Adopting a Dog, Consider a Rescue Dog

Thursday, February 17, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

If you’re thinking of adopting a dog, consider a rescue dog. There are many dog rescue organizations across the country. Some focus on rescuing certain breeds such as Greyhounds that are usually put down after their racing career is over.  Rescue organizations also focus on other breeds that have been abandoned. You would be doing a good thing by considering a rescue dog.  The first thing that you need to do is go to a rescue website. If you are looking for a specific breed, there will be a link for rescued dogs. Petfinder is also a good choice for all breeds.  Select the breed, size, age and enter your zip code. A list of dogs will come up in your surrounding area.  You can also check out Petfinder if you are not looking for a specific breed.  Pick out a dog and learn more about. You will be asked to fill out an application with details about you, your home, your family and your knowledge of dogs. You must also give the name of a veterinarian who could vouch for you. You will then be contacted and asked more questions. The rescue organization just wants to make sure that the dog is going to a good home and is not left alone the majority of the time.

Be prepared for the foster parents to bring the dog to your home for a first visit. If the dog is at a kennel, you will be asked to go to the kennel. They will see how the dog interacts with you and how you interact with the dog.

If all goes well, your cost will be about $150 to cover shots, spaying/neutering and any other veterinarian costs. Some of the money will be allocated to rescue another dog.  Most rescue organizations are non profit and the foster parents are all volunteers.

Reasons Why Your Two Dogs Suddenly Start Fighting

Tuesday, February 15, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

If your dogs suddenly start fighting with one another, the reasons can vary.  Have any of your dogs not been neutered? Has one become sexually mature?  Is there plenty of space for both of them to share?   Have you let them get away with bad behavior in the past? Do they get little exercise or have too few dog toys?  Any or all of these things can cause fighting.

To correct the problem, exert your authority and feed the more aggressive dog last.  Make him walk behind you and your other dog. If he does show aggression, give him an immediate correction such as a loud noise. This tells him that fighting will not be tolerated. Always reward him for peaceful behavior. This will motivate him to repeat the good behavior. If the problem continues, consult your veterinarian.

Adopting a Pet is Like Adopting a Child

Monday, February 14, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

I read a very disturbing article. Did you know that  about 5 to 7 million companion animals enter shelters every year and 3 to 4 million are euthanized!  (60% are dogs and 70% are cats) These statistics are staggering! More than 20 percent of people who leave dogs in shelters adopted them from a shelter.  Lets face the fact that many people should NEVER own a pet whether it be a dog or a cat, it doesn’t matter. I hate to say it but we are a very selfish, self centered society.  Many of us don’t have time to spend with a pet. Work and a social life rules. Also many neglect to realize that owning a pet requires patience, and flexibility. Yes, there is a possibility that a piece of furniture may be ruined but does this justify taking the pet back to the shelter  only to be euthanized 72 hours later. Come on, show some compassion. Would you put your child up for adoption if he accidently spills something and ruins your rug??  Prospective pet owners must be prepared to face some challenges ahead before adopting a pet. If they can’t or don’t expect anything to change, then don’t even consider adopting. So many people adopt dogs of cats because their child wants a pet. Many of these people have no clue of how to care for the pet but because their child is insisting, crying, whining or whatever, they give in and who suffers? The poor pet. Come on people, use common sense, be considerate of our furry friends. They truly deserve a good life and if you can’t give them one, then let someone else give them a good life, love and affection. Sorry if I offend anyone but this is a fact, there are too many inconsiderate, selfish people out there!!

Ways To Curb Separation Anxiety in Dogs

Saturday, February 12, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

This is a story about a young man who owned a dog. The man was in the military and left for his tour in Afghanistan. During his time over there, the dog was taken care of by the man’s girlfriend. When than man’s tour was completed, he returned home to his loving pet who did not leave his side. The problem now is that the dog gets very stressed every time the man leaves the house, even if it’s just for a short period of time. He messes things up, jumps, barks etc. It’s very clear that this dog is suffering from separation anxiety. Every time his owner leaves the house, the dog feels that he will not return.

There are some things that could be done to help ease separation anxiety.  Counterconditioning may be a first step. Counterconditioning  is a treatment process that changes an animal’s fearful, anxious or aggressive reaction to a pleasant, relaxed one instead. It’s done by associating the sight or presence of a feared situation with something really good, something the dog loves. Over time, the dog learns that what he was fearing is actually very good for him.  These good things could be delicious food. The dog will associate being alone with having a delicious treat. Every time you leave the house, try giving the dog a “Kong,”

The following information was obtained from the ASPCA website.

What’s a KONG?

The KONG is a nontoxic, dishwasher-safe rubber toy with a hollow center. When stuffed with food, it provides dogs with a healthy outlet for their natural desire to chew and lick. KONGs come in many sizes, from very tiny to extra-large. Some are made for puppies with baby teeth, some are made for regular chewers and some are made for dogs with powerful jaws. There’s a KONG out there for every dog!

This is stuffed with something really tasty, like low-fat cream cheese, Cheez Whiz® or low-fat peanut butter, frozen banana and cottage cheese, or canned dog food and kibble. A KONG can even be frozen so that getting all the food out takes even more of your dog’s time.

Try giving your dog a Kong when you leave the house for over a half hour or so, see what happens. Most likely, your dog may want you to go out more often!

Moderate or severe cases of separation anxiety must be dealt with differently. These cases require more complex desensitization. It crucial that your dog gradually becomes accustomed to being separated from you by starting with  many short separation experiences that do not produce anxiety. Then gradually increase the duration of separation time over many weeks of daily sessions.

We will write more on this subject in the coming weeks as the various situations can be complicated.

How To Clean Your Dogs Eyes

Thursday, February 10, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

You may realize that your dog’s eyes need a good cleaning, especially if you have a dog with long fur. First, check to make sure that there is only dirt around the eyes. If you notice redness, pus or swelling, call your veterinarian.  If all you see is a little bit of grime, carefully trim the hair around your dog’s eyes cutting parallel to the eyelid. This will keep hair from scratching your pets eyes, then use a soft, wet washcloth or special eye wipes to gently clean the eye area.  If the fur around your dog’s eyes is stained, don’t worry,  this is a natural situation. If you’re bothered by the sight of it, you can look for special cleaners that are designed to remove eye stain.

Cats can very easily interpret voice tones rather than words. I usually speak to my cat Millie in a cheery voice and she usually responds well.  Cats constantly size up our gestures and syllables to see if we are praising them or are angry at them. Even without words, they pick up our emotions and our intentions. When I act upset, Millie usually keeps her distance for a little while. She can sense by the vibrations that I’m giving off that something is wrong. Here’s a challenge for you. Without making any gestures, make eye contact with your cat and say in a stern voice, “What a good kitty you are.” “Let me give you a treat.” Then with a smile on your face and a cheery voice say “I hate when you scratch the furniture.” I can bet that your cat will approach you when he hears the happy tone. Even though you’re saying something negative. This will prove that’s it’s not what you say but how you say it!

Protecting Your Pup During Play

Tuesday, February 8, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

Pups love to run and play, but it’s important that your pup doesn’t injure himself while having fun.  When you play fetch with your dog, try to prevent his body from twisting in the air or landing hard on the ground. You can try rolling a ball instead of throwing a toy in the air. This has less impact on his joints.  When you’re taking your dog for long walks or runs, consider his fitness level. Build up his endurance over time. Take it slow at first and wall or run short distances gradually increasing the speed and distance as your dog gets used to this activity.  Consider where you take your dog. Avoid gravel or asphalt. Always take along plenty of water and look for signs of fatigue.

Feral and Stray Cats , Is There a Difference?

Monday, February 7, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

We have several cats that we leave food for each day on our porch. Two cats will run if they just see a human, they will only come to our porch and eat their food if there is absolutely no one around.  We have one cat who will actually wait by our door for her food each morning. Today I found her sitting on the couch out on our porch this morning. I came out with the food, she got up, greeted me and meowed. I put her food down and gave her a pet and came back inside.

Feral cats have never had contact with humans therefore they will not meow when they see them, or have any contact whatsoever. A stray cat may have a home somewhere else and basically lives outdoors or they may have been abandoned after their owners died or moved. These cats welcome human contact, the will meow and even run up against a human if they come in contact.

We have determined of the three cats we feed, two are feral and one is a stray.

Look For Digestive Issues in Your Dog

Sunday, February 6, 2022
posted by Jim Murphy

There are some common signs of digestive problems in dogs. They are usually gas, bloating and diarrhea.  If your dog has more than three bowel movements in a day, you may want to withhold food for twenty four hours.  There are simple causes to lots of digestive problems. Food changes can cause some digestive problems. If you switch to a new food, do it gradually for a week or so to get your dog used to the new ingredients.  Some dogs have food sensitivities. Some dogs have trouble digesting foods like corn, wheat products or soy. If this is the case, switch to a rice based diet. Parasites will cause digestive problems. There are several types of internal worms that can cause diarrhea and gas in dogs. Follow the proper deworming guidelines.  If you give your dog table scraps, digestive problems can occur. Do not give your dog spicy, salty or heavily processed table scraps. If the problem persists, see your vet who may prescribe pet medication that can help.
