t want to come along to Delaware, she found a new hiding place in an attempt to avoid the long car ride! If packing for a trip, don’t leave open suitcases on the bed. You never know, you may have an unexpected traveler on your trip!

Keeping Your Cat Safe in Your Absence

Saturday, March 12, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

There are times when we have to leave our pets with a sitter or family member. Cats are creatures of routine and it’s always best to keep them at home while you’re gone, with a sitter of course. Cats feeling the absence of their owners will need extra attention and  reassurance. It’s best to have someone that your cat is familiar with stay with her while you’re gone.  While you’re gone, try not to make any more changes to her routine. Make sure that the sitter, feeds her at the same time and in the same place each day. Make sure her litter is kept clean. It’s a good idea to leave some of your clothing around for her to lie on. She will feel more secure being near something with your scent on it. When you arrive back home, you will be re-assured that your cat was not stressed and kept calm and content the whole time that you were gone. Of course, she did miss you although your she might not be at the door waiting!

Latvian woman drives into Ukraine to rescue pets

LVIV, Ukraine, March 7 (Reuters) – At an animal shelter in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, Natalia Horobets bid an emotional farewell to her beloved pet cat Charly on Monday.

Horobets and her husband had fled their home in the eastern city of Kramatorsk as Ukrainian troops fought Russian invaders.

But after a difficult journey west on a packed train they finally decided to let their pet go, concluding that setting up a new life hundreds of miles from home would be hard enough without a hyperactive cat to care for.

“Our trip by train lasted for 40 hours,” Natalia Horobets said in Lviv, which along with the rest of Ukraine’s west has so far been largely untouched by the conflict. “There were many people and we were afraid that he would be trampled.”

Rasma Krecia, a Latvian volunteer, is the rescuer hoping to take Charly and dozens of other pets across the border into Poland until the war is over.

“We’re going to try to take as many animals as we can out, back to Latvia, back to Europe, back to safety,” Krecia said at the Home for Rescued Animals in Lviv, where she was loading up three vans with the first batch of dogs and cats.

She couldn’t have remained in Latvia and done nothing, she told Reuters. “If I have an opportunity, if I have a large van, if I can bring food here and take some animals back to safety, I can’t stay at home.”

The Lviv sanctuary previously dealt with wild animals and strays, but since Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24 it has taken in more animals from people fleeing the violence.

Now dogs, cats and even a pet rat jostle for attention alongside foxes and storks.

While Reuters was at the centre, a Lviv resident brought in half a dozen puppies that her friend had found in a box at the train station three days before, where thousands of internally displaced people pass through on a daily basis.

As Krecia prepared to fit cages to her vans, the Horobets family said their final farewells to their cat.

“Charly, my little one, you will come back home, but you need to stay in a different place for now, you will be good there,” said Natalia Horobets.

Her husband Volodymir said they did not know what their future held: “We hope that Ukraine will endure and win and we will come back home.”

Remember, pets are family! Thanks to Reuters for bringing this heartwarming situation to light !

Do Fox Consider Cats Prey?

Thursday, March 10, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

A few evenings ago, I was out on my deck and looked across the street and saw a fox They are common in our neighborhood.. I know that our  cat Millie is safe and secure inside the house but there are many outdoor cats that roam the neighborhood in the evenings. I immediately became a little concerned being that the fox was right near where there are a few feral cats. Are cats prey to fox? The answer is usually no. They are known to take on small mouse-like rodents such as voles and ground squirrels.  However, when prey is not sufficient, fox may hunt domestic cats. Generally, cats do not form an essential fox’s diet. As I always say, it’s always safer to keep your cats indoors especially at night.

Unless you own a cat, you probably can’t believe that a cat shows love.

Here’s the Merriam Webster Dictionary’s definition of love.
1. Strong affection
2. Warm attachment
3. Unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for others

Cats do show affection and not just when a meal is served. Cats seek their owners out for affection in the form of play or maybe a chat or even a stroke or two.

When people say that cats don’t show affection and  are unattached and that they won’t come when called, they are comparing cats to dogs.

Cats form strong attachment to their owners. There are many known cases where the owner had to leave, or died, and the cat showed signs of distress. The cats sit at the owners bedroom door meowing. They go into hiding and even refuse to eat. Some perfectly healthy cats have had such a strong attachment that they simply died after the loss of their owner, the only cause seeming to be a broken heart.

So yes, cats do feel and show affection, just in a different way than dogs.
