Queen of the House

posted by Jim Murphy

My cat Millie always kept to herself. She slept in our back bedroom and would come out for brief periods for food and water. Since we lost our cats Molly and Atlantis, Millie is now out and about. She loves to sit with us every evening. She snuggles up to me and loves getting pet. She now spends most of her time in our family room rather than hiding in our back room.

When we adopted Millie seventeen years ago, our cat Molly was already with us for six years. They really never got along and Molly was obviously the dominant cat. She would not let Millie in the bathroom to get to her litter box, she would chase her and swat her and poor Millie would retreat to a quiet, safe place in the house.

After Molly passed, we adopted Atlantis, a beautiful cat who never did anything to intimidate Millie but the damage was already done. Millie was intimidated by Atlantis and kept to herself. Now that Atlantis is also gone, Millie is our only cat. She has really become more social. Now it’s her time and I’m glad that we canĀ  spend some quality time with our little Millie. We cannot adopt another pet as it will send Millie back into hiding and we have no intentions of doing that!

A cats behavior can change if the circumstances change but it’s a slow gradual change.

Remember, pets are family!
